Three football fans dead and over 80 injured in horror stadium disaster after title win
The awful incident happened at the end of a match between MC Alger and NC Magra at the Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers, Algeria.
Three football fans have tragically died and over 80 have been left injured after a horror stadium disaster.
The awful incident happened at the end of a match between MC Alger and NC Magra at the Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers, Algeria, on Saturday.
The stadium holds around 64,200 people and the tragic event unfolded after MC Alger were confirmed as league title winners as a result of a 0-0 draw, prompting jubilant celebrations.
However, as reported by the Mirror, a picture of joy became a scene of horror when a security barrier gave way, sending several supporters from the top tier of the stadium tumbling.
The Algerian Ministry of Health released grave figures in their statement, which said: "The Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 injured people, while three deaths were recorded. Ben Aknoun Hospital also received 27 injured people, while Bab El Oued Hospital received 16."
As tributes poured in, MC Alger's players and staff offered to donate blood to the hospitals for those affected by the incident. The club is grieving, having confirmed the identity of one tragic casualty.
In a message relayed by officials at the club, they said: "It is with great sadness and sorrow and with hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands.
"The board of directors, all members of management, all the team and players, come forward with sincere condolences and the most sincere condolences to all the family members of the deceased and their family."
Event organisers promptly halted any further celebrations set for MC Alger's championship win, as emergency services rushed to attend the scene. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune extended his deepest sympathies to all impacted by the disaster.
He wrote on X: "Following the painful incident that befell the supporters of MC Alger at the Stade du 5 Juillet, I can only pray for the soul of the deceased supporter. May God have mercy on him and grant him a place in his vast paradise.

"We offer our condolences to his family, his fellow supporters and the MC Alger team. I pray for the recovery of those injured in the incident and their swift return to their loved ones."
The stadium was christened after the date Algeria proclaimed independence in July 1962. It once held 110,000 spectators during an international friendly match between Algeria and Serbia in 2010.
However, due to the need to adhere to current football safety standards, the stadium's capacity has been reduced to 64,200. Before this unfortunate incident, there were plans to safely increase the stadium's capacity back up to 80,000.

Kyogo gets Celtic tongues wagging with love note as Strelec transfer trigger and Yamada address escalate striker hunt
Business is picking up at Parkhead with Callum Osmand and Bejamin Nygren set to check in Stade Rennes misfit Kyogo Furuhashi has beamed with pride over his time at Celtic with the club searching for a striker. It comes with his future at the Ligue 1 side in major doubt amid reports he could join Birmingham City. The Scottish champions are set to bring in Fulham talent Callum Osmand this summer - and the 19-year-old looks set to be given the chance to stake a first-team claim this summer. He will aim to provide competition for Adam Idah and Daizen Maeda next term - but the search for a frontman doesn't appear to have stopped with the prospect. The Japan international struggled to even make the matchday squad in the final weeks of the season - and has yet to find the net for his new club. Reports in France have suggest a move back to Celtic Park could be on the cards - but Birmingham City appear to be leading the race for the 30-year-old after their return to the English Championship. After making an appearance in front of the crowd at FC Gifu - his first professional team - he reflected on his time at Celtic stating to Japanese media:"I'm proud to have played in that environment.' The Parkhead fan favourite also hinted he may not be rushing for the Rennes exit - despite falling down the pecking order under Habib Beye. He said: 'I may not be as visible as a striker, but I think it's my role to lift up the others and work hard.' A replacement for the Parkhead fan favourite could be on the cards with the door open for David Strelec. He was was the subject of a £7.5m offer from the Hoops in January - with the Slovakian champions holding out for £9million. Strelec wrapped up the campaign with 25 goals to his name and hasn't been shy in opening the door to a Celtic switch. Director of football Robert Vittek admits that the club could be forced to sell this summer, telling Tvnoviny: "Of course, we won't resist if an offer comes that we will accept, but I'd rather not count on it." Celtic are also reportedly keen on Kawasaki Frontale frontman Shin Yamada this summer. But the 25-year-old refused to be drawn on the attention from Glasgow's east end - telling Sponichi:"Right now I want to do my best in the next game." Arsenal face Rodrygo transfer wait as Real Madrid's stance on sale emerges
