The 6 Best All-Purpose Cleaners To Conquer The Toughest Messes

Forbes07-04-2025

A good all-purpose cleaner doesn't just get rid of crumbs and spills—it also makes cleaning feel faster and easier, whether you're wiping down the counters after dinner or scrubbing the bathroom sink on a Saturday morning. After researching and comparing dozens of formulas, we found Clorox Free & Clear Multi-Surface Spray Cleaner to be the best all-purpose cleaner overall. It's strong enough to handle everyday household messes but doesn't include dyes, added fragrance or other common irritants, making it safer to use around kids, pets and food prep areas.
The best all-purpose cleaners make it easier to tackle everyday messes and keep your home feeling ... More fresh.
Depending on what matters most to you, though, another option might be a better fit, whether that's a natural cleaner, something refillable or a formula that leaves a stronger scent behind. After all, different types of cleaners work better for different needs. 'Natural cleaners are effective for light cleaning, while conventional ones perform better for tough stains or grease," says Marla Mock, president of Molly Maid. "Natural is best for daily use; conventional is needed for heavy-duty cleaning." With that in mind, we narrowed down the very best all-purpose cleaners to fit different cleaning routines and help keep your home fresh.

Ideal for everyday cleaning, Clorox Free & Clear is just as effective on a greasy kitchen counter as it is on a smudged bathroom faucet. It's also formulated without harsh ingredients found in a lot of conventional sprays, which can irritate the skin or throat, plus it's EPA Safer Choice–certified, meaning it meets strict standards for ingredient safety without losing effectiveness.
This spray is easy to reach for on a daily basis: It goes on evenly and doesn't leave streaks or residue, no matter what you're cleaning. What's more, there's no overpowering scent that lingers in the air or on your hands, and it doesn't require rinsing. It also works well with different cleaning tools; paper towels, microfiber cloths and sponges all leave a streak-free finish.

Size: 27.1 ounces | Scents: Citrus zest, unscented, grapefruit and lavender | Safe for: Most indoor and outdoor surfaces including counters, appliances and sealed floors

Attitude is one of the few natural cleaners that's been thoroughly vetted and actually backs up its claims. It's EWG Verified and EcoLogo certified, meaning it meets some of the strictest third-party standards for both health and environmental safety. Unlike many 'green' cleaners that only sound good on the label, this all-purpose cleaner has actually gone through independent testing and ingredient audits.
The formula uses 94% naturally derived ingredients, including saponin, which is a plant-based cleansing agent that helps break down dirt without leaving streaks behind. It's available in multiple scents (including unscented), but even the fragranced options avoid harsh additives that can cause irritation. The bottle is recyclable, and Attitude offers concentrated refills if you want to cut down on plastic use. It also doesn't require rinsing, so you can spray and wipe without thinking twice.

Zep's all-purpose cleaner is made for the messes that less powerful options would struggle with. It's a commercial-grade spray that works well on surfaces like tile, fiberglass and stainless steel—especially when you're dealing with heavy grease or stuck-on dirt. Spray it directly onto the surface, wait about a minute, then wipe it away with a damp cloth.
Keep in mind that it's not designed for delicate materials. In particular, you want to avoid using Zep on natural stone, mirrors or glass; it should be tested in a small spot first if you're unsure. And while the scent isn't overpowering, it's not designed for sensitive noses either. If you're using it in a smaller space, cracking a window can help with ventilation.
Amazon
Size: 22 ounces | Scent: Sunrise Memories or Opulence Bloom | Safe for: Kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces, floors and tiles

Pinalen Luxury Scent Spray is made for people who actually want to smell their cleaner after they use it. Crafted by master perfumers, it smells more like a home fragrance or room spray than a typical cleaning product. It's available in two versions, both of which are intentionally strong and lingering, so your space smells freshly cleaned even hours later.
Of course, this spray still functions as a proper all-purpose cleaner; it cuts through grease, lifts everyday grime and works across kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces and floors. But the scent is the reason to buy it. If you like the idea of your home smelling polished and scented after you clean, Pinalen leans into that. If you prefer something lighter or more neutral, it might be too much.
Branch Basics
Size: 33.8 ounces | Scent: Fragrance free | Safe for: Most sealed surfaces including countertops, bathrooms, glass and dishes
Best for:

