Strategic independence crucial in critical areas: V.K. Saraswat
Dr. Saraswat was speaking on 'Driving towards an Atmanirbhar Bharat through innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) monetisation' after inaugurating the National Technology Day celebrations at the CSIR-National Institute of Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST).
Strategy autonomy, resilient supply chains, domestic innovation capacity and technological sovereignty are vital aspects, he said. 'Strategic independence is crucial in critical areas where dependence weakens sovereignty or delays development or limits national innovation,' he said.
India feels proud that weapons and equipment developed by the Indian scientific community in collaboration with industry partners performed so well during Operation Sindoor, he said. These contributions stand testament to the self-reliance India has achieved through the efforts of the scientific community, he said.
Dr. Saraswat said his definition of self-reliance as 'the independence from controls of the international community.' This is vital in all sectors including trade and technology, he said. He defined leadership in science and technology, sustainability and green growth, entrepreneurship and digital economy and youth-led innovation as the foundations of the concept of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat.'
Dr. Saraswat called for an IP-embedded governance model that supports the concept of 'Viksit Bharat's' goals for a $5 trillion economy. He underscored the need to shift India's Intellectual Property landscape from 'portfolio to performance.'
Despite India's large startup base and innovation potential, low patent filings, weak IP culture in academia and MSMEs, and poor technology transfer from labs to markets hinder progress.
C. Anandharamakrishnan, Director, CSIR-NIIST, presided. He highlighted the importance of technologies developed by CSIR-NIIST, emphasising their relevance in addressing pressing societal and industrial needs, including applications in strategic sectors. Five technologies developed by CSIR-NIIST were transferred at the event.

Speaking at the 'Gyan Sabha', a national education conference organised by the Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, Bhagwat said, "Yogi Arvind said that it is God's will for the Sanatan Dharma to rise and for the rise of Sanatan Dharma, the rise of the Hindu nation is inevitable. It must also grow rich in economic terms,' Bhagwat said, stressing that strength and prosperity are essential for India to find its rightful place in the global order. Touching on the theme of national identity, Bhagwat made a strong case for preserving the name 'Bharat' without translation. 'Bharat is a proper noun. It should not be translated. 'India is Bharat' — that's true. But Bharat is Bharat. In every context — whether personal or public, while speaking or writing — we should say Bharat,' he emphasised. The RSS chief also spoke at length about the purpose and values of education, stating that true education empowers an individual to live independently while inculcating a spirit of sacrifice and selflessness. 'Education that teaches selfishness is not real education,' he declared. He further said that education is not confined to schools alone but extends to the home and society. 'The environment in which children grow up plays a crucial role. Society must reflect on what kind of atmosphere is needed to raise a confident and responsible generation,' Bhagwat said. The conference was attended by Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, along with several senior academicians and vice-chancellors from across India. President of Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, Dr Pankaj Mittal, Secretary Dr Atul Kothari, Coordinator A Vinod, Chairman of Cochin Shipyard Madhu Nair were also present. Meet TF-2000: Super advanced air defence destroyer developed by Turkey, it is capable of..., is it a matter of concern for India?
(File) TF-2000 Destroyer: In another major move to boost its military power, Turkey announced that it will build an air defense destroyer ship and four additional patrol ships to bolster the maritime capabilities of the Turkish Navy. According to media reports, state-owned ship builder ASFAT, has secured the contract to build the TF-2000, Turkey's first homegrown warship, which will be built in about 60 blocks, and is expected to be completed by 2030. The company will also build four patrol ships based on Turkey's existing Ada-class corvettes, within the next 36 months, reports said. What is the TF-2000 destroyer? As per Turkish media reports, the TF-2000 destroyer will be about 149 meters in length, 21 meters in width, and will feature a landing platform for a 15-ton military helicopter. The destroyer will be designed to operate in violent seas and able to withstand tidal waves as high as 4 meters, they said. Additionally, the TF-2000 will be able operate for 45 days with requiring any re-supply, and will be capable of remaining at sea for 180 days, while receiving receiving support from the shore. On the weapons front, the state-of-the-destroyer will be equipped with a vertical launching system, a 127 mm naval gun, torpedo launcher, close-in weapons system and electronic warfare sensors. The ship is expected to have a service life of over 40 years, as per the reports. How TF-2000 will boost Turkey's naval strength? While primarily designed for air defense, the TF-2000 warship will essentially be a multirole destroyer, capable of anti-submarine, anti-surface and electronic warfare, anti-insurgency and special operations, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance tasks. AFSAT will also build four additional patrol boats, based on Turkey's previously developed Ada-class corvette design. The 100 meter long, and 14 meter wide boats will be capable of carrying military helicopters like the S-70B Seahawk, and feature a wide array of weapons including 76 mm naval guns, vertical launchers, close-in weapon systems and anti-submarine and missile systems. Experts believe the TF-2000 and Hisar-class ships will significantly bolster Turkey's naval capabilities and will also strengthen the security of its maritime borders with rival nations like Israel, Greece and Cyprus. Additionally, the new ships will further boost Turkey's reputation and presence in the global arms market. Why India is concerned? Turkey, along with China and Azerbaijan, were among the few countries that openly supported Pakistan during the recent India-Pakistan conflict. Ahead of Operation Sindoor, Turkey, which has strengthened its military ties with Pakistan in recent times, had reportedly docked its warship at the Karachi Port, to deter any sea-based attack on the country by the Indian Navy. Additionally, Turkey also armed the Pakistani forces with advanced military drones like the Bayraktar TB2, which were actively used against Indian installations during Operation Sindoor.
