Geely profits surge on record sales as reshuffle underway
Net income more than tripled to 5.67 billion yuan (S$1 billion) in the three months ended Mar 31, from 1.56 billion yuan a year earlier, the company said on Thursday (May 15). That was broadly in line with guidance the company provided last month following a change in its accounting policy. Revenue rose 25 per cent to 72.5 billion yuan.
'The group achieved record-high sales and experienced strong growth in its new energy business,' it said. 'This led to significant scale effects and a substantial increase in overall profitability.'
Geely Auto earlier this month announced a bid to take the premium electric car brand Zeekr private. The move, which came almost exactly a year after Zeekr started trading in New York, values Zeekr at about US$6.4 billion and is part of Li's drive to streamline his business empire – which also includes a stake in Volvo Car, iconic UK sportscar brand Lotus, and the maker of London's ubiquitous black taxis.
Separately, Zeekr on Thursday reported a first-quarter net loss of 718 million yuan, narrowing 63 per cent from last year. Total revenue was largely flat, increasing just 1.1 per cent to 22 billion yuan.
Zeekr merged with the Lynk & Co connected car brand earlier this year, and the period was the first quarter with the full integration of the two marques, Zeekr Group chief executive officer Andy An said.

'The two brands' initial technological consolidation has already boosted profitability through optimised R&D and shared platforms,' An said.
Geely recorded net current liabilities of 11.3 billion yuan, but said that after a comprehensive assessment, this has no significant impact on its ability to continue, because the business continues to generate stable cash flows, has good relationships with financial institutions and is carrying out plans to improve liquidity, it said.
Geely continues to enjoy strong growth in China, with deliveries rising 48 per cent in the first three months of this year. Popular models such as the electric Xingyuan hatchback and Xingyue L sport utility vehicle are among the best-selling vehicles in the world's largest auto market.
But like other Chinese automakers, Geely is facing stiff trade headwinds. The European Union's tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and the increase in taxes on car imports and weak consumer sentiment in Russia – where Geely is a top seller, are impacting exports.
Overseas deliveries grew just small 2 per cent in the first quarter, compared with a 66 per cent surge in a year earlier, according to a separate company filing in April. BLOOMBERG

BAGSVAERD - Novo Nordisk said on Aug 18 it was offering its diabetes drug Ozempic for US$499 (S$640.83) per month to eligible cash-paying patients with type 2 diabetes in the US via its own pharmacy, a tie-up with telehealth service GoodRx and other platforms. US-listed shares of the Danish drugmaker were up 5.3 per cent, while shares of GoodRx rose 34.2 per cent. Novo and rival Eli Lilly have expanded into direct-to-consumer sales for the highly effective and sought-after medicines, in part due to competition from online telehealth companies and pharmacies that sell cheaper compounded versions. Novo already sells Wegovy, the weight-loss version of Ozempic, through its NovoCare pharmacy for US$499. The latest offer is aimed at patients who do not have insurance coverage. Its shares were also trading higher after Wegovy secured US FDA approval for the liver disease metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, or MASH, on Aug 15. GoodRx will sell Wegovy and Ozempic at US$499 monthly to eligible self-paying patients. A spokesperson for Novo said it expected Ozempic cash sales to account for about 10 per cent of total prescriptions - the same level of market penetration the company has experienced with Wegovy. List prices for each drug in the United States are about US$1,000 per month or more, but insured patients pay far less. Eli Lilly offers single-dose vials of its weight-loss drug Zepbound on its website, LillyDirect, for US$499 per month or less, regardless of insurance status. Lilly does not sell its diabetes drug Mounjaro on LillyDirect. Novo said the new offer for Ozempic was part of ongoing efforts to explore new collaborations and approaches towards improving access to authentic semaglutide medicines. Hong Kong arrests 2 over suspected S$8.6m water scam

HONG KONG - Hong Kong police said on Aug 18 they have arrested two people over a suspected scam involving a water supplier that may have cheated the government in a contract worth nearly US$7 million (S$8.99 million). A company named Xin Ding Xin won a deal in June to provide 1.88 million bottles of water which would go into dispensers in some government offices – the first time such a contract went to a Chinese brand, according to local media. But police said the firm was found to have relied on false documents during the tender process, claiming to source its water from another mainland Chinese supplier when in fact they had no business ties. Officers arrested a 61-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman for fraud on Aug 17, seizing around 2,600 bottles of water in a warehouse along with documents and electronic devices. The arrests have prompted water-cooler discussions across the Chinese finance hub on how bureaucrats missed the telltale signs of a scam when awarding a 36-month contract worth HK$52.9 million (S$8.6 million). Payment for the delivered batches has not yet been settled, according to police. The Government Logistics Department said on Aug 18 that it terminated its bottled water supply contract with Xin Ding Xin, as well as 'three other contracts for supply of chemicals which were affiliated with XDX's owner'. Christopher Hui, Hong Kong's secretary for financial services and the treasury, set up a dedicated task force following an urgent meeting on Aug 17. Hui also ordered 'remedial actions' and invited the Audit Commission to review the tender exercise. 'The incident has brought up concerns among government colleagues and drawn extensive attention from the public,' he said in a press release. China EV sector invests more abroad than at home for first time
[HONG KONG] Chinese companies involved in the electric vehicle industry invested more overseas than domestically for the first time in 2024, although foreign projects face higher costs, delays and risks. Firms along the supply chain invested around US$16 billion overseas last year – mostly in battery production, and just ahead of the US$15 billion spent at home, according to a report by research company Rhodium Group released on Monday (Aug 18). The figures represent an 'historic shift' after years of directing around 80 per cent of investment domestically, Rhodium said in the report. Chinese companies are being driven to expand globally as overcapacity and a long-running price war at home squeeze margins all along the supply chain. They are also seeking to skirt punishing tariffs in Europe and the US by building production facilities there, and bowing to pressure from foreign customers for more localised production. 'The fact that overseas investments now outpace domestic ones reflects a saturated Chinese market and the strategic appeal of expanding abroad for higher returns,' said Armand Meyer, senior research analyst at Rhodium and an author of the report. About three-quarters of the outbound investment came from battery makers, reflecting the capital intensive nature of the industry. Major battery makers like Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL), Envision Group and Gotion High-Tech have followed existing clients like Tesla and BMW abroad, driven by high transport costs and requests for localised supply, according to the report. CATL, as the world's biggest EV battery maker is known, in June said it is making overseas expansion its 'No 1 priority' as intense competition in China's domestic auto market threatens the industry's health. BYD, China's top-selling automaker, has factories in Brazil and Thailand, and is planning facilities in Turkey and Indonesia. Only 25 per cent of EV manufacturing projects announced abroad have been finished, compared with a 45 per cent completion rate at home, the report said. BYD last month indefinitely shelved plans to build a major plant in Mexico over geopolitical tensions and uncertainty stemming from US President Donald Trump's trade policies. Domestic projects are not only built faster but are also initiated sooner. Battery factories in China typically begin construction within 3-to-12 months, compared to 10-to-24 months abroad, Rhodium said. Svolt Energy Technology, a battery maker based in northern China, cancelled 99 per cent of its announced overseas investments, the report said. The international expansion of Chinese EV companies and suppliers will need to contend with dynamics such as uneven global demand for battery cars, and pushback in markets such as the EU. At the same time, Chinese firms need to manage Beijing's increasing concern over technology transfer, job losses and industrial hollowing out that could lead to tighter controls on outbound investment.
