Milan Inching Closer to Beating Inter to Star Midfielder Signature
Torino midfield stalwart Samuele Ricci has reportedly agreed upon personal terms with Serie A giants Milan. According to Calciomercato, the 23-year-old has reached a 'verbal agreement' with the Rossoneri to switch to the San Siro in the summer transfer window.
Despite committing to a new contract less than a month ago, Ricci's departure from Torino is a virtual certainty. Indeed, the Italian star has a host of admirers in Europe. In addition to Milan, Inter and Manchester City are also in the mix.
However, Sergio Conceicao's men have taken concrete steps to win the race for Ricci's services. Milan have earmarked the Torino talisman as a perfect long-term replacement for Sandro Tonali, who left the club to join Newcastle United in the summer of 2023.
Ricci's playing style bears much resemblance to Tonali. Both players are excellent passers and boast noticeable leadership skills. Therefore, the ex-Empoli man ticks all the boxes for the type of player Milan are eager to recruit in the summer transfer window.
But Ricci won't come cheap. Milan would likely have to allocate up to €30 million to convince Torino to sell their standout performer. Yet, the Rossoneri will probably try to drive the price down by offering several counterparts in a potential player-plus-cash deal.
Meanwhile, Ricci is keen to join Milan. He has reportedly chosen Conceicao's charges over other proposed destinations, perhaps mostly thanks to the significance of the role he would have in the Rossoneri project.

Spirit sign F Sofia Cantore, first Italian in NWSL history
The Washington Spirit signed forward Sofia Cantore on Tuesday, making her the first Italian player in NWSL history. Cantore arrives via transfer from Italy's Juventus FC and is signed to a three-year deal with a 2028 team option. Cantore, 25, is eligible to join the Spirit on July 1 when the FIFA summer transfer window opens. She will occupy an international roster slot. "Sofia is an important signing for this Spirit team as we continue to build up our roster to compete for trophies," head coach Adrian Gonzalez said. "Her extensive experience in the Italian leagues and exceptional talent in the attacking third will help add a new layer for the Spirit moving forward." Cantore made her professional debut with Italy's Fiammamonza in 2015 before moving to Juventus in 2017. She has spent time on loans with Hellas Verona (2019-20), Florentia (2020-21) and Sassuolo (2021-22), racking up 40 goals and 120 assists across 120 appearances. "I'm very proud to join this important club and grateful for their trust in my abilities," Cantore said. "I'm excited to start this new chapter of my career as the first Italian player in the NWSL and can't wait to work every day with coach Adrian Gonzalez and my new teammates. And of course, I'm thrilled to challenge myself in this great league!" Internationally, Cantore has contributed five goals in 37 matches with the Italian national team since making her senior debut in 2020. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Trump welcomes Juventus soccer team, asks about transgender athletes
1 of 5 | President Donald Trump meets with members of the Juventus soccer club in the Oval Office of the White House on Wednesday. He turned around and asked them: "Could a woman make your team, fellas." Photo by Ken Cedeno/UPI | License Photo June 18 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump on Wednesday welcomed members of the Italian Juventus Club World Cup team to the Oval Office as he spoke about a range of topics, including transgender athletes. The team, which includes Americans Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie, appeared in the White House before playing Al Ain of the United Arab Emrites at Washington, D.C.'s, Audi Field on Wednesday night. Thirty-two teams are competing from last Saturday to July 13 in the United States. Also on hand were FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Juventus club executives, former player Giorgio Chiellini and head coach Igor Tudor. They stood behind the president. Trump turned around and asked them: "Could a woman make your team, fellas." They smiled nervously and didn't respond. Juventus' general manager Damien Comolli finally said: "We have a very good women's team." They are the reigning Serie A champions. "But they should be playing with women," Trump said as Comolli looked at the floor and chose not to answer. "But they should be playing with women," Trump replied. "He's being very diplomatic." Transgender athletes have been allowed to compete in the Olympics, including soccer, since 2004 if they meet the eligibility criteria set by their sport's International Federation. It wasn't until 2021 that the first openly transgender athletes competed in the Games. Trump's executive order that bans transgender participants from women's sports directs the Secretary of State's office to pressure the International Olympic to amend standards governing Olympic sporting events "to promote fairness, safety and the best interests of female athletes by ensuring that eligibility for participation in women's sporting events is determined according to sex and not gender identity or testosterone reduction." During the signing ceremony in February, Trump said he wants the International Olympic Committee to "change everything having to do with the Olympics and having to do with this absolutely ridiculous subject" ahead of the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. Of the more than 500,000 NCAA athletes, only about 40 are known to be transgender, according to Anna Baeth, director of research at research at Athlete Ally, an organization that advocates for LGBTQ equality in sports. The NCAA later adhered to Trump's executive order. Trans people appear to have no advantage in sports, according to an October 2023 review of 2017 research published in the journal Sports Medicine. Earlier Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a Tennessee state law banning gender-affirming care for minors can stand.
