MEPMA bags nine SKOCH Platinum awards
Established in 2007 and operating under the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department (MA&UD), MEPMA addresses urban poverty through a multi-dimensional approach that integrates livelihood generation, financial inclusion, skill development, housing and women empowerment, according to a release from the department.
Out of 14 innovative projects submitted by MEPMA, nine were chosen for the recognition. The nine initiatives pertain to the welfare of self-help groups (SHGs), urban homeless, street vendors and unrecognised occupational groups.
'This is a moment of pride not just for the department, but for every individual who has been empowered through these interventions. Our aim has always been to create lasting, inclusive change,' said S. Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, MA&UD Department, in the press statement.
He added that the MEPMA field staff have been instrumental in implementing the policy. 'From training SHG members in digital tools to facilitating access to markets, their efforts have touched thousands of lives,' Mr. Suresh Kumar said.
MEPMA mission director N. Tej Bharat said these awards are a recognition of the tireless efforts of their teams and commitment of the SHGs.
The SKOCH Awards are a prestigious independent civilian award presented by the SKOCH Group. The SKOCH Platinum awards will be formally presented at the SKOCH Summit in New Delhi on September 20.

TIRUPATI: The Swarna Naravaripalli Project has promoted sustainable energy in Naravaripalli, A Rangampet and Ramireddipalli villages of Chandragiri Assembly constituency in Tirupati district. Harnessing the region's abundant sunlight, the pilot project has transformed houses in the three remote villages into net zero energy units, setting a groundbreaking model for sustainable rural development in India. Naravaripalli has been selected for the prestigious SKOCH Award for effective implementation of the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu set a target on January 16, which was successfully met by April 18. Tirupati District Collector S Venkateswar received a letter from the SKOCH Group informing that the award will be presented at SKOCH Summit in Delhi on September 20. In partnership with the Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL), solar-generated electricity is integrated into the grid, allowing households to offset their bills, and project costs while feeding surplus energy back to the system. This innovative approach ensures financial relief for households, and promotes clean energy adoption.

After Punjab, Haryana policy to acquire farmers' land under HC scanner
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday issued a notice to the Haryana govt on a plea challenging the legality and validity of its newly notified 'Policy for Purchase of Land Voluntarily Offered for Development Projects, 2025'. The policy, issued on July 9, provides for the acquisition of around 35,500 acres of land across the state through voluntary offers made by landowners on the govt's e-Bhoomi portal. A division bench headed by Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal issued the notice after taking cognisance of a petition filed by Suresh Kumar, a 49-year-old agriculturist from Alewa village in Jind district. The petitioner contended that the policy is nothing but an attempt to circumvent the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 (LARR Act). According to the petition, while the central law prescribes mandatory procedures such as social impact assessments (SIA), gram sabha consultations, and restrictions on the acquisition of multi-cropped land, the impugned policy makes no provision for these safeguards. "There is no enabling provision under the 2013 Act for land pooling or voluntary schemes of this nature. The competent law in Haryana is the Haryana Development and Regulation of Urban Areas Act, 1975, which has been arbitrarily bypassed," it alleges. The petition has also highlighted the role of aggregators, who are entitled to a 1% facilitation fee under the policy. The petitioner contended that institutionalising middlemen opens the door to corruption, exploitation, and unequal treatment of farmers. "Two landowners with identical parcels may end up receiving vastly different compensation, depending on influence and vulnerability," the plea argues. The petition points out that large-scale acquisition of such land without any environmental or social assessment violates Section 10 of the LARR Act, 2013, which restricts the acquisition of multi-cropped irrigated land except under exceptional circumstances. Additionally, the petitioner highlighted the absence of any rehabilitation or resettlement package for landless labourers, artisans, and other rural workers dependent on agriculture for livelihood. It was argued that it contravenes the spirit of the 2013 Act, which recognises the socio-economic impacts of displacement. The matter has been fixed for Sep 23 for hearing. Tirupati sets 16.69% growth target, eyes major industrial & tourism boost
Tirupati: Minister for Endowments Anam Ramanarayana Reddy announced that the district aims to increase its Gross District Domestic Product (GDDP) from Rs 91,478 crore to Rs 1,69,633 crore, marking a targeted growth rate of 16.69 percent. In line with the Swarnandhra@2047 Vision Plan guidelines, comprehensive vision documents have been prepared for Tirupati district, including constituency-level and mandal-level plans. The Minister, who was the chief guest at the 79th Independence Day celebrations in Tirupati on Friday, hoisted the national flag and received a police guard of honour before addressing the gathering. District Collector Dr S Venkateswar, SP V Harshavardhan Raju, Joint Collector Shubham Bansal, Municipal Commissioner N Mourya, and other senior officials attended the celebrations. On this occasion, Reddy highlighted the district's priorities for the future and key achievements over the past year. By implementing the district and mandal vision plans over the next five years, and through coordinated efforts across all departments, the Minister projected that the district's per capita income would rise to Rs 6,01,297 by 2028–29. Under the P4 initiative, 6,197 mentors have so far adopted 60,997 'golden families' out of 80,477 identified in the district. Emphasising the district's favourable environment for industrial investment, the Minister said that 131 mega and large-scale industries have already been established in Tirupati district with an investment of Rs 37,154 crore, generating employment for 75,791 people. In the current financial year alone, 5,886 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have commenced production with an investment of around Rs 191 crore, creating jobs for an additional 12,129 individuals. On tourism, he said the district holds vast potential for growth, with plans to develop temple circuit tourism, beach tourism, and resort facilities to encourage pilgrims to extend their stay by an extra day. Tableaus presented by various departments – including Industries & APIIC, Agriculture, Horticulture & APMIP, DRDA & MEPMA, Municipal Corporation, Tourism, Fire Services, NREDCAP, Education (DEO), and DWMA – attracted wide attention. The Tirupati Municipal Corporation's tableau won first prize, DRDA & MEPMA jointly secured second, and the Agriculture Department took third place. A special jury award was presented to a tableau on Swarna Naravaripalle, jointly exhibited by the District Panchayat Raj and APSPDCL. The Minister also visited departmental stalls showcasing development activities and presented merit certificates to outstanding government staff. Cultural performances at the event received enthusiastic applause from the audience. City MLA Arani Srinivasulu, MLC Balli Kalyana Chakravarthy, Yadava Corporation Chairman G Narasimha Yadav and other leaders were present.
