Recently, Aldi found itself in hot water over something most customers probably didn't even know was an issue -- the store's farmed salmon. When you check on the internet, people really seem to love Aldi's salmon and most people take food packaging at face value, especially if something is marked as a sustainable product. The upper corner of Aldi's salmon packets used to feature the words "Simple. Sustainable. Seafood." Though most customers could see no issue with this, a few advocacy groups saw things differently.
Toxin Free U.S.A. filed a complaint in 2021, accusing Aldi of misleading marketing, stating that the store's salmon reportedly came from Chilean fish farms that used unsustainable practices and toxic chemicals. Plenty of folks were drawn to the "responsibly sourced" label, thinking it meant clean water, healthy fish, and minimal environmental damage. Farmed fish can help reduce overfishing in oceans, but not all farms operate on the same ethical or environmental level. And, once customers learned more, that "simple seafood" started to look a little suspect.

Toxin Free U.S.A., along with legal representation from Richman Law and Policy, filed a full-on complaint. They claimed Aldi was misleading consumers by slapping feel-good labels on fish that didn't live up to the hype. According to the nonprofit, these weren't just any farmed fish, they were raised in conditions that included heavy chemical use and feed laced with ethoxyquin, which is not approved for use in human food in the United States but is still used in fish feed. The presence of that chemical alone was enough to make waves.
So, Aldi's marketing was hit hard as this wasn't a complaint about the fish itself but more about how the fish was sold. In a world where food labels already confuse people, putting a sustainability badge on a product with known red flags felt dishonest. The case drew attention to the gap between marketing buzzwords and actual sourcing practices. Though Aldi eventually settled and agreed to change its labeling, the damage to its reputation had already been done ... or so you'd think.
In response to the pressure, Aldi made some changes. The company didn't admit wrongdoing, but it did agree to adjust its marketing language to avoid future confusion. That meant walking back claims like "sustainable" and rethinking how it promoted its farmed fish. It was a quiet resolution that didn't include any massive recalls or bold press releases; it was just a simple behind-the-scenes fix that most shoppers probably didn't notice. But, for those keeping tabs on food transparency, it was a reminder of how deceptive labels can be.
Aldi's salmon still lines shelves in stores, and many customers continue to buy it without giving much thought to its origin. That's part of the problem, though -- once the scandal faded from headlines, so did the pressure. There's no guarantee that sourcing practices have improved, and watchdog groups are still skeptical about farmed fish from regions like Chile. (Some customers have also said that you should think twice about buying lunch meat from Aldi due to suspiciously lengthy expiration dates.)
At the end of the day, most people want affordable seafood and assume the store has done its homework. For the highest quality, there are certain things you should look for when buying salmon, and if you care about the environment, understanding where your fish comes from should be on that list. If this situation proves anything, it's that "sustainable" isn't always as simple as it sounds.

Aldi's very popular 'Best of British' Special Buys range is back, and shoppers are already going wild over the range that was released on Wednesday. Snacks such as prawn cocktail and Worcestershire sauce chips (AKA crisps), and Galaxy Chocolate Blocks are set to fly off the shelves this week. Other pantry staples such as Yorkshire Tea, Worcestershire Sauce, HP sauce, Bistro Gravy, Branston Pickle and more are included in the list of available goodies this week. However, there are a few items that have caused a bit of confusion. Rachel Houraghan, an Aldi shopper who's originally from Ireland, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that other people who might be missing their favourite foods from back home should get in quick! "I think all the popular things will sell out quickly," she tells us. "I went last year and most things were sold out by the time I had gone in the first week." She explains that while some of the items are available at Coles or Woolworths, they are much more expensive, making the Aldi Special Buys great value. "Also no where ever does prawn cocktail crisps! I love Australia and there is nowhere I'd rather be but it's always nice to have a taste from home." She adds that she's excited to introduce prawn cocktail crisps to her Aussie friends, and also keen to get some Galaxy chocolate bars, but she was least excited by the tea cakes, which she says "were the worst thing" there. As an Irish person, she also tells us, "I wish there was more Irish products as most were British. I would have loved Meanies crisps, Spice Bag seasoning, Chilli Heatwave Doritos!" Thankfully, for anyone wondering, the food all tastes the same as Rachel remembered from back home in Ireland. Many Aldi shoppers shared that they were going to "run" to their local store to get a taste of the British snacks on offer. "I didn't know and went to Aldi last night... I was in heaven," one woman wrote on TikTok. "As I Brit I have never seen cheese and pickle crisps before (but I need them!)," another said. "$50 later and I bought half the shop," a third said, while a fourth added, "My bank is gonna hurt tomorrow." Many others were left confused, however, that the prawn cocktail crisps were Smith's, which is an Aussie brand, instead of Walkers which are British. "What are Smith's? Walkers?" one person questioned. "Smith's crisps are not British!! We have Walkers," another said. Aldi is cutting prices on hundreds of items to help consumers deal with ‘sticker shock' in the rest of the world

