Dhanbad railway div slips to third spot in freight loading due to rain, infra overhaul
1 2 Dhanbad: The Dhanbad Rail Division, which held the top position in freight loading, slipped to third place in July. The division recorded 13.64 metric tonnes of freight loading in July, with heavy rainfall cited as the primary reason for the decline. Divisional railway manager (DRM) Akhilesh Mishra during the monthly performance review on Monday said Bilaspur topped the list with 15.26 metric tonnes, followed by Kurnool with 14.55 metric tonnes, while Dhanbad stood third in July. Dhanbad also lagged in passenger revenue. The cumulative data from April to July shows Bilaspur at the top with 63.19 metric tonnes, followed by Dhanbad at 62.67 metric tonnes, and Kurnool at third with 57.31 metric tonnes. Despite the dip in loading volume, Dhanbad division, however, reported higher freight earnings in July — Rs 1,695.476 crore — compared to Bilaspur's Rs 1,667.042 crore. DRM Mishra said, "Apart from excessive rain, the division focused heavily on infrastructure development over the past two to three months, leading to the dip in transport." Plans are also under way to give the Dhanbad railway station a world-class makeover. The existing building will be replaced with a modern facility equipped with state-of-the-art amenities. The design for the new station building has been finalised, and the estimated cost has been approved. Two additional lines will be added from the north side of the Dhanbad station, beyond platform number 1, officials said.
