I Know What You Did sequel is hooked on setting up another sequel

Like many young horror fans, I raced to see I Know What You Did Last Summer when it came out in 1997. But it proved a letdown, especially compared to the massively successful Scream, scripted by the same writer, Kevin Williamson, the previous year.
Where Scream broke the fourth wall with the regularity of a Bugs Bunny cartoon, this hasty follow-up was just another slasher movie, with a single gimmick given away in the title. The victims lined up for the slaughter are being punished for their role in a hit-and-run accident – so while we're not precisely invited to side with the killer, there's a sense in which they had it coming.
The advantage of remaking this kind of film is that it's not too hard to improve on the original. But the new I Know What You Did is disappointing in its own right, even though the director and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has a few more ideas than Williamson (like him, she disregards the nominal source material, a 1973 young adult novel by Lois Duncan that barely qualifies as horror).
Although it's not evident straight away, the movie is not a remake but a 'legacy sequel,' taking place in the same fictional universe as its predecessors (there'a brief shout-out to the 1998 I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, in which the survivors of the first instalment go through it all again in the Bahamas).
In the tourist town of Southport, North Carolina, the roads are still slippery, the police are still useless, and history appears to be repeating. Once again, a group of young people with everything to live for are implicated in a fatal accident and decide to walk away. And once again, rough justice is meted out by a hook-wielding killer whose intentions are announced in scrawled anonymous messages.
But the very fact that this has happened before adds a layer of Scream -like self-awareness. Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), who survived the ordeal the first time round, has become an academic specialising in trauma, though it's her practical experience that comes in handy when the heroine Ava (Chase Sui Wonders) and her friends show up in search of advice.
The movie has a whole knowing retro side: I would bank on Robinson being a fan of Heathers and Wild Things, and there's even a touch of Jaws, via the character of a bigwig real estate developer (Billy Campbell), whose main concern seems to be how the killings will affect his income.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will have 'a lot more animatronics' and 'bigger set pieces', Josh Hutcherson has teased. The 32-year-old actor is set to reprise his role as Mike Schmidt in the upcoming horror sequel - which is based on developer Scott Cawthon's indie horror video game franchise of the same name - and Hutcherson has now said that Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will be scarier than the original 2023 movie. Director Emma Tammi added there would be 'more than three times as many animatronics' in Five Nights at Freddy's 2 when compared to the first flick, and said the upcoming movie would be more action-centred than the original. Speaking on a panel for the film at San Diego Comic-Con, she said: 'There's so much more action in this one ... with the animatronics and that was incredibly exciting. 'I personally have become so invested in [these characters] and it was just an incredible opportunity to continue to get to tell their stories and expand on them.' As well as Hutcherson's Mike Schmidt, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will see the return of his sister Abby (Piper Rubio), police officer Vanessa Shelley (Elizabeth Lail) and the sinister William Afton (Matthew Lillard). The movie will also introduce Scream star Skeet Ulrich, Mckenna Grace and Wayne Knight. Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will pick up after the events of the first movie, which saw Mike Schmidt (Hutcherson) take on a new night guard job at the reopened Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, only to discover that the animatronics have a life of their own at night. As the nights grow more terrifying, he must uncover the restaurant's dark history to survive. Reflecting on the sequel, Hutcherson detailed the developed relationship Mike shares with his sister Abby, and teased that their bond was 'super strong' in the film. The Hunger Games star said: 'Mike and Abby went through a lot in the first movie, and I think Mike is just wanting to get back to somewhat of a normal life, and he's trying to provide stability for Abby. 'He's trying to find his way in the world. He just wants to have a calm, nice, normal life, but that just can't happen in FNAF. 'He's got all this trauma and stuff that he's lived through in the first film in that story, and he's just trying to fake it till you make it without fully working through all that stuff that happened, and then it happens to him again. Poor Mike!' Looking to the future, Lillard teased a third Five Nights at Freddy's movie could happen if the second movie - which hits screens on December 5, 2025 - is a success. He said: 'If it's a hit, they're gonna make a third movie, and if they make a third movie, I get to kill Mike Schmidt … it's going to be cinematic magic!' Blumhouse Productions boss Jason Blum added: 'If enough people go … we'd be very excited to make a Five Nights at Freddy's 3.'

Speaking with about her new partnership with Uber One on their new advert that sees Gellar once again come face-to-face with the film's eerie fisherman himself, she revealed that she does indeed make a surprise return in the new movie that's out now in cinemas. 'So the first thing I can clarify is that I never said I wasn't going to be in it!' she laughed. 'I actually didn't intend to do it.' She explained that the movie's writer and director, Jennifer Robinson, who just so happens to be one of her closest friends – they talk twice a day, every day – insisted that she would find a way to bring back the fan favourite character. But Gellar wasn't convinced at first. 'She told me about three years ago that she wanted to do this and I was like, that's great. I'll help you with Freddy and I'll anything you need with the movie. I just can't be in it. She's like, 'I'm gonna figure out a way.' And I was like, 'There's no way. I'm dead. I'm not going to be a weird twin!'' Picture: Sony Despite her initial refusal to make a cameo, Robinson eventually found a way to bring back Shivers that Gellar felt honoured the character well enough to walk back onto set in the cover of darkness. 'I was getting up at five in the morning, sneaking into this set. I was not allowed to go outside the entire day that I was filming. because I was in the costume. So I literally was inside for an entire day.' The horror flick was shot entirely here in Australia, and Gellar's collaboration with Uber One came about while she and husband Prinze Jr were living in a home in Rose Bay. 'I usually do all the Uber ordering at home. And before we left, I said to him 'You have to get Uber for Australia because you're going to need it to get around and to order food,' so he finally let me put it onto his phone,' she shared. 'Our first favourite [order] was this great coffee shop in Rose Bay. I wish I could remember the name but they had the most wonderful Turkish coffee and little desserts that we ordered at least every other day while we were in Australia.' The 90s icon went on to share how much she 'loves' spending time Down Under, admitting that it's 'the one place' where she could see herself moving with her family at some point in the future. We have to make sure everything is done right. But I will say we are filming very soon,' she teased. In the original show, fan favourite character Anya, who was originally supposed to be in a handful of episodes only to become one of the most beloved characters, dies in the show's finale. It's a brutal second-long scene and for years fans have felt she was owed more. When I quizzed Gellar on whether the vengeance demon, played by Emma Caulfield, could return, she confessed that she's very much 'on the list' to come back. I tell everyone to be patient because if we bring back all of the new characters right away, then the audience doesn't have time to like and get to the know the new characters. 'We have to get Hulu and Disney to give us enough episodes, over the course of a couple of years, so we can bring everybody back. All the budget as well!' she said. Despite being heaped with praise at the time, because Buffy was still seen as a teen-leaning show on a lesser network, Gellar mostly missed out during awards season, only scoring one Golden Globe nomination in the end. Discussing whether she felt respected within the industry at the time, Gellar replied: 'That's an interesting question. I know a lot of people behind the scenes and on the set did feel that they [awards and critics] weren't for me. But I make the show for the fans, not for awards and critics.' 'And so I really felt the love,' insisted the star. 'If there was a nomination for an award from fans, we always won and people loved it and and so for me, that was the joy that I got. 'And I do have a Daytime Emmy,' she chuckled. 'It's very nice!'