Aldi is slashing prices on more than 400 items, aiming to ease consumer concerns over rising grocery bills. The discount grocer announced efforts Tuesday to help its customers across its 2,400 US stores save over $100 million over the summer months. From now until Labor Day, shoppers can expect lower prices on about 25% of its products, including grilling meats, organic produce, pantry items, and other popular summer items. 'Our customers count on Aldi for the lowest prices of any national grocer, every day, and we never take that trust for granted,' Jason Hart, Aldi CEO, said in a news release. 'While customers may see higher prices at other retailers, we're working hard to unlock even more value for our shoppers, just in time for summer's lineup of holidays and gatherings where food takes center stage. It's another way we're doubling down on our commitment to help shoppers fill their carts with great products for less.' The lowered prices come after the Department of Agriculture announced it expects grocery prices to rise by at least 3.3 percent this year. There have been fears of higher prices in the wake of President Donald Trump's 'Liberation Day' announcement of tariffs on goods from most countries around the world earlier this year, and the changing rates and policies since then. 'We want to do what we can to help shoppers,' Scott Patton, Aldi's chief commercial officer, said in a news release. 'Value isn't a trend at Aldi. It's been in our DNA since we opened our first store nearly 50 years ago.' In February, Aldi announced plans to open over 225 new US stores in 2025, aiming for 800 new locations by 2028 as part of a five-year growth strategy. There are currently over 2,500 Aldi stores in the US.

Aldi, the German discount grocer known for creating its own brands of popular processed foods, will open its first Delafield store, and only its third in Lake Country, on June 19. The company recently completed the remodeling of the former OfficeMax store at 2840 Heritage Drive, just east of state Highway 83 along the south side of the Interstate 94 corridor. It's only the second new store planned for Wisconsin in 2025, but one in more than 800 in the works in the U.S. through 2028 including a record-setting 225 stores expected to open this year alone. All rely on shoppers looking to save a few dollars, even in upscale suburban places, according to Aldi officials. Shane Williams, Aldi's regional vice president, cited an Aldi Price Leadership Report that claims Aldi shoppers save 36% on their shopping lists, averaging $4,000 annually. "As shoppers look for better ways to stretch their dollar, Aldi is providing Delafield with easier access to quality groceries at affordable prices," Williams said in a news release announcing the June 19 opening date. Company officials noted that Aldi's exclusive brands make up about 90% of the items in its stores. In addition to processed foods, such as Millville cereals that include Fruit Rounds (akin to Kellogg's Froot Loops), stores also sell organic meats, fresh produce and sustainable seafood. Their cheese and wine selections include a house wine called Winking Owl. Shoppers will find limited-time offers on seasonal foods, home goods and other items. The company also promotes its "sustainability" in product lines, which it says are important to its core shoppers, and offers gluten-free options. In addition to standard offers, the Delafield store, which will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., will include a June 19 promotion for the first 100 customers. Each will receive a gift bag containing exclusive product samples, a gift card and promotion materials. Aldi also has two stores in Waukesha and one store each in Brookfield, Mukwonago, Muskego, Oconomowoc and Pewaukee, along with others in the Milwaukee area.
