OPINION: Blitzboks still a quality outfit, but they need to be more consistent

All's well that ends well.
That's surely what the Blitzboks players and their coach Philip Snyman must be thinking following their victory in the 'winner-takes-all' grand finale of the Sevens season in Los Angeles at the weekend.
The SA Sevens team pulled off a remarkable victory to bag the World Championship title for the 2024/25 season, after experiencing a rather disappointing regular season.
They beat Spain in the final in LA on Sunday, after earlier beating New Zealand in the semi-finals. In pool play on Saturday, they beat France, Great Britain and Argentina, all teams who have given the Blitzboks troubles in the last few years.
The only other highlight for Snyman and Co over the season was their victory at their home tournament in Cape Town in December.
While they were tournament runners-up in Vancouver not too long ago, the other four tournaments they played in ended disappointingly.
In the opener in Dubai late last year they finished sixth, in Perth they were third place playoff runners-up, while in Hong Kong and Singapore, the two last tournaments before the Los Angeles 'grand finale' they delivered their worst performances of the season, finishing ninth on each occasion.
Lack of consistency
That they managed to turn things around so quickly shows just how fast things can change in sport, and especially in the Sevens game.
The reality is the Blitzboks team are a quality outfit with very strong players, but things can unravel quickly in a game and in a tournament. And that's what's happened to the SA team in the last few years … they've played excellently in parts, but then been poor in many matches as well.
The lack of consistency has hurt them, but as they showed in winning the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics last year, after qualifying through the back door, and now winning in LA, this Blitzboks team should not be written off. They seem to thrive under pressure, when the moment demands a strong performance, and that bodes well for the future.
Let's hope this victory will spur them on and they can push hard for the World Cup title next year.

Teen sensation Mbekezeli Mbokazi impresses on Bafana Bafana debut

One for the future! Orlando Pirates' Mbekezeli Mbokazi impressed on his international debut for Bafana Bafana when they took on Mozambique in Polokwane on Tuesday night. Photo: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Image: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix On Tuesday evening, South Africans witnessed the first steps in international football of a player who could go on to become the greatest defender this country has ever produced. Bafana Bafana beat Mozambique 2-0 after an assured performance at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. At the heart of the home team's defence was one Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who did not put a foot wrong despite playing international football for the very first time. Mbokazi is just 19 years old, but his performance at the back was that of a seasoned veteran. He was always in the right place at the right time and knew what to do when he had the ball at his feet – attributes that are rare to find in a player so young. Following Tuesday's debut, Aaron Mokoena, the only man to play over 100 times for Bafana Bafana, was impressed with Mbokazi, a player he once coached at junior level, and praised Hugo Broos' impact on youngsters. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. 'I think this coach is one coach who will leave a serious foundation for us,' Bafana's skipper at the 2010 World Cup said during the SABC3 broadcast. 'I mean, these are international standards, senior international standards… I coached him at the U20s. He could play left-back, but today the interceptions that he had gave me the belief that he deserves a chance to be part of the squad.' It's easy to forget that Mbokazi was playing in the Multichoice Diski Challenge at the beginning of last season. After he was promoted to Pirates' first team, he convinced Jose Riveiro and the rest of the technical staff at the club that he belonged at that level. And it didn't take long for Bafana coach Broos to jump on the bandwagon. "I think what I saw from Mbokazi was, for me, his game is very mature. He takes good decisions, and he's a good defender – he's not the tallest, but he wins aerial duels," the Belgian Broos said in the lead-up to the June friendlies. "He's 1.80m, I think, but he doesn't lose many duels. He has good positioning and reads the attack well, so yeah, he's a good defender." Despite still being a teenager, Mbokazi has done enough to ensure that he gets more opportunities at international level, and South Africans should be excited about his potential. After Riveiro jumped ship and headed to Al Ahly in Egypt, reports suggested he was keen on taking the youngster with him. It still remains to be seen if that interest is concrete. Regardless, he is one player who will likely move abroad in no time. Mbokazi should now just focus on improving and hope he avoids injuries. We have had players with his potential in the past. Rivaldo Coetzee was also just a teenager when he made his international debut, and big things were expected from the man from Kakamas in the Northern Cape. However, an injured foot back in 2017 stopped him from moving to Europe. After securing a big-money move from Ajax Cape Town to Mamelodi Sundowns, it looked like he was going places, but more injuries saw him become a bit-part player at the club. Now at just 28 years old, when he should be at the peak of his football career, Coetzee is on the hunt for a new club after being released by Sundowns. Mbokazi will be hoping none of that happens to him. If Tuesday night was anything to go by, South African football may have found its next defensive lynchpin – a player with the poise, intelligence and hunger to go where few local defenders ever have. But talent alone isn't enough. The challenge now is consistency, staying grounded, and navigating the physical and mental demands that come with top-level football. Mbokazi has made a statement with his debut; the real journey begins from here. If managed well, and protected from the pitfalls that have undone others before him, this 19-year-old from Hluhluwe in northern KwaZulu-Natal could become more than just a promising player – he could be the standard-bearer for a new generation of Bafana Bafana defenders. Springbok Women survive late rally from Kenya to maintain unbeaten run at Rugby Africa Cup

The Springbok Women's poor ball retention almost came back to bite them as they survived a late onslaught to hold off the Kenya Lionesses 19-12 in their Rugby Africa Women 's Cup clash at the Stade Makis in Antananarivo, Madagascar on Wednesday. The South Africans – who thrashed Uganda 62-7 in their tournament opener – were dominant in the opening 40 minutes, but could only muster 12 points from two tries and a conversion. The Bok Women, who are using the tournament as preparation for the World Cup in September, got stuck into the Kenyans from the start. The forwards, with the likes of tighthead prop Nombuyekezo Mdliki, captain and lock Anathi Qolo and hooker Luchell Hanekom prominent, made serious inroads on attack with their strong carries, and they were backed up by backs such as wing Patience Mokone and fullback Byrhandr é Dolf. But the Bok Women battled to finish off a number of attacking moves, with their handling letting them down as they either lost possession or conceded breakdown turnover or penalty at crucial times inside the Kenyan 22. That trend continued in the second half, and despite enjoying a healthy advantage in the scrums and playing with great physicality, SA were met with courageous defence by the determined Kenyans. The Bok Women started off well enough, with powerful centre Aphiwe Ngwevu charging over from close range after a clever inside pass from flyhalf Mary Zulu. But the South Africans had to wait until the 35th minute to add to their tally, when red-haired wing Mokone's dazzling run was finished off by flank Lerato Makua. The defending champions never looked in any danger of losing the game despite their frustrating time on attack, and replacement loose forward Nobuhle Mjwara's touchdown with less than 15 minutes to go seemed to seal the victory. But Kenya never gave up, and two late tries led to a thrilling finish. Wing Freshia Awino got the East Africans on the scoreboard with good pace down the left flank, and a few minutes later, replacement prop Noleen Khaleyi dived over after a stunning counter-attack from inside their own half. Suddenly it was 19-12 with five minutes to go, and the South Africans looked like they had lost their grip on the encounter.
