The latest TransUnion debt report shows total debt continued to grow in the first quarter compared with the year before, driven mainly by young people and newcomers.
The credit-tracking agency says gen Z consumers saw their outstanding balances grow 30.6 per cent from the prior year.
The report says total outstanding debt grew 4.7 per cent to $2.5 trillion in the first quarter year-over-year.
Delinquencies, or missed payments, were also up 11 basis points year-over-year to 2.7 per cent — mainly driven by new-to-credit consumers.
The report also shows subprime consumers continued to struggle as their delinquency rates rose at significantly higher rates than prime and above-prime consumers.
Matt Fabian, director of financial services research at TransUnion Canada, says higher balances from high-risk credit consumers signal a critical moment for lenders to reassess risk strategies.

Hudson's Bay heads into last days of sale with lots of shoppers, little merchandise
Store closing advertising at the Hudson's Bay in Toronto, on Friday, May 30, 2025. Canada's oldest company, Hudson's Bay will be permanently closing all its stores in Canada. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Nathan Denette TORONTO — Hudson's Bay is headed into its last weekend of liquidation sales with its Toronto flagship teeming with shoppers looking for one last treasure from the department store. Even before the Yonge Street location opened Friday, scores of shoppers waited in front of the doors, strategizing how to find the best deal. When they made it inside, they found $10 Levi's jeans for men, $5 corsets for women and $15 pajama sets. There were also plenty of furniture and fixtures for sale, including plastic fruit, stacks of woven baskets and row upon row of mannequins. Shopper Alysha Robinson considered herself lucky to have snagged decorative white and gold pumpkins and Easter eggs she will use for displays at her cannabis store, but said it was sad to see store shelves so empty. All 80 Hudson's Bay stores and 13 under its Saks banners are due to close by Sunday. This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 30, 2025. Tara Deschamps, The Canadian Press

Taylor Swift announces that she now owns her entire catalogue of music
Taylor Swift is now the proud owner of her entire catalog of music, roughly six years after she protested the sale of her master recordings by her former record label. Swift announced the news in a letter posted to her website Friday, writing that 'all of the music I've ever made… now belongs… to me.' The Grammy-winner specified that she owns all her music videos, concert films, album art and photography, along with unreleased songs. She purchased her music 'outright with no strings attached, no partnership, full autonomy,' from Shamrock Capital, a private equity company that had acquired her master recordings. 'To say this is my greatest dream come true is actually being pretty reserved about it,' Swift wrote, adding that she was able to 'buy back' her music from Shamrock following the success of the Eras Tour. Swift went on to credit her supporters for making her record-breaking tour so much of a success, writing, 'I can't thank you enough for helping to reunite me with this art that I have dedicated my life to, but have never owned until now.' Swift also thanked Shamrock Capital 'for being the first people' to offer her the opportunity to buy back her music, describing her business dealings with the company 'honest, fair, and respectful.' 'This was a business deal to them but I really felt like they saw it for what it was to me: My memories and my sweat and my handwriting and my decades of dreams,' she wrote. The sale of the master recordings of Swift's first six albums to producer Scooter Braun and Shamrock Capital in 2019 sparked the singer to take back ownership of her music in her own way by pledging to re-record those six albums after negotiations to buy her music back from Braun at the time failed. Swift went on to release what she called 'Taylor's Version' albums for 'Red,' 'Speak Now,' 'Fearless' and '1989.' With each 'Taylor's Version' album, she's included a number of previously unreleased songs coined 'from the vault.' Until now, many so-called Swifties had expected her to at some point release 2018's 'Reputation' album and her 2006 self-titled debut album 'Taylor Swift,' the status of which Swift provided an update for in her announcement Friday. Why Costco Stock Just Popped
Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ: COST) stock jumped 3% through 10:30 a.m. ET Friday after the company beat analyst forecasts for fiscal third quarter 2025 sales and earnings. Heading into last night's report, analysts forecast Costco would earn $4.23 per share on $63.1 billion in quarterly sales. In fact, Costco earned $4.28 per share, and sales were $63.2 billion. Costco Q3 earnings Costco's sales grew 8% to $62 billion. With $1.2 billion in membership fees added in, total revenue was $63.2 billion -- also up 8%. Selling, general, and administrative expenses outran sales growth, rising more than 10%, which isn't great. But surprisingly, despite all the tariffs turmoil of the last few months, merchandise costs rose less than 7.5%, allowing Costco to grow its operating income nicely -- up 14%. On the bottom line, Costco's $4.28 in per-share profit increased 13%. Free cash flow (FCF) grew nicely as well, and is now up 13% to $5.9 billion for the fiscal year to date, eclipsing reported earnings of $5.5 billion over the last nine months. Is Costco stock a buy? Tallying up the latest numbers, financial data provider S&P Global Market Intelligence tells me this is an improvement. Over the past 12 months, Costco's FCF was only $6.9 billion, so less than reported net income of $7.6 billion. Relative to the stock's $459.2 billion market cap, this means Costco stock costs 66.6 times trailing FCF, but only 60.4 times trailing earnings. Is that too expensive to buy, considering the stock is only growing profits and free cash flow in the mid-teens? In my humble opinion, it is too expensive, which is why I don't own Costco stock. It's also why I'm not benefiting from Costco stock going up 3% today. Should you invest $1,000 in Costco Wholesale right now?
