Ken Muir Awards recognise ‘overlooked' student achievements

Powering Futures established the Ken Muir Awards as part of the culmination of its national Schools Programme. Delivered as a SCQF Level 6 certified course, the Schools Programme tasks students with solving a real-world challenge set for them by local business leaders.
More than 1,000 pupils from 86 schools in Scotland participated in the Schools Programme in 2024-2025, the fourth year of the programme.
Although every participant also leaves with a qualification, a spokesperson for Powering Futures said that the new Ken Muir Award is meant to give special attention to pupils who exhibited 'less measurable, but deeply meaningful outcomes,' such as increased confidence, teamwork skills, and planning for their lives after school.
An award was given to one pupil from each participating school. Recipients were nominated by their teachers in recognition of individual growth during the challenge.
Many calls for reforming the Scottish education system and independent studies into qualifications, exams and the curriculum have emphasised the need to move away from traditional results-based education and instead prioritise skills and other achievements that might translate directly into the workplace.
Professor Louise Hayward's 2023 Independent Review of Qualifications and Assessment recommended significant changes to the exam diet and the creation of a new diploma reflecting wider student achievements.
Prof Muir's 2022 report, Putting Learners at the Centre, focussed on reforms to the qualifications system as part of a broader cultural shift in education that gave less weight to high-stakes exams and more focus on student and teacher voices.

Prof Muir said that the new award in his name and the Powering Futures Schools Programme are both 'symbolic' of the change he wants to see in Scottish education.
'We need a culture shift in Scotland's education system. Of course, grades are important - but so is working hard, reflecting on progress, and growing as a person.
'These Awards are symbolic of this shift. They celebrate personal development, resilience, communication, and teamwork. These are all critical attributes that help young people thrive in life and in work.'
He added that giving students, teachers, and employers input into the system is critical.
'Innovation in education doesn't come from the top down. It comes from those on the ground who genuinely want to see young people achieve in every sense of the word. Powering Futures is one such innovation, and it's helping us reimagine what success looks like in Scottish schools.'

Over the course of the Schools Programme, students have the chance to work directly with the business leaders who set the challenges and build relationships, which Powering Futures co-founder Jennifer Tempany said provide opportunities for students when they leave school.
'The Powering Futures Schools Programme is equipping the next generation with the skills and mindset to thrive in the jobs of the future.
'These Awards highlight the often-overlooked achievements that sit beyond academic results, but which can inspire confidence and purpose in young people as they go into the world of work.
'We are proud to play our part in helping young people see their potential, and congratulate every recipient for their well-earned achievement.'
The inaugural Ken Muir Awards were hosted by SSEN Transmission in Perth.
Nicky Gadsden, SSEN's Early Career Attraction and Engagement Lead, said the awards 'help signal a brighter, more sustainable future powered by their vision and ambition.'
'We're thrilled to celebrate the recipients of this year's Ken Muir Award - young people whose drive and innovation are already setting them up to make waves in their future careers, wherever it takes them.'

Like many households across Scotland with teenagers, last week our home saw a flurry of excitement over exam results. The outcome of the Nationals 4 and 5, Highers and Advanced Highers arrived through the post or on text messages, being greeted either with joy or dismay. It is customary for politicians at these times to congratulate all the young people who have done so well, and the teachers who guided them to what are, hopefully, good outcomes and better opportunities for their lives ahead. However, it is also necessary to take a cool, hard look at what exactly these results tell us. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad There was certainly an attempt to put a positive spin on the overall numbers by the SNP Education Secretary, Jenny Gilruth, who highlighted that the number of pupils achieving an A-C grade across all levels has increased compared to last year. Whether this tells us much in itself is debatable. Pass grades will always vary, due to a variety of factors, not least the relative difficulty of the exam papers. Just because the pass rates increase doesn't necessarily mean that either pupils or schools are performing better, and of course the converse is equally true. I can well remember a recent conversation with a retired maths teacher who lamented the fact that, in her opinion, Higher maths exam papers were easier than a generation ago, and therefore better pass rates were only to be expected. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Others will be better qualified than me to comment on the accuracy of that assessment, but it certainly appears to be a common view amongst those who have been within the teaching profession over a long period. In assessing the overall impact of rising pass rates, we also need to look at the subjects being chosen by pupils. PE is now the third most popular subject being taken at Higher. In the experience of my youngsters and their peers, this is because they believe that PE is a subject which is easier to pass than, say, maths, chemistry or physics. We also know that more children now choose a PE Higher than one in all modern languages put together, which surely must be of concern to the Education Secretary and schools. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Steady decline of Scottish education A better comparison rather than simply looking at year-to-year changes in pass rates is to consider where Scottish education sits in relation to other countries. And here the picture is not so rosy. Outcomes in Scottish education have been in steady decline compared to many other countries, as evidenced by comparative international tests. It is hardly something to celebrate. But our Education Secretary was particularly keen to seize on one figure last week, and that was the reduction in the attainment gap between pupils in most and least deprived communities. For Higher results, this has indeed declined, with the difference in attainment of A grades reducing from 22.1 percentage points last year to 22 in this year. When looking at all passes from A-C at Higher, there was no reduction at all, although for National 5s the reduction was more marked. Those minimal improvements only reflect what has happened over the past 12 months. Look further back, and the story is even less positive. The attainment gap for all Higher passes has actually widened since 2019, when it sat at 16.9 percentage points. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad None of this gives us much confidence that Scottish education is safe in the SNP's hands. And what is most worrying is not Gilruth's attempts to put such a positive spin on the figures, but the fact that, in 2016, the then SNP First Minister Nicola Sturgeon made closing the attainment gap a priority for her government, on which she asked to be judged. In the same year, her then Deputy and Education Secretary, John Swinney, said that he wanted to see the attainment gap 'substantially eliminated' within ten years. That just gives us one year to go with no significant progress having been made. No wonder my Conservative colleague Miles Briggs, who speaks for our party on education, responded by saying: 'No amount of spin from them can avoid the fact that Nicola Sturgeon's promises in relation to the attainment gap lie in tatters.' Young Scots being let down In a week when we read wall-to-wall coverage of Sturgeon's memoirs, there has been a great deal of commentary about her legacy. Yet, on the very topic that she wanted her leadership to be judged on, it has been shown to be a failure. Too many young Scots have been let down by nearly two decades of the SNP in power, and the inability to tackle the significant issues facing Scottish education. None of this is due to a want of resources. Spending per head on Scottish pupils substantially outranks that south of the Border, perhaps by as much as 20 per cent or more, and yet educational outcomes in England are significantly better than here. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It is a reality that the education reforms in England over the same period that the SNP have been in power here, delivered either from Labour or Conservative governments, have driven up standards and improved results. In the meantime, the SNP have preferred a one-size-fits-all approach to Scottish schooling, and have stuck doggedly by the Curriculum for Excellence, which is clearly long past the point it needed to be ditched, or at the very least substantially revised. Young people only get one chance at education. Despite the good work being done in Scottish schools, too many are being failed by an antiquated system that doesn't recognise the challenges of the modern world. Responsibility for that must rest at the door of SNP ministers, chief among them Nicola Sturgeon. That is how we should judge her legacy, not on self-serving memoirs.

