We have the weapons to beat England, says Italy's Soncin
Soncin and his squad have spoken of their big dreams at this tournament and how overcoming adversity has brought them closer together, and they are confident they can beat Sarina Wiegman's side and secure a first appearance in the final since 1997.
"We have done very well in this event. There is a lot of courage, awareness and serenity. That is what has accompanied us throughout the whole event," Soncin told reporters on Monday.
"We are convinced that we have the weapons to win the game, and we have the utmost respect for the quality of the English players and their international experience."
England survived a heart-stopping penalty shootout that saw only five of 14 spot-kicks scored as they beat Sweden 3-2 in their quarter-final, and Soncin said that it was virtually impossible to replicate the pressure of a shootout in training.
"I don't believe that there is a specific way to train the penalties in a training session because there is the emotional aspect and also the physical aspect that come into play, but especially the emotional aspect which is not the same during a training session," he explained.
"Of course we, like everybody, we try to ... also train penalties so that we're ready for everything, our objective is to reach the final."
Soncin and Italy defender Cecilia Salvai, who also attended the media conference, offered their support to England's Jess Carter, who has withdrawn from social media due to the racial abuse she has received during the tournament.
"It is a cultural campaign (against racism), a cultural battle we have to fight all together. I don't know whether taking the knee is enough to change this, but for sure there is maximum solidarity from our side, we are ready to take part in any campaign to avoid this abuse," Soncin said.
"I hope she can play this game 100 per cent because this is a semi-final, so I hope she can try to detach a bit from this episode. Of course, she's not the first one who's been victim of this abuse and we have the greatest solidarity for her," Salvai added.

Stokes looks to break Old Trafford curse and puts India in to bat
MANCHESTER, England :England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and put India in to bat as the fourth test of a thrilling series against India gets under way in Manchester on Wednesday. The hosts lead 2-1 and can wrap up a series victory with success at Old Trafford over the next five days, but risk-taker Stokes has gambled again - no team who has won the toss and put the opposition to bat has ever won a test match on this ground. "There's pretty decent overhead conditions for bowling so that's what we're going to do," Stokes said. "We've had a good break in between. "It's been a good chance for everyone to go back home and rest, put their feet up then come back here." The fourth test follows a feisty third match at Lord's. India captain Shubman Gill insisted England's conduct went against the "spirit of the game", while Stokes was adamant his team will not go looking for trouble this time around. India make three changes, two of them forced, handing a test debut to seam bowler Anshul Kamboj. Sai Sudharsan replaces Karun Nair at number three after he failed to pass 40 in the first three tests, while Shardul Thakur and Kamboj come in for Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep.

Jersey sales surge for Arsenal, Newcastle United and AC Milan ahead of Singapore friendlies
SINGAPORE: Jersey sales of Arsenal, Newcastle United and AC Milan in Singapore have jumped by more than 20 per cent as football fever hits town. Local fans told CNA that they are excited to welcome the teams, with many hoping to catch a glimpse of their favourite players and even score autographs during their visit. These European clubs are in Singapore this week for two pre-season friendly matches at the National Stadium. SURGE IN SALES Arsenal will take on Italian giant AC Milan on Wednesday (Jul 23), before taking Premier League rivals Newcastle on Sunday. Sports store Weston Corp has been accelerating preparations this week, including for an AC Milan event in Singapore on Tuesday, geared up to welcome both players and fans. It said that pre-season tours such as these often bring a surge in foot traffic and sales. 'Every time there's a pre-season (tour here), we do see an uptick in business,' said Mr Ami Chopra, sales director of football at Weston Corp. 'When those jerseys launch, you do see a slight, significant increase. Come closer to the date, people (feel like because their) team's playing, they need to wear something,' he added. 'So usually (because of) impulse buys, (we) will have quite a big spike in sales.' The store will also run pop-up booths offering exclusive gear on match days, with extra staff on hand to meet the expected rise in demand. BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER For Newcastle fan Terence Ong, buying jerseys is a ritual. He has amassed 85 Magpies shirts in his collection since the 1990s, including the Carabao Cup winners' print this year to celebrate the club's first domestic trophy in more than 70 years. The local fan club NUFC-SG has also produced a special tee to mark Newcastle's visit. 'I think the club is realising now that there is an untapped market in Asia,' said Mr Ong, who is a committee member of the fan club. 'I like to think that it shows a trend that they want to engage the Asian fans a lot more,' he added. 'And for us, getting our fellow official supporters clubs down from the other parts of Asia itself represents more than just strengthening our bonds, it also gives all of us a chance to show Newcastle United the power or the strength of the Asian fan base here.' For him and Singapore's 2,000-strong Toon army, football is also about bringing people together. Plans for food drives and football clinics are in the pipeline to use sports to give back to the community. For Arsenal fan Shaiful Rahman, he is looking to connect with fellow supporters from other Asian countries for the game. 'The main excitement for us is when we organise a fan party for all the regional friends who are coming to Singapore,' said the president of the Official Arsenal Singapore Supporters Club. 'It's kind of like a form of appreciation for them taking the trouble to fly here and getting to know each individual supporters club.' He noted that there is also a deeper purpose behind it all, adding: 'It's the networking, getting to know each other, being Singaporean, supporting one another. I think that is the key to it.'

Sinner re-appoints former fitness coach Ferrara
LONDON :Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner has re-appointed his former fitness coach Umberto Ferrara with immediate effect, the Italian world number one confirmed on Wednesday. Sinner parted ways with Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi last year following the investigation into his positive tests for banned substance clostebol in March. "The decision has been made in alignment with Jannik's management team as part of ongoing preparations for upcoming tournaments, including the Cincinnati Open and U.S. Open," a statement from Sinner's team said. "Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level." Sinner received a three-month ban agreed with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in February. WADA had appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against an independent tribunal's decision last August to clear Sinner of wrongdoing. Sinner, who returned to action in May and lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final before beating him to win Wimbledon, said clostebol, which can build muscle mass, entered his system after Naldi applied an over-the-counter spray to a cut on his own hand before carrying out treatments on Sinner. The spray had been given to Naldi by trainer Ferrara. Sinner was cleared of fault or negligence by an independent tribunal, which accepted that he had inadvertently been contaminated with the substance. Speaking at last year's U.S. Open, Sinner explained his decision to part ways with Ferrara and Naldi. "Now, because of these mistakes, I'm not feeling that confident to continue with them. I was struggling a lot in the last months. I was waiting for the result. The only thing I need right now is some clean air," he said.
