‘Beyond our boundaries': Provo mayor focuses on lifting others in State of the City address
Mayor Michelle Kaufusi spoke on the city's recent accomplishments of acquiring American Airlines flights for the Provo Airport, making progress on a new water treatment plant, building a 100-acre sports complex, improving the Rock Canyon Trailhead, a city hall that is all-electric and net zero on emissions and BYU becoming a part of the Big 12 conference.
Kaufusi emphasized the city's focus on public safety and emergency preparedness and how the city utilizes productive partnerships to obtain external funding for city projects rather than increase property taxes.
"As amazing as all this news is, the condition of a city is about more than milestones," she said Wednesday night at the Covey Center.
The mayor detailed the impact of Amelia Earhart, who broke boundaries and opened doors for women in male-dominated fields. She said the drive and spirit of Earhart lives in Provo, where the focus isn't just to make life comfortable but also to impact others.
"From our oldest and largest institution, BYU … to our Olympic venue, the Peaks Ice Arena, Provo proudly focuses and faces and embraces the world beyond our boundaries," she said.
From WordPerfect, which revolutionized word processing on computers and Qualtrics gaining recognition worldwide, to Nu Skin and Angel Studios, which have brought products to people in dozens of countries, Provo is "an exceptional place" for people who want to bless others, the mayor said.
"We see that the world beyond our boundaries could use some lifting up, and Provo embraces that lift," she said.
Four residents received a Mayor's Award for "embracing the lift" and blessing others.
The first was Analane Powel, who through her business Angel Gowns transforms donated bridal dresses into funeral gowns for children who have died. She has "humbly and quietly" blessed families by donating them to hospitals and lifting those going through tragedy, the mayor said as she gave Powel the award.
Also recognized was Nu Skin founder Blake Roney for the charity work his company has provided around the world; Don Jarvis for his work on sustainability in the city that led to "forward-looking" city policies; and 100-year-old veteran Col. Amos Wright, who fought in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
"My purpose, our purpose, isn't just to enjoy our outstanding quality of life. I am driven — we are driven — to make an impact. Because of that, my vision for Provo is that we will only rise in our ability to touch and lift the world," the mayor said, with emotion in her voice.
Olympic silver medalist Noelle Pikus-Pace spoke at the event, touching on how the Olympics are a symbol of unity for the world, and everyone should strive to carry the torch.
"It's a reminder the flame of unity is alive even in times when the world feels dark," she said. "The things that connect us will always outweigh the things that separate us."
During the event, the mayor talked about the city's plans for an airport expansion. She said the Utah County Commission on Wednesday approved the expansion to build a full terminal with 10 gates, committing $78 million to the project. Now, the city can now review the expansion proposal from the Tourism Tax Advisory Board to move forward.
"It's not a done deal, but how do you not celebrate an unprecedented offer of $78 million in outside funding?" she said.
Utah County's contribution includes $19.5 million in up-front funding from the Tourism, Recreation, Cultural, and Convention Tax revenue and Transient Room Tax revenue. Additionally, the county will contribute $3.9 million annually over the next 15 years to ensure sustained support for the airport's expansion, according to a county statement Wednesday.
"Expanding the airport is a win-win," said Utah County Commission vice chair Skyler Beltran. "Not only will it boost tourism and visitor-generated revenues that can help benefit our citizens and reduce their tax burden for years to come, but it will also provide increased convenience and travel opportunities for Utah County residents.
The mayor also announced a complete redesign of the city website that is "dynamic and user friendly" and "reflects the vibrant spirit of our community." In addition to the new website, the city debuted it's first ever mobile app, that aims to foster greater connection between the residents and government.
'Together, we are creating a Provo that we can all be proud of,' Kaufusi said.

Real American Freestyle wrestling announced a partnership with Takedown apparel on Tuesday and said it is in talks with Gable Steveson, one of Takedown's most prominent endorsers, about a possible rematch with Wyatt Hendrickson. Hendrickson, who stunned Steveson to win the 285-pound national title at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships in March, will headline Real American Freestyle's inaugural event Aug. 30 in Cleveland. 'There's no signed contract, but we've been in conversation,' he said. It signed him a little more than a month later. The partnership with Takedown is RAF's first official apparel collection. It will include looks worn by athletes in and out of competition. Bronstein said the partnership is a step toward building a professional freestyle wrestling ecosystem. The line will deliver a new revenue stream for competitors beyond live events. 'I think we're going to do really well in the merch game,' he said. 'We're going to sell a lot of good apparel and just keep being edgy with it. We'll have street wear and then the sports wear. So you'll have the typical, but we also are developing a street wear line too.' Takedown CEO and founder Dustin Kawa said it's a significant moment for his company. 'Both brands share a deep love for wrestling and a commitment to fighting for the sport, the athletes, and the community that raised us. Now is our time to make history – together,' he said.

