Tottenham Hotspur have sacked manager Ange Postecoglou, the club said on Friday, despite the Australian guiding Spurs to their first major trophy in 17 years with victory in the Europa League final last month.
Postecoglou will leave two years to the day after his appointment. Spurs beat Manchester United in Bilbao to win the Europa League and book their place in next season's Champions League, but a dismal domestic campaign ultimately cost Postecoglou his job.
"The Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place," Spurs said in a statement.
"Following a positive start in the 2023-24 Premier League season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season.
"At times there were extenuating circumstances - injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph."
Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League last season, fuelling pressure on the 59-year-old in his second year at the helm.
Spurs finished fifth with 66 points in the Australian's first season, helping them earn a place in the Europa League.
Many pundits believed their continental triumph might be a lifeline for the manager, while he sounded hopeful himself, telling delighted fans during the team's trophy parade: "In all the best television series, season three is better than season two."
But the club's board, who called it one of the "toughest decisions we have had to make," thought otherwise.
"We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon," Spurs said in their statement. "We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future - he will always be welcome back at our home."
Spurs were hit hard by injuries this past season, with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Dejan Kulusevski, Destiny Udogie, Dominic Solanke and James Maddison all missing significant time.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank and Fulham's Marco Silva have both been linked as potential candidates to replace Postecoglou.

Spurs finished sixth in the WSL under Vilahamn in the 2023-24 campaign and reached the FA Cup final which they lost 4-0 to Manchester United. Spurs lost several key players in the summer of 2024 including Grace Clinton and Celine Bizet. Clinton returned to her parent club Manchester United following a successful loan and Bizet joined them permanently too. Spurs endured a dreadful start to the season as they only won one of their opening five games. They were unbeaten for four matches across December and January but have been awful in the second half of the campaign. Vilahamn's side lost five matches in a row, including being thrashed 5-0 by their north London rivals Arsenal. They have not won a game since a 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace on January 26. Sports Seriously Al-Nassr and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo said on Saturday he did not plan to play at the Club World Cup in the United States, despite being courted by clubs participating in the expanded 32-team tournament. Speculation over the 40-year-old's future intensified last month when FIFA President Gianni Infantino said discussions were underway about Ronaldo playing in the Club World Cup, despite Al-Nassr failing to qualify. Al-Nassr's sporting director Fernando Hierro said last month they were negotiating with Ronaldo over a contract extension but faced competition from a host of clubs eager to sign the five-time Ballon d'Or winner. Ronaldo himself added to the uncertainty after Al-Nassr's season-ending match at Al-Fateh, posting on social media: "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written." Asked about the possibility of signing for another club in the coming days in order to play at the Club World Cup later this month, Ronaldo told reporters: "It's irrelevant, at the moment it doesn't make sense to talk about things other than the national team. "There has been plenty of contact (from clubs), I see things that make sense, others that don't. You can't go to all of them (clubs), you have to think short, medium and long term. "It's something that's practically decided on my part, which is not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had plenty of invitations." Arsenal close to finalising Kepa Arrizabalaga deal
Arsenal are close to finalising a deal to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Athletic reported on June 6 that Arsenal had made Arrizabalaga their top target as they look to recruit a deputy to first-choice goalkeeper David Raya. Arsenal had previously targeted Espanyol's Joan Garcia, but Barcelona now appear favourites to sign the 24-year-old. That extension added a year onto his terms, which now run until June 2026, but also significantly reduced his salary. The Spaniard joined Chelsea for a £71.6m fee from Athletic Club in 2018 and has featured 163 times for the west London side, winning four major honours. Having made only 20 appearances during a loan spell at Real Madrid in 2023-24, Arrizabalaga established himself as Bournemouth's first-choice goalkeeper last season, following Neto's temporary switch to Arsenal. The 30-year-old kept nine clean sheets in 35 games for Bournemouth in 2024-25, as Andoni Iraola's side registered the joint sixth-best defensive record in the Premier League. Analysis by Arsenal correspondent James McNicholas Arsenal's staff are long-time admirers of Arrizabalaga, and this is not the first time his name has been raised in recruitment conversations at the club. The affordable price means Arrizabalaga was expected to have various options this summer. Arsenal already have an established No 1 in 29-year-old Raya. Arrizabalaga understands the existing hierarchy at Arsenal, after Raya's strong performance in 2024-25, but is willing to fight for his place in north London. Arsenal believe Arrizabalaga has shown in spells at Chelsea and Real Madrid that he has the attitude and professionalism to support a No 1, having acted at times as understudy to Edouard Mendy at the former and Andriy Lunin at the latter.