Branch Basics makes it easy to set up a refillable system without a lot of extra steps. You start with the Cleaning Essentials Kit, which includes the main concentrate and three reusable bottles for all-purpose cleaning, bathrooms and streak-free surfaces. Each bottle has simple fill lines to show exactly how much water and concentrate to add. Once you're set up, you only need to reorder the concentrate, which most customers say lasts for months, even with regular use.
The formula itself is plant- and mineral-based, free from common irritants and gentle enough to use around kids and pets. While it's not designed to disinfect, it can handle grease, dirt and other messes across most surfaces. Branch Basics also offers a discounted subscribe-and-save option if you want to automate refills, which can make the upfront cost feel more worthwhile over time.

Size: 32 ounces | Scent: Original | Safe for: Hard, nonporous bleach-safe surfaces including countertops, appliances, bathroom tile and outdoor furniture
Best for:

Clorox Clean-Up Cleaner + Bleach is what we grab when we need to clean and disinfect at the same time. It's a strong spray designed to clean and disinfect and deodorize in one step, which makes it especially useful for places like bathroom sinks and kitchen counters, plus any other high-touch surfaces where grime and germs build up. The built-in bleach helps cut through tough stains, mold, mildew and more, while also killing 99.9% of bacteria and viruses.
That power comes with a few important caveats. It's meant only for hard, nonporous surfaces that are bleach-safe, like tile, porcelain, sealed countertops and outdoor furniture. It's not a good fit for natural stone, wood or anything prone to damage from harsh cleaners. You'll also want to use it in a well-ventilated space and follow the label directions closely, letting the surface stay visibly wet for at least 30 seconds before wiping and rinsing. If you're using it in a kitchen, make sure to rinse surfaces that come into direct contact with food.
At Forbes Vetted, we've researched and recommended hundreds of home and cleaning products, from the best vacuum cleaners to a lifechanging dish spray, to help our readers find solutions that make everyday life easier.
To find the best all-purpose cleaners, we looked at dozens of formulas across a range of types, strengths and cleaning styles. Some of the sprays on this list have been used firsthand by our editors, while others were selected based on strong expert recommendations and customer reviews.
Every home needs at least one all-purpose cleaner to tackle stains, messes and more. Here's what to consider as you shop.
A good all-purpose cleaner should match the type of cleaning you do most often. For everyday messes like spills or fingerprints, a lighter natural formula is usually enough. For bigger jobs, like scrubbing out a greasy kitchen sink or deep-cleaning the bathroom, you may want something stronger. As Mock explains, heavy-duty cleaners are especially useful for cutting through grease or removing germs in high-traffic areas, but they typically contain harsher chemicals.
All-purpose cleaners come in a few different formats, including ready-to-use sprays and concentrated formulas. Concentrates offer the best value over time, since a single bottle can make multiple refills, but sprays are more convenient for grab-and-go use. Wipes are also handy for quick cleanups, though they can be less cost-effective if you're covering larger areas. Mock recommends concentrates because they last a long time and reduce waste, especially if you clean frequently.
It's smart to check the label if you're cleaning around kids, pets or food prep areas. Mock advises avoiding cleaners with harsh ingredients like ammonia, bleach and phthalates, which can be irritating or harmful with frequent use. If you want a cleaner you can reach for every day, a plant- or mineral-based formula may be the better fit. For deeper cleaning or disinfecting, a conventional formula might make more sense; just be sure it's safe for the surfaces you're using it on.

What If Something Happens To The Person In Control Of An Irrevocable Trust? Suze Orman Weighs In

