Dubai launches 'skills academies' to help 5 million young people across Africa meet job market demands
Dubai has officially launched an initiative aimed at empowering young people across Africa.
Waleed Al Ali, Secretary General of The Digital School, part of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, announced the 'Skills Academies' during a summit in Dubai.
This initiative aims to benefit five million individuals through a network of eight specialised academies offering accredited training programs tailored to the labour market.
Targeting young individuals aged 18 and above, depending on local regulations, the Skills Academies initiative recognises Africa as the continent with the largest youth population in the world. 'Africa is on the brink of a major renaissance and there is a pressing need for education and training to empower its youth,' he noted.
Al Ali emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, 'Our goal is to significantly contribute to the progress and development of the African continent by providing essential skills that align with job market demands.' He highlighted that the academies will focus on priority sectors, including agriculture, management, and technology, ensuring that participants are equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in today's economy.
By focusing on the unique challenges faced by African nations, the initiative aims to bridge the skills gap and foster economic growth. Al Ali stated, 'The UAE has established itself as a leading investor and supporter of development in Africa, making this collaboration not only beneficial but essential.'

Sharjah Airport welcomes first Ethiopian Airlines flight
As part of a significant expansion of its route network into Africa, Sharjah Airport has officially welcomed the first direct flight operated by Ethiopian Airlines on 2nd June 2025, marking a new chapter in the airport's growing global connectivity. This step reflects Sharjah's rising status on the regional and international aviation map, as more global airlines choose the airport as a strategic operational hub linking the Middle East with the African continent. The inaugural flight was welcomed in a reception attended by senior officials and representatives from both sides. Ethiopian Airlines now operates four weekly flights between Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and Sharjah Airport on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with return flights departing Sharjah on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, bound for Addis Ababa. He noted that this aligns with the growing demand for regional and international travel, fueled by the airport's ambitious expansion strategy and development projects aimed at increasing total passenger capacity to 25 million annually by the end of 2027.