Arsenal have identified Rodrygo as a top summer target in their search for a quality left winger but it may take time for a deal for the Real Madrid superstar to materialise Arsenal may have to play a waiting game to land Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo. The Gunners are chasing an elite level left winger and the Brazil international is on their radar as an ambitious target for this summer. Real Madrid may be willing to allow Rodrygo to leave this summer - but would demand in excess of £70m and his wage demands would make him one of Arsenal 's top earners. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has had conversations with a raft of top clubs, agents and stars this summer and there is a belief that Real Madrid may be willing to do business. Rodrygo, 24, may also fancy a fresh challenge even though he currently makes up one of football's most fearsome forward lines with Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe. But Arsenal know that Real Madrid's stance may soften as the transfer window drags on and if they have to offload or lower their demands then it is likely to be later in the window. It would be a gamble as they have already seen another top target, Athletic Bilbao' Nico Williams, get lined up for a move to Barcelona. But there is a genuine interest in Rodrygo and it now remains to be seen whether they can progress on it and get encouragement - or have to look elsewhere. The left winger, though, remains a top priority. Arsenal will also have to balance the potential cost of a top left winger with the price of a new No9 with RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko emerging as the favoured target. They have courted Sesko for more than 18 months, they nearly got him last summer and have put in groundwork to land the Slovenian striker. But RB Leipzig have been holding firm on a price in excess of £70m while Berta is also known for chasing multiple targets and then proceeding with the best deal. That is why Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyökeres is still a strong possibility and Aston Villa 's Ollie Watkins is also on the radar because Arsenal want to strengthen in several positions and cannot blow all their money on one target. They have already lined up a £51m move for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi and that deal will be confirmed and announced imminently. Berta has also been looking at the defence and the chance to shake it up and improve the back-up options. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Liverpool get boost in Guehi transfer chase with Crystal Palace talks imminent
Liverpool have quickly emerged as favourites in the race to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace this summer and the Premier League champions could now be in a position to act Liverpool are in a position to ramp up their interest in Marc Guehi after agreeing a £35million deal to sell their homegrown defender, Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. The Reds have emerged as serious contenders in the race for Guehi's signature with the 24-year-old now approaching the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park. But there are other clubs lurking, too, including Arsenal and Newcastle, who saw substantial bids for the England star rejected last summer. It was outlined earlier this week that Liverpool were unlikely to pursue anything with Guehi until a deal for Quansah was done. And following a prompt resolution to negotiations with Leverkusen over a third transfer between the two clubs this summer, the Premier League champions are now, theoretically, in a position to make their move for Guehi. Mirror Football revealed on Friday that Crystal Palace are braced for an imminent approach for their star defender from their domestic rivals. But it's understood that Liverpool will not be held to ransom over a price for Guehi, who was valued in excess of £60million by the FA Cup holders last summer when Newcastle came calling. The Reds have already spent well over £100m this summer after completing deals for Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, who could end up costing a British record £116m. And with a further £40m swoop mooted for Milos Kerkez, the Bournemouth left-back, it's easy to see why Liverpool will not commit to big money for a player who could be available for free next summer. Join the debate! Would Guehi be a good signing for Liverpool? Let us know here It remains to be seen if Palace will play hardball and risk losing Guehi for nothing in 12 months time, particularly with the level of interest in him. Guehi is said to be keen on the idea of swapping Selhurst Park to Anfield but is also willing to see out the final year of his contract in south London if the move he desires fails to materialises over the coming weeks. Palace are already in discussions over a deal for Sporting Lisbon's highly-rated defender, Ousmane Diomande, who would, in theory, be Guehi's replacement should he be sold.
