Algeria call up Mahious, Meziane in star-studded provisional squad for CHAN
Algeria's home-based national team coach, Madjid Bougherra, has named a provisional 28-man squad as preparations begin in earnest for the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN). The selected players—drawn exclusively from the domestic league—are set to report to the National Technical Centre in Sidi Moussa on Sunday, 20 July, for a pivotal training camp that will shape the final squad for the tournament in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The squad is headlined by CHAN 2022 top scorer Aymen Mahious and features a strong representation from Algerian league champions MC Alger and runners-up CR Belouizdad, with six players each. USM Alger follows with four call-ups, while JS Kabylie and CS Constantine contribute three players apiece. The rest of the squad is rounded out by representatives from ASO Chlef, ES Sétif, and Paradou AC. This preliminary list is expected to undergo minor adjustments based on player performances during the camp and upcoming friendly matches. Algeria will be based in Group C at CHAN 2024, one of the most competitive groups, facing off against Uganda, South Africa, Guinea, and Niger. 2025 #LesVerts | #123VivaLAlgérie🇩🇿 — Équipe d'Algérie de football (@LesVerts) July 19, 2025 As part of their build-up, the Desert Foxes A' will play two high-profile friendlies —offering a final opportunity for players to stake their claim before the continental showdown begins on August 2. With tactical preparations set to intensify, competition for places in the final squad promises to be fierce. But for now, this group of 28 forms the backbone of Algeria's quest for CHAN glory. Rulani explains MC Alger technical team
'The club insists on a couple of people, which is excellent,' Mokwena told Metro FM. New MC Alger head coach Rulani Mokwena be joined by a mixture of his own choice of staff and some that the club want him to use, as he takes up his latest role on the African continent. ALSO READ: Williams questions Nkota's Pirates to Saudi switch Mokwena left Wydad Casablanca towards the end of last season, and while he was heavily linked with a move back to Orlando Pirates, the 38 year-old has chosen to remain in North Africa. Rulani – 'The club insists' 'The club insists on a couple of people, which is excellent. That still breeds familiarity … there is still a little bit of … technical staff that knows how to win and do well in the Champions League with this group,' Mokena told Andile Ncube on Metro FM. Mokwena will be joined at MC Alger by his former colleague at Mamelodi Sundowns, goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson. 'I've got coach Wendell [Robinson] because he also speaks a goalkeeping language and if we retain a goalkeeping coach maybe the relationship there can be established a little bit quicker.' Former Togo and AS Vita assistant coach Enzo Donis will also join up with Mokwena in Algeria. 'Then, of course I have an assistant coach that's worked with AS Vita, who is from Belgium and he's coming on. He's agreed to leave his job with the Togo national team, and so he's excited by the project. 'He also allows me to have someone of a hybrid assistant because he's got a bit of work and expertise in setpieces.' Mahlangu on board Mokwena also confirmed he will be joined by conditioning coach Sbu Mahlangu, who worked with him at Sundowns and Wydad. The club will no doubt hope that Mokwena's experience of Champions League football can help them break that particular hoodoo.

Mokwena Takes Charge of Algerian Side
Former Wydad AC Rhulani Mokwena has been appointed head coach of Algerian outfit MC Alger, replacing Tunisian Khaled Ben Yahia. The club confirmed the South African's arrival on their Facebook page last night. Mokwena, 38, endured a difficult spell with Wydad following his move from Mamelodi Sundowns, finishing the season trophyless. Under his tenure, Wydad played 35 matches, registering 11 wins, 12 draws, and four defeats. He succeeded Ben Yahia, who led Mc Alger to a domestic double last season after winning the Algerian Ligue 1 title with 58 points and the Algerian Super Cup. The club also reached the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League under his guidance. MC Alger will compete in the CAF Champions League this season, and the expectations are high for Mokwena to lead the team to an honourable performance. This move was largely welcomed by the club's supporters: 'Good luck to him in coaching one of the pillars of Algeria's clubs. I hope Algerian clubs return to honouring us and shining on the African continent,' one user wrote on Facebook. Another added: 'A great coach with great competence. He is a coach with strong ideas in the world of football.' Details of Mokwena's contract have not yet been disclosed. Tags: AlgeriaMC AlgerRhulani MokwenaSouth Africa

His new club, MC Alger, clinched their ninth league title last season, securing their spot as automatic qualifiers for Africa's prestigious club competition. The 38-year-old South African tactician has signed a two-year contract, marking a new chapter in his coaching career. MC Alger announced Mokwena's appointment on their official social media channels, stating: 'Rulani Mokwena is the new coach of the dean of the Algerian clubs. Rulani Mokwena! Welcome to Mouloudia.' His arrival in Algiers comes on the heels of the departure of Tunisian coach Khaled Ben Yahia, who had a short-term contract with the club that ended last season. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Mokwena previously coached at Wydad AC in Morocco after a successful spell with South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns, where he established himself as an innovative coach. His tactical versatility, especially his preferred 3-4-3 formation, earned him a reputation for being a coach who promoted attacking play. While at Wydad, Mokwena completed 17 matches, achieving seven wins, six draws, and four losses. However, a lack of alignment on club objectives led to an amicable parting of ways in May 2025, leaving Mokwena in high demand across Africa. He attracted interest from several clubs, including Pyramids FC and Zamalek SC in Egypt, as well as teams from South Africa and the Gulf region. His consistent commitment to maintaining his link with CAF Champions League contenders ultimately led him to choose MC Alger over other offers. In its 103-year history, MC Alger has competed nine times in the Champions League and made history by winning the title in their 1976 debut. The club aims to build on their recent successes, having reached the quarter-finals of the last CAF Champions League edition before being narrowly defeated by Orlando Pirates, a match imbued with added significance for Mokwena, given his ties to the South African side. His coaching journey aligns perfectly with the club's ambitions, as they seek to dominate domestically and make an impact on the continental stage. MC Alger's decision reflects their commitment to not only reclaim domestic titles but also improve their standing in Africa while competing against formidable opponents. Mokwena now faces the challenge of eclipsing rivals like Sead Ramovic of CR Belouizdad and Josef Zinnbauer of JS Kabylie, making the upcoming season in Algeria particularly competitive. As Mokwena settles into his new role, he will focus on leveraging his tactical insight and experience to strengthen the squad for both national and international aspirations. His appointment will bolster MC Alger's profile while solidifying his status as one of African football's most promising coaching talents. He becomes the first South African to coach in the Algerian Premier League, and at the age of 38, Mokwena will be the youngest coach in the CAF Champions League next season.

Mokwena to reignite rivalry with Ramović after joining MC Alger
The rivalry between two former Premier Soccer League coaches Rulani Mokwena and Sead Ramović is set to be reignited in Algeria in the 2025-26 season. This is after Mokwena joined reigning Algerian Ligue 1 champions Mouludia Club Alger, or MC Alger, late on Sunday night. Ramović is coach of CR Belouizdad, where former Cape Town City striker Khanyisa Mayo plies his trade. Mokwena and Ramović traded a series of verbal blows when they coached Mamelodi Sundowns and TS Galaxy respectively last year. 'Rulani Mokwena, new coach for the dean of Algerian clubs,' Alger's statement read, also posting on Facebook: 'Welcome to Mouloudia'. In one press conferences last year, German-Bosnian coach Ramović mockingly called Mokwena 'Mr Sunshine'. The former Wyada Casablanca tactician fired back by saying Ramović was seeking attention.
