Soccer-Dortmund's Gross and Beier doubtful for Hoffenheim clash, says coach

(Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund will likely be without the injured Pascal Gross and Maximilian Beier when they travel to Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday, coach Niko Kovac said on Thursday.
Dortmund, in seventh place with four games left to play, are desperate for a top-four finish to secure a Champions League spot for next season.
They have won three of their last four league matches and drew against Bayern Munich, as they battle to make up for lost ground earlier in the season.
"Gross has knee ligament problems," Kovac told a press conference in Dortmund. "I still have some hope but honestly I don't think he will make it.
"Maxi is a similar case. He did not train. He can walk but running is painful but I also have not yet given up. But obviously we will not take any risks."
Both players were injured in last week's 3-2 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach but are not expected to be out too long.
Dortmund are on 45 points in seventh place. Eintracht Frankfurt, third with 52, host fourth-placed RB Leipzig (49) on Saturday. Freiburg (48) are fifth and visit Wolfsburg, while Mainz 05, who travel to Bayern Munich, are sixth with 47.
"The finish is approaching. The feeling I get is during this crunch time everyone player wants to be there, to go beyond any pain," Kovac said.
"I am happy that the lads recognise the situation. Everyone can read the standings. Everyone knows what is at stake and everyone has to increase their focus," he added.
"It does not matter thinking what can happen on May 17 (season finale). We have to keep doing our homework and focus only on the next game. We cannot look at the teams in front of us. We just have to keep winning to put pressure on them."

FRENCH authorities detained 79 people in the second such wave of arrests during celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain's football Champions League win, a police chief said Monday. In the southwest town of Dax, a 17-year-old boy died after being stabbed in the chest. A 23-year-old man riding a scooter in central Paris also died after being hit by a vehicle. A policeman was in an induced coma after being injured by a firework. Receiving the triumphant team at the Elysee palace on Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned what he called 'unacceptable' violence during the festivities. Many of the stars of the team, one of the youngest in the competition, are drawn from the huge football talent pool in the Paris suburbs after PSG's Qatari owners turned their back on the policy of signing star players like Neymar and Lionel Messi. A total of 11.5 million people tuned in across France to watch the match.

PSG big winners in new Champions League format
MUNICH: Paris St Germain went from risking an early exit in this season's Champions League to an emphatic final victory, with the French club proving the biggest beneficiaries of the competition's new format. Luis Enrique's side thumped Inter Milan 5-0 on Saturday in Munich to win the tournament for the first time, but given their early form, they were lucky to even be involved in the knockout rounds. The Champions League has long been a far cry from the old European Cup, where only the champions of each country took part in a knockout tournament, but perhaps this season governing body UEFA has found the best of the reinvented editions. The group stage was replaced with a mammoth 36-team league phase where clubs play eight of the other sides once and the top eight qualify directly to the last 16, while the next best 16 go into a knockout playoff round to join them. UEFA announced the changes in 2021 to much scepticism and criticism from players, managers and fans alike, with complaints over the confusing new format and yet more matches for players already unhappy with an overloaded football calendar. While it did mean extra games for clubs, the claim that the changes would offer an even easier route for the major sides to reach the later rounds proved untrue, and the league phase offered excitement right up to the final matchday. Luis Enrique brushed off any suggestion of altering his ways, despite the increase in games. "It's true, the schedule is a bit different but I don't think it is going to change the way I work as a coach," he said before the competition began. "I have principles that I think are best for the team. It is always good to have around 20 players who think they can play, rather than 12 or 13." TEETHING PROBLEMS PSG's record over the opening six games would have made it very unlikely to see them make it out of the old group stage, having collected just seven points as the new format offered up more matches between the bigger clubs early on. The French club had to face Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, losing to all three. PSG did win their opening match with Girona and later beat RB Salzburg but could only draw at home to PSV Eindhoven. At that stage of the season, the coach faced criticism for his team selections and experimental formations, and Luis Enrique also laid down the law with his players, dropping Ousmane Dembele for the Arsenal game for disciplinary reasons. There was method to what some saw as madness, and the coach has managed to turn his group of players into a proper team, with Dembele ending up player of the tournament, and PSG shifting gear at just the right time. PSG were 2-0 down to Manchester City in their penultimate league phase game, with both sides in trouble as they found themselves way down the standings. PSG mounted a stunning comeback to win 4-2 and their Champions League campaign truly began.

With a deft assist and two clinical finishes at Munich's Allianz Arena, the attacking midfielder, who celebrates his 20th birthday on Tuesday, transformed from squad option to overnight sensation in PSG's 5-0 demolition of the Italian side. 'He is reaping the rewards of his hard work,' coach Luis Enrique had presciently said weeks before the final. 'He will continue to grow. He's in the right club for his development.' Luis Enrique's decision to select Doue over regular starter Bradley Barcola proved inspired. The teenager repaid his manager's faith within 12 minutes, intelligently squaring the ball for Achraf Hakimi's opener when most players would have shot. Desire's clinical finishing soon followed as he netted twice to seal victory before departing to thunderous applause from the PSG supporters after 67 minutes of sustained brilliance. Doue's ascension has been swift yet measured. After catching French eyes during Les Bleus' Olympic silver medal run last summer, he made the switch from Rennes to PSG, where he initially waited patiently for opportunities.
