Jersey Stun Scotland By 1 Wicket, Will Qualify For T20 World Cup 2026 If...
The Jersey men's cricket team beat Scotland by 1 wickets on Friday (July 11) to take a big step towards securing a qualification in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. In the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2025 match played at Sportpark Westvliet in The Hague on Friday afternoon, Jersey chased down the target of 134 runs in 20 overs for the loss of nine wickets.
The win over Scotland helped Jersey rise to 2nd position in the points table ahead of the final qualifying match of the European leg between Italy and the Netherlands at the same venue later on Friday.
If Italy beat the Netherlands, which have 4 points from three matches, then Italy and Jersey will both qualify for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
If the Netherlands beat Italy, then also Jersey will have a chance to qualify for the T20 World Cup next year, but for that they just have to hope that Italy lose by a very big margin so that they can pip Joe Burns' men in Net Run Rate (NRR).
As of now, Italy's NRR is +1.722, whereas Jersey's is +0.306, and both of them have 5 points each to their credit.
Greenwood shines
Opening batter Nick Greenwood top-scored for Jersey in the 134-run chase on Friday. Greenwood faced 36 balls during his stay at the crease and, with the help of seven fours, scored 49 runs. He added 28 runs for the first wicket with Harrison Carlyon (15) in 2.5 overs and 53 runs for the second wicket with Zak Tribe (14) before getting out on the first ball of the 12th over of the run chase bowled by Chris Greaves.

After Greenwood's wicket, Jersey suffered a middle-order collapse, and they were reduced to 129/8 in 19 overs. But Captain Charles Perchard (1) and wicketkeeper Jake Dunford (4 runs from 3 balls) kept their nerves calm in the final over and sealed the deal.
For Scotland, Mark Watt, Safyaan Sharif, and Greaves picked up two wickets each, but they failed to help them avoid the embarrassment of losing against Jersey.
In their last qualifier match as well, Scotland suffered a shocking defeat by 12 runs against Italy.

Clubs in Europe's top division in rugby league vote to add more teams from 2026
HEADINGLEY, England (AP) — Clubs in the Super League, the top-tier of European rugby league, have voted to increase the number of teams in the competition to 14 from next season. HT Image The future structure of the league was discussed during a meeting at Headingley, north England, on Monday, with a proposal agreed to immediately open up two additional places, provided certain conditions are met. 'The 12 existing Betfred Super League clubs have today voted to extend the competition to 14 teams for the 2026 season, subject to conditions,' a statement from Super League (Europe) Limited read. 'This would be done by combining the Club Grading System introduced to determine Super League membership as part of the sport's long-term strategic partnership with IMG in 2022, with an independent panel to be chaired by Lord Jonathan Caine, who was recently elected as a member of the Rugby Football League Board, and the Strategic Review Sub-Committee. 'The top 12 clubs under grading at the conclusion of the 2025 domestic season will therefore be joined by two clubs recommended by that panel — provided the panel judges there are two applications of sufficient merit against the set criteria. 'Further details of the composition of the panel and the timing of the process will be confirmed in due course.' The Super League currently includes eleven teams from England and one side based in France — Catalans Dragons. The new proposals could see Championship teams such as Toulouse Olympique, Bradford Bulls, York Knights and London Broncos considered for a place in the expanded 14-team top-flight. Salford Red Devils, meanwhile, could see their Super League spot for 2026 reviewed given the club's ongoing financial issues.
