NU Academic Council Allows Carry-On One Last Time
The decision was taken through a 12/3 majority vote. Another 12 members of the council were not present at the meeting. Last year too, the NU allowed carry-on as a one-time exception and held a special examination.
The carry-on provision allows admission to the academic year 2025-26 for students who haven't cleared even a single subject from their previous semesters in their entire course. Last month, the NU had rejected the proposal to allow carry-on as these students had already got three attempts to clear their subjects, besides the move adversely impacted the university's academic calendar.
NU officials and teachers across the board had expressed concerns over the quality of education if carry-on was allowed.
Acting vice-chancellor Madhavi Khode Chavare said the university is not going to hold any special exam, and these students will have to appear in the regular exam. The acting VC said carry-on is not applicable to six courses governed by the Pharmacy Council of India and NCTE (National Council of Teachers Education).
NU officials said students led by various political groups had intensified their protests following the rejection of the proposal. "They were emboldened by the recent decisions of other universities to allow carry-on and repeatedly cited the same as a reason for NU to follow suit," officials said.
Earlier, top NU officials tested the authenticity of these applicants demanding carry-on and grew suspicious about their background. "In some cases, those demanding carry-on didn't actually know what it meant. Later, when top officers explained to them, they gave up their demand," officials said.
However, the issue took a new turn when some political outfits created social media channels and groups to run a campaign. This led to a flooding of emails to the university officials and office bearers.

Overseas, local candidates compete for Nagpur University vice-chacnellor's post
Nagpur: The race for the vice-chancellor's chair at Nagpur University (NU) has drawn a diverse mix of contenders, from serving vice-chancellors, including one from a foreign university, to former statutory officers, ex-heads of statutory regulatory bodies, and over a dozen of the NU's own professors. The search-cum-selection committee, which met in Mumbai on Thursday, began the process of scrutinising the applications for the post. According to insiders, around 70 applications were received so far. The committee is expected to complete the scrutiny soon and call shortlisted candidates for interviews by the end of this month or in early September. Sources said the applicant from abroad was earlier shortlisted and even selected for a state university post but chose not to join at the time. "This time, the candidate has shown interest again, which adds an interesting twist to the competition," said an official familiar with the process. In addition, a sitting vice-chancellor from within the state is among the aspirants, while another from outside Maharashtra, who previously headed a college here, is eyeing a comeback. Some principals and professors from affiliated colleges have also thrown their hats in the ring. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Best SIP Plans for NRIs in Belarus – Get ₹2L Monthly Pension | Invest ₹18K PB Learn More Undo Among the internal contenders, 12 senior professors from various departments of NU have applied. "It's rare to see such a large number of internal faculty applying at once," said a senior academic. The search committee, constituted under the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016, is mandated to recommend a panel of names to the chancellor, who will make the final appointment. If timelines are maintained, the new vice-chancellor could be appointed by September for the over 100-year-old university. NU students council poll among demands raised at Gadkari's Janata Darbar
Nagpur: The last election for Nagpur University (NU) student council was held in September 2019 and now demand is being made to conduct a fresh election. The demand was taken up on Sunday at Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's Janata Darbar, where other issues like space for a Muslim kabrastan, salaries for teachers in Naxal-affected border villages, and job reinstatement were also raised. National Students' Union of India (NSUI) district member Abdul Reheman claimed that student representation has weakened and left major issues unresolved at NU in absence of a students' council. "The union has renewed calls to continue with the "carry-on" system. This is about fairness and the future of thousands of students. We will push until the rules are revised and elections are held," Reheman said. He noted that while the student body's tenure is technically one year, the election process itself takes nearly two months, with official notices consuming another 6-8 months. "Gadkari has directed NU core committee member Vishnu Chande to look into the matter," said Rehemen. Some citizens present at the Janata Darbar sought urgent attention to their civic grievances. Farukh Sheikh from Jaripatka said the Muslim graveyard in his locality is full, forcing families to bury loved ones in distant areas. "A graveyard is not just land; it's the final resting place. Denying a place for it in one's own locality is against dignity," he said. "Now, I am selling tea outside the station. I am asking for the right to work with dignity," she said. A teacher from Bhandara appealed against reduced salaries for employees in Naxal-affected border villages, warning it demoralises staff despite lingering security risks. The Al Nushrat Foundation, which supports underprivileged children and families, sought Gadkari's help for an ambulance and computers to provide free Aadhaar, ration, and voter card services. Gadkari advised them to apply under govt schemes. Residents of Ghughus, Chandrapur, demanded completion of the long-delayed flyover near Rajiv Ratan Chowk railway crossing, saying the four-year delay has led to congestion and accidents. Mala Meshram, a local resident, recalled a mother and newborn died at the crossing, underscoring the urgent need for action.