When a listener named Kim wrote to Suze Orman's "Women & Money" podcast, she shared a common concern: Her family was overwhelmed by estate planning. Kim explained that her parents were considering setting up both a revocable trust and an irrevocable trust. Their goal? To stay in control of their assets while they're healthy and to potentially shield those assets — like their home and savings — if they ever need to enter a nursing home. But Kim and her family were confused. Would this strategy actually protect their assets? And what happens if the person managing the trust — known as the trustee — can't do the job anymore? Don't Miss: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — Deloitte's fastest-growing software company partners with Amazon, Walmart & Target – Many are rushing to Orman encouraged Kim and her family to slow down and consider the bigger picture: "People first, then money, then things." That's been her mantra for more than two decades. While an irrevocable trust can, in some cases, protect assets from being counted for Medicaid eligibility, Orman pointed out a major trade-off: "It no longer is part of your estate. It's now out of your hands. Somebody else is in control of it — you are not." That loss of control can create problems down the line, especially if the trustee dies or becomes incapacitated. "What happens if something happens to the person who has control over it? It can become very, very complicated," Orman said. Trending: Invest where it hurts — and help millions heal:. Kim's family was also hoping the irrevocable trust would help cover nursing home care. Orman warned against relying on Medicaid as a solution. In her view, the quality of care for Medicaid patients often isn't comparable to that of private-pay residents. She pointed out that some nursing homes are already closing due to a lack of funding, and future changes to Medicaid or Medicare could make the situation worse. "To put this money, your parents' money, in front of their care just so you could be OK and have the money, the house can be protected, is not something that I advise," she said. While she was critical of irrevocable trusts in this situation, Orman did support the idea of a revocable trust — a legal tool that allows the creators (usually the parents) to stay in full control of their assets. If they become incapacitated, a successor trustee can step in. When they pass away, the assets can go directly to heirs without going through parents were on the right track by also looking into a durable power of attorney and healthcare directive — documents Orman includes in what she calls the "must-have documents" for every estate plan. Irrevocable trusts may sound like a great way to protect assets, but they come with significant limitations and long-term consequences — especially if the trustee can no longer serve. For families like Kim's, Orman's advice is clear: prioritize flexibility and personal care over trying to preserve wealth at all costs. A revocable trust, paired with essential legal documents, can offer both control and peace of mind as loved ones age. Read Next: Can you guess how many retire with a $5,000,000 nest egg? . The Best Walking Shoes For Older Adults, According To Podiatrists