Flight Attendants Get Deal At Air Canada And Talk At American Partner
Flight attendants at Air Canada reached a tentative agreement early Tuesday morning, but flight attendants at a key American Airlines regional partner are still battling for some of the same contract improvements. Flight attendants at PSA Airlines, one of three wholly-owned regional carriers for American Airlines, demonstrated Monday in five cities including Charlote, where the airline is based. The Association of Flight Attendants represents the airline's 1,600 flight attendants. The union's demands are very similar to what the Air Canada flight attendants sought: boarding pay, wage gains and some work rule improvements. Boarding pay, for time spent on the aircraft before departure, has become an industry standard over the last few years. It is in the American Airlines contract with the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, the Alaska Airline contract with the AFA and the tentative contract with AFA which United Airlines flight attendants recently rejected. Delta and SkyWest also offer boarding pay to their non-union flight attendants. The rate in all five cases is 50%. The figure was also on the table in the Air Canada talks, although details of the tentative agreement have not been released. However, at PSA, 'Boarding pay is on the table at 25% of our pay rates,' said Sean Griffin, the Charlotte-based 20-year PSA flight attendant who is vice president of the master executive council and a negotiator. Also, he said, 'the company is still only willing to offer low single digit wage increases.' Other groups have received double digit increases. The first three-year wages at PSA, where about 70% of flight attendants have three years or less, are $27.06 hourly or about $24,000 a year. 'It's frustrating for junior flight attendants,' Griffin said. Flight attendants top out at $43.51 hourly after 18 years. Regional flight attendants typically earn less than mainline flight attendants. Griffin was part of the Charlotte demonstration: about three dozen flight attendants participated. Length was limited to about an hour due to 90-degree heat and high humidity. The PSA contract, approved in 2019, became amendable on July 15, 2023, A positive indicator for negotiations is that veteran management negotiator Jerry Glass will be at the table when mediated talks resume Wednesday in Washington, D.C. 'That's a good sign,' Griffin said. 'He wants to get a deal done.' Glass first participated in remote talks in June, he said. PSA spokesman Joe Horvath said Monday, 'Today's demonstration is one of the important ways flight attendants express their desire to get a deal done — and we share the same goal. With the support of the National Mediation Board, we continue to meet regularly with the AFA and have made progress toward reaching an agreement that our flight attendants deserve. 'We look forward to continued discussions this week,' Horvath said. American's three wholly owned regional partners are Envoy, Piedmont and PSA. In general, 'We set the foundation for all of them,' Griffin said. 'We want to make sure it is a sturdy foundation.' In fact, the PSA talks have high importance for all regional airline flight attendant contracts. Last week, the approximately 150 flight attendants at GoJet, who are AFA members, ratified a contract that includes wage increases and a trigger for boarding pay. 'They will get boarding pay like the rest of the industry, with the trigger of another airline getting it,' said AFA President Sara Nelson in an interview on Monday. 'This also helps at the table with PSA, which knows that when PSA does it, they won't be alone.' At the protest, Charlotte base president Dana Sweat noted the death of Charlotte-based PSA Flight attendants Danasia Elder and Ian Epstein in the crash of American Airlines Flight 5342 in January. 'We all kind of woke up that night and it hit us that this can be a dangerous job,' Sweat said. 'Not everybody takes five, six, seven flights a day. 'Every time we get on that plane, we are firefighters, medics, psychotherapists, and law enforcers,' she said. 'We are not compensated for that.'

Orlando Unlocked: Dyer to outline housing plan in State of the City
Orlando currently faces a housing shortage and in another decade, the need for more apartments and houses will be critical as 90,000 new residents are expected to call the City Beautiful home by 2035. Mayor Buddy Dyer is expected to outline a package of incentives, fee waivers and flexible zoning rules on Tuesday at his annual State of the City speech. The 'Orlando Unlocked' policy package aims to encourage the creation of new housing, from small garage apartments to large complexes with hundreds of units. Since 2020, the city has faced a shortage of approximately 9,400 apartments, houses, and other units. And with the population surge expected, about 46,000 more units will be needed to keep up. 'Our Orlando Unlocked initiative helps increase density in ways that strengthen neighborhoods enabling granny flats, townhomes and apartments to be built in more locations across the city,' a draft of the mayor's speech reads. 'Because when we expand supply, we not only lower costs, we give people the power to choose where and how they want to live.' The speech is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Plaza Live. The city is seeking to increase housing stock across all price points, in a region where prices hit a record high last year. The median sale price in Central Florida last December was $380,000, a figure that includes single-family houses, condominiums, duplexes and townhomes. But city officials also aim to offer incentives, fee waivers, reductions in parking requirements and variances to create more affordable places to live. For example, the city offered a 15% parking reduction and a school impact fee waiver totaling about $2 million to 52 at Park, a new apartment complex at West Colonial Drive and John Young Parkway. The neighborhood is under construction and includes 300 units for residents who make at or below 60% of the area's median income of about $69,000. Other policies seek to speed up permitting and review processes to get shovels in the ground quicker. For example, most proposals of 100 units or fewer wouldn't require public hearings. 'The biggest role I think we see the city having is helping on the supply realm,' said David Barilla, the executive director of Orlando's Community Redevelopment Agency. Activists have been pushing city leaders to go further and outright eliminate minimum parking requirements. they contend parking costs developers between $3,000 and $5,000 per space and, in turn, boosts housing costs. City officials are drafting an ordinance, though its passage is far from certain, the Orlando Sentinel reported previously. In recent years, city officials reduced parking requirements downtown and waived them altogether in one stretch between Interstate 4 and Rosalind Avenue. Chief Planner Elisabeth Dang said the Unlock Orlando campaign is designed for a range of plans, from those proposed by the largest developers down to those adding a garage apartment to a neighborhood property. 'We're putting all that together to try to hopefully encourage some people who have been on the sidelines because they just don't know how to get started, to participate and start some new projects we might not see otherwise,' she said. A fact sheet prepared by the city states that about 9,200 units are under construction across the city and about 18,000 are approved or in permit review. The Orlando region — from Sanford to Kissimmee — is one of the nation's toughest markets for affordable housing. A report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition found the area is the sixth worst, and that only 19 affordable units per 100 extremely low-income renters are available. While rent prices have cooled this year from COVID-era surges, prices are still higher than many working-class renters can afford.
