Can't sync your Fitbit? You're not alone, as service suffers major outage

Right now there doesn't seem to be anything users can do, so just sit tight and avoid the temptation to reinstall the app.
It's a beautiful Thursday morning, and you're up with the sun to get a nice long run in ahead of a busy day. Only what's this? Your tracker won't sync with the app? If you're a Fitbit user, this might be exactly the situation you found yourself facing today, as a major outage hits the company's servers.
Over on the Fitbit status dashboard, the company confirms on ongoing outage, starting about three hours earlier today. While that page acknowledges issues with the Fitbit app and the web API, it suggest that device sync is still operational, but reports from users tell a different story.
On Reddit, posts from users like bitter_sweet9798 and The0Walrus specifically mention sync problems — though we imagine it's probably hard for users to draw a line between what counts as a problem with the app, and with the sync backend in particular (via 9to5Google).
Right now, Fitbit says that it's still investigating the outage, and doesn't offer anything in the way of further details or remediation steps. Based upon what we're seeing from users, though, we'd recommend not messing around with your app too much out of frustration, as those trying to uninstall and reinstall the app have been running into trouble just logging in to their accounts.
Your Fitbit should still keep gathering data while this outage is in progress, so we suppose there's technically no reason for you to use this as an excuse to take a day off, but we still get it — updating your stats at the end of a workout can be a big part of the routine for a lot of us, and not being able to sync up just hits a little different. Hopefully Fitbit irons this one out soon, and everything's back to normal for tomorrow.

Nuclear energy stocks have been on a tear in 2025. Shares in the space are far outpacing peers in the broader energy sector. AI and support from the Trump White House are big tailwinds for nuclear. Nuclear energy stocks got a big boost this week after US Transportation Secretary and interim NASA administrator Sean Duffy announced plans to expedite a nuclear reactor on the moon. The comments sent stocks such as Oklo, Nucor and Nano Nuclear Energy jumping, with the gains extending into Wednesday's session. But it's more than seemingly one-off comments that's boosting nuclear stocks this year, and the alternative power source has become the hottest energy trade out there in 2025. Nuclear power has come sharply into focus in recent years, with advocates including Tesla CEO Elon Musk and, more recently, the Trump White House. A quick look at the energy sector reveals that nuclear energy is outpacing its peers. The VanEck Uranium and Nuclear ETF (NLR) is up almost 50% year-to-date, compared to the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLU), which is up 13%, and the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE), which is down about 1% this year. Nuclear energy is riding the AI wave It's hard to examine the growth of nuclear energy stocks in 2025 without talking about the role of nuclear in the AI boom. AI demand has continued to skyrocket as companies have doubled down on capex plans in the space. Dizzying demand for data centers has created an equally enormous need for power. Goldman Sachs predicts that data center power demand will increase 165% by 2030. That's sparked a search for alternative power sources to support the continued growth of data centers and AI. "It was easy and fast to reactivate nuclear reactors to meet the growing demand for clean energy from data centers," said Alexander Lis, chief investment officer at Social Discovery Ventures. "Other energy sources were either less clean, like coal, or longer to build, like wind or solar." Lis added that his firm considers this demand to be sustainable, as "many big tech companies have already announced their plans to use nuclear energy for their data centers." Last September, Constellation Energy said it would reopen Three Mile Island, with Microsoft set to purchase the power power generated by the site. Eric Schiffer, chairman and CEO of The Patriarch Organization and a nuclear energy investor, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the role that it may play in helping the US achieve AI dominance. "China [is] far more equipped right now from an energy platform perspective," he stated. "Nuclear is a critical piece to ensure we're staying at pace. You can't lose this race over an energy constraint." An under-the-radar Trump trade Schiffer and others believe that Trump's focus on AI will benefit nuclear energy stocks in the near term. "The Trump administration's policy priorities to support AI advancement and the unleashing of American innovation has been centered around a deregulation focus and a markets-driven all-of-the-above energy strategy," said Jeff Le, managing principal at consulting firm 100 Mile Strategies. "It includes an audacious goal of quadrupling US nuclear energy capacity to 500 gigawatts by 2050." Le added that Trump's recent executive orders put "nuclear reactor licensing, fuel reprocessing, and domestic production, at the top of its 'Energy Dominance' agenda." The cumulative effect of already soaring demand for power from AI and Trump's turn away from renewables in the search for alternative power sources means nuclear has been a big winner this year. Importantly for investors, Schiffer thinks this bullish period will continue for another 18 months or so. Plymouth becomes first Minnesota city to monitor tree health using AI