For people who walk frequently, choosing the right walking shoe is super important to prevent your feet from aching and developing or worsening painful foot conditions. But wearing the proper supportive footwear is especially essential for older adults, said Dr. Chanel J. Perkins, a board-certified podiatrist based in Texas. 'Supportive shoes help maintain balance and alignment, which are necessities in this population since they are at a greater fall risk,' she told HuffPost. 'They also help decrease pedal muscle fatigue and overall soreness since biomechanics forces are evenly distributed throughout the shoe.' Perkins described the best shoes for older people as ones that are lightweight and breathable to prevent sweaty feet. They should also be well-cushioned, have good traction on the soles to prevent slips and falls and be easy to get on and off. If you or a loved one is in need of a new pair of walking shoes, consider the ones recommended below by Perkins and other podiatrists. Amazon This Brooks Ghost sneaker is known for its signature cushioning, which provides firm support and a midsole that evenly absorbs the impact of your foot, no matter how it lands. We couldn't help but include this sneaker as an editor's pick. In previous reporting, HuffPost Shopping editor Emily Ruane noted that her mom and her daughters' nanny — both active older women in their 60s — rely on the exact same pair of Ghost running shoes to stay light on their feet while they garden, run after kids (and grandkids) and do a whole lot of walking. Her mother has undergone bunion surgery and has hammer toes, and likes that the shoes are available in wide widths to accommodate her custom orthotics. She finds the toe box to be roomy and well-constructed enough to comfortably accommodate her feet. (She's actually on her second pair; the first lasted her almost four years before she needed to replace them a little under a year ago.) Ruane's children's nanny logs thousands of steps a day, and she told her that, '[t]hese shoes are the best.' And HuffPost readers (and reviewers) tend to agree. Get these for men and women at retailers like Amazon, DSW, Zappos and the Brooks website. Women's: $150 at Amazon Men's: 150 at Zappos Zappos Dr. Mireille Blanchette, a board-certified podiatrist based in New Jersey, recommended this lace-up Skechers sneaker because of its comfort and the fact that it's machine washable to help prevent bacteria buildup. "Elders can sometimes develop foot fungus because they might not always be able to clean well between the toes and that can create a great environment for fungus," she shoe is designed with a pull tab on the back to make it easier to put on and take off and is lined in breathable fabric to promote air circulation. It comes in multiple colors and in women's sizes 5-12 and men's sizes 7-15, both with wide options available. Promising review: "Bought these shoes for my mom. She needed something with good support that was energizing and helped with footing and movement. These shoes did the job. Her footing, posture and movement have improved tremendously. I bought them for her because I own a pair and have excellent wear with them." — Mom Women's: $78+ at Zappos Men's: $98 at Zappos Vionic Stamped with the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance, this Vionic shoe is another recommendation from Perkins. It's breathable, has a podiatrist-designed footbed, cushioned outsole and a rubber outsole built for steady traction. It comes in several color options and is available in women's sizes 5-12 and men's sizes 7-14. Promising review: "I received Vionic sneakers for Christmas. I wear a wide with in shoes and was skeptical that the shoes would fit well. I wore them for one day and noticed a marked decrease in my hip pain. I am thrilled with these shoes." — jrg Women's: $95 at Vionic Men's: $170 at Vionic Amazon Perkins recommended this Adidas option, which is made from recycled plastics and has supportive interior padding and great grip on the sole. It comes in men's sizes 4-17 and in multiple colors, including black, orange, black/purple, gray/mint and white. It has a sock-like fit and a "boosting" feature, a super responsive midsole that makes it easier to take steps. Promising review: "Extraordinarily comfortable shoe. I have flat feet, getting older with hip creaks here and there. My legs and joints feel great when wearing these shoes. Ultraboost is impressive stuff." — Amazon customer $150+ at Amazon Amazon Available in multiple colors, including blue, pink, maroon, gray and black, this walking shoe has a cushioned footbed and orthotic insole designed to help those with various foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis. It also has a roomy toe box for added comfort and bunion and hammertoe relief. "The slip-on design makes it perfect for seniors who have a hard time bending over to tie a shoe or for those with arthritis in the hands who find difficulty with tying laces," Perkins comes in women's sizes 5-12, with narrow, wide and extra-wide and extra-extra-wide review: "I bought these walking shoes for my sister's birthday. She just turned 69 years old last week and she called me today to say that she thought these shoes were the best shoes she had ever put on. She has bad feet and see's a podiatrist on a regular schedule. She said she can wear them all day and not feel any foot pain." — Tony A. $115 at Amazon Zappos For a shoe that offers stability and supportive cushioning, look no further than this New Balance shoe recommended by Dr. Gary Evans, a podiatrist based in New York City. It has a breathable lining, durable rubber outsole and a footbed that provides proper cushioning and arch support. It comes in black, gray and navy and in women's sizes 5-13 and men's sizes 7-16. Promising review: "This is my 8th pair of 990's! Wife and I are "exercise walkers". We are now older and are x-triathletes. Aerobic paced walking of 3-7 miles per day is what we enjoy. My 990's are fantastic for preventing injuries and providing a comfortable walk." — No N Women's: $184.95 at Zappos Men's: $200 at Zappos Amazon This Dr. Comfort shoe checked off multiple boxes on Perkins' list of things to look for when buying a shoe for older adults, including its spacious toe box, lightweight design and Velcro strap. "The most common complaint I hear from my senior patients is that a shoe is too heavy for them to wear comfortably. Any no-tie, slip-on or Velcro design that allows easy on and easy off is also great for seniors who have a hard time bending over," she said. The adjustable strap closure allows you to get a more customized fit. The design also has a protective toe box that can help prevent pain from toe stubbing. It comes in white and pink and in women's sizes 4-12 with wide and extra-wide review: "I have problems with width in shoes. This fits better than expected. Comfortable in toe box and I even have a skip in my step thanks to the heel shock absorbing the bounce. Easy to put on with the velcro strap as the sole support to hold the shoe in place. Do not skip owning these shoes!" — snoopymaven $165 at Amazon Amazon This classic, minimalist walking shoe recommended by Evans has all the features your feet need to stay comfy throughout the day, including a lightweight insole, rubber soles for good grip and a full-grain leather upper. It comes in white and black and in women's sizes 5-12 and men's sizes 7-14, both with wide options available. Promising review: "I love these shoes. The support for the foot and ankle is extraordinary. My legs don't feel fatigued when I wear these shoes. My back and hips don't hurt either. I have rheumatoid arthritis, a repaired tendon in my knee and a small tear in an ankle (I know right...) but these shoes make me feel well supported when walking and comfortable. I highly recommend." — Aunie Women's: $64+ at Amazon Men's: $70 at Zappos Zappos This lace-up shoe is made of breathable mesh and has a removable Skechers Arch Fit insole.