A historic lighthouse in Shetland built by the father and brother of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson is up for sale, with an asking price of over £350,000. The iconic lighthouse, on the island of Bressay on the east side of Shetland, has stood for over 160 years. Now, the Shetland Amenity Trust, the local heritage charity which has owned the complex since 1995, is looking for a new custodian for the B-listed landmark. It said was no longer able to look after the building due to rising costs, and made the decision to part with the lighthouse following a 'careful and lengthy' period of consultation with the local community. The lighthouse was built in 1858 by engineers David and Thomas Stevenson, who were the father and brother of writer Robert Louis Stevenson, best known for his classic novel Treasure Island. It served to guide vessels safely through Bressay Sound, the sheltered channel separating Bressay from Lerwick. Although the light was automated in 1987 and is no longer essential to modern navigation, the site remains an important symbol of Shetland's maritime history. In April 2022, the Shetland Amenity Trust invited expressions of interest from community groups and private individuals, exploring a range of potential uses for the lighthouse complex. However, no final agreement was made. The trust said its priority throughout has been to secure a sustainable future for the site - whether through community-led initiatives or private ownership. Shetland Amenity Trust chair Alison Moncrieff said the lighthouse holds a 'special place in Shetland's story'. 'While it's been a difficult decision to part with the building, we believe this is the right moment to invite new energy and investment to help it thrive again,' she said. 'Rising costs and financial pressures mean the Trust is no longer able to care for the lighthouse in the way it deserves, but we are excited by the possibilities that lie ahead. 'We're hopeful that a new owner will bring fresh vision and commitment to restore and reimagine the site, ensuring it can be enjoyed for years to come. 'We are grateful to the Directors of Bressay Development Ltd for their thoughtful work exploring a community-led solution. Although this was not feasible in the end, their dedication shows the deep value placed on the site.' Any restoration or development will require permission from Historic Environment Scotland, and works must use traditional materials and techniques appropriate to the lighthouse's listed status. The property listing on Savills says the lighthouse complex comprises several buildings, including the original lighthouse tower, two former keepers' cottages, a former engine room, and an artist's residence and studio. It said the former keepers' cottages and outbuildings have been adapted to support the Bressay Lighthouse artists' residency, offering accommodation and studio space to visiting artists. It said the east and west cottages were previously in use as holiday lets. Bressay is an island located to the east of Shetland capital town Lerwick, with the ferry crossing taking less than ten minutes. Gaining tens of thousands of views online, the concoction has really divided opinion, with some people branding it 'rank' and others 'lovely'. As an avid Irn-Bru drinker and also a fan of the odd espresso, I knew I just had to give it a go after being sent videos of other people trying it online by multiple friends. I also knew I just had to get my National colleagues involved. The concept is simple, mix an espresso with some Irn-Bru in a glass, but in my over-exuberance, I made the fatal error in adding the soft juice before the coffee, which resulted in a rush of foam shooting all over my boss's desk. Don't waste it With the minor foam mishap behind me, my first impression was that it looked almost like a cola float, which I used to enjoy as a child while visiting beach cafes on the east coast. The bright orange of the Irn-Bru quickly dissolved into the dark brown of the coffee, but left a slight red tinge to the drink once it was fully mixed. It took me a few seconds to register what I was tasting. First the coffee, then the Irn-Bru, and then the coffee again. Once my tastebuds and brain were on the same wavelength, I came to the realisation that I actually quite liked it. In fact, my second gulp of the drink quickly followed as it was almost more-ish. The smell had a strong whiff of coffee, but he sweet bubblegum-esque flavour of the Irn-Bru still managed to pierce through. The espresso seemed to decarbonate the Irn-Bru, probably the explosion of foam to be fair, so it was a much smoother drink than the usually bubbly feeling of the soft drink. As much as I liked it, I was very much in the minority in the office. My colleague, Hamish, who must have refined tastebuds like mine, was also a fan. His verdict was that it was almost like drinking a Guinness. However, Hamish and I were alone in our enjoyment of this could be a new Scottish tradition. (Image: NQ) Both my editors were quick to say 'nope,' not for them, while one of my other colleagues branded it 'rank' along with a scrunched-up face. Marmitey would be the best way to describe it, I don't think it is something you can sit on the fence over, either you are going to love it or hate it. Perhaps some things are just best left separate.
