Karnataka's Shakti scheme completes two years
The Shakti scheme, Karnataka's free bus travel initiative for women, marked its second anniversary on June 11 with over 474 crore women passengers having availed the benefit across the State.
Launched on June 11, 2023, by the Congress government, the scheme was one of the five major pre-poll guarantees. The scheme allows women with Karnataka domicile to travel for free in non-premium government buses operated by the four State-run transport corporations-KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC and KKRTC.
According to data shared by the transport department, between June 11, 2023, and June 10, 2025, the four c!orporations together recorded a total of 801.54 crore passenger journeys. Of these, 474.82 crore were women passengers travelling under the Shakti scheme.
The largest number of women beneficiaries were recorded in the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) with over 150.69 crore female passengers. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) followed with 144.23 crore, while North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) reported 111.10 crore and 68.78 crore, respectively.
The total notional ticket value for the free rides availed by women over the two years stands at ₹11,994.37 crore, which the State Government reimburses to the corporations.
Under the scheme, women can board ordinary and express services within Karnataka by showing valid ID proof issued by the State Government or any Central Government document that confirms domicile.
Premium services such as Airavat, Rajahamsa and Vajra are excluded.
Even though the Shakti Scheme has completed two years, the smart cards meant for beneficiaries are yet to be distributed. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said that the plan to issue smart cards is in place, but the rollout is delayed due to the lack of electronic ticketing machines (ETMs) in all buses, making implementation unfeasible.
Currently, women passengers avail free travel by presenting a valid identity card issued by the Central or State government to obtain a 'zero ticket'.

Akram Pasha takes charge as KSRTC Managing Director
Senior IAS officer Akram Pasha assumed charge as the new Managing Director of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) on Wednesday. BMTC's UPI revenues beat expectations, nearing 50%
BENGALURU: BMTC's QR-code-based UPI revenue has crossed the bus corporation's expectations and is almost nearing 50 per cent of the total revenue. 'The bus corporation, when it launched the UPI service only aimed to touch 30 per cent of the revenue through the UPI. However, now the revenue through UPI is nearing 50 per cent,' BMTC chief traffic manager G T Prabhakar Reddy said. In the initial weeks after BMTC rolled out the QR-based ticketing, it faced a lot of resistance from the conductors. Even though people were willing to make payments for the tickets through the QR codes, conductors refused to accept them and insisted on only cash payments. Reddy said that they had to conduct training programmes for their conductors about UPI, how to accept it and how to confirm if the payment is made or not and then issue the tickets. He attributed the increase in revenue to conductor training and the embracement of UPI by BMTC passengers, as they need to worry about providing the exact ticket amount. Reddy shared the revenue through UPI and said, 'BMTC's daily ticket revenue is around Rs 3 crore. In January, the monthly UPI payments stood at Rs 10 crore, jumped to Rs 19 crore in February, Rs 21 crore in March and Rs 24 crore in April. In May, the payment set a new record with Rs 29.5 crore.' In May, the revenue through UPI was 42 per cent. He also informed that in June the revenue will cross 45 per cent.

Women avail 474.82 crore free bus rides across Karnataka
BENGALURU: Shakti, one of the five guarantee schemes of the Congress government in the state, completed two years on Wednesday, clocking a whopping 474.82 crore free rides availed by women in state-run non-premium buses across Karnataka, in that period. The total ticket price of the free rides stood at Rs 11,994 crore. The popular scheme, which was launched on June 11, 2023, was one of the first guarantees implemented after the Congress came to power in Karnataka, and has been receiving an overwhelming response. Officials from the state-run bus corporations said Shakti has not only increased the number of women passengers, but also helped increase the intake of male passengers. Since the launch of the scheme, women across the state have been using the free travel benefit not only to travel to work, but also undertake pilgrimages and leisure tours. Shakti also piqued the interest of other states, like Andhra Pradesh, whose representatives visited KSRTC earlier this year, to learn about its operational framework and the challenges in implementing it, a KSRTC official said.