The City of Plymouth is the first in Minnesota to help monitor tree health with data using artificial technology. Leaf by leaf, Conor Nolan, who's a navigator for Greehill Smart Tree Inventories, showed WCCO a new kind of data collection he does on a daily basis, driving no more than 23 miles per hour. "So what's happening is the scanners in the back are spinning around," Nolan said while describing the technology. You'll likely see those scanners on this vehicle roaming Plymouth streets for the first few weeks in August. They're collecting information from the roughly 40,000 trees covering Plymouth city parks, roads and other public spots, looking for dying trees with drooping leaves that could soon spell problems. "Hopefully, the idea is to lower the amount of storm damage and tree failures that happen," said Paul Buck, the city's forester. Last November, the city council approved a contract using funds in the parks and forestry budget, specifically the tree preservation funds, which are funds collected from developers when tree impacts occur due to construction. The funding is intended to assist the city in managing the tree canopy. The companies, Davey in partnership with Greehill, have also helped cities like Dallas, Las Vegas and Burbank. They provide ground-based scanning and machine learning AI to process tree data, starting with an initial scan. "It's going to pinpoint down to making me more hyperfocused on, what are the 10%, 20% trees that seem to have an issue," Buck added. This helps the city save on landscaping costs and get ahead of potentially dangerous storms. "Rather than being reactive, be proactive," said Buck. The city says a survey like this would take them by hand nearly three to four months and would come out quite subjective, which is something the new tech can tackle in nearly two to three weeks with data. "The focus will be on what trees need the most work right now," Buck said. Another street scan will occur in two years, providing further tree health data as a comparison, hoping the four-year contract helps maintenance costs fall and branches don't. But as AI agents gain the ability to act independently, form relationships and operate across multiple domains of our lives, their influence becomes exponentially more relevant. We're moving from AI that responds to us, to AI that anticipates, suggests and sometimes acts on our behalf — whether we're consciously aware of it or not. Building AI That Actually Helps Humanity: ProSocial AI This is where prosocial AI comes in, artificial intelligence systems that are designed not just to be helpful, but to actively promote human and planetary well-being. This isn't about humans versus machines, but about humans working with machines in ways that enhance our capabilities. Hybrid Intelligence requires double literacy, proficiency in both traditional human skills and AI collaboration skills. Just as the printing press required literacy to be truly democratizing, the AI age requires us to understand both how to work with AI systems and how to maintain our distinctly human contributions. Double Literacy means understanding how AI systems work, recognizing their limitations and biases, knowing when to trust or question their outputs, and maintaining skills that complement rather than compete with artificial intelligence. Or think about professionals using AI for decision-making. Without deliberate agency amid AI, they might defer too readily to algorithmic recommendations. The stakes are particularly high for social AI agents that can form emotional bonds with users. Research by teams at Google DeepMind shows how these relationships introduce new risks of emotional harm, manipulation and dependency. ProSocial AI can counteract that trend, with design that is tailored to strengthen rather than substitute human relationships and personal growth. Transforming Society Through Systematic AI Investment Individual mindsets matter. But the ongoing transition requires large-scale change. We need educational systems that teach double literacy alongside traditional subjects. We need workplace policies that preserve human agency in AI-augmented environments. We need social platforms designed for human flourishing rather than just engagement. And all of this must be undertaken with a holistic understanding of the interplay between people and planet. Pro-social AI means pro-planetary AI, because only if the latter thrives the former survives. Technical AI safety and human agency aren't separate problems, they're interconnected challenges that must be addressed together.
