
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla Education Qualification: A journey from cracking UPSC NDA to MTech from IISc
After completing his schooling at City Montessori School (CMS), Aliganj Campus, in Lucknow, Shubhanshu Shukla was deeply inspired by the Kargil War in 1998. Without letting his parents know the plan, Shukla prepared and applied for the Union Public Service Commission's NDA and cracked the exam. As mentioned on his school's website, Shubhanshu Shukla completed his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at the National Defence Academy in 2005.
He also did flying training at the Indian Air Force Academy, eventually getting commissioned into the fighter stream in 2006. His education journey does not stop at a bachelor's, he went on to pursue MTech in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla's space journey began in 2019 when he was selected for India's Gaganyaan Mission. He underwent intensive training at Russia's Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre, completing it in 2021. Shukla further honed his skills at the Astronaut Training Facility in Bangalore.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has secured the top position in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) Asia Rankings 2025, released on April 23. IISc is ranked 38th in the list. The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2025 reveals Asia's top research universities.
In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, IISc Bengaluru has been placed at the top among the best research institutes. Even under the universities category, IISc topped. For the last three consecutive years, IISc has held the spot under the university category. Additionally, in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2025, IISc secured a spot in the world's top 100 institutions offering computer science.
For the first time, an Indian institution has secured a place (99th rank) among the elite top 100 universities. In the ranking released last year, IISc led Indian universities by achieving a slot in the 251-300 band.

In a significant achievement, Ludhiana boy Rayansh Gupta won two medals—a gold and a silver—at the 18th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO 2025) held in Jining, China. Gupta, a Class 12 student at Sat Paul Mittal School, Dugri, Ludhiana, represented India with distinction. The Union Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, shared the development on its official Facebook page, stating: 'India's Young Scientists Shine at IESO 2025! Medal Tally & Awards: Rayansh Gupta – 1 Gold, 1 Silver & 1 GYM Reporter Award; Bains Charuvrat – 2 Silver, 1 Bronze; Apam Nidhi Pandey – 1 Silver; Pryanshi Ghanghas – 1 Bronze.' The Ministry further noted that the Indian team competed against 31 countries, including the USA, Germany, and Australia. 'Competing against 31 countries, including the USA, Japan, China, Germany, Australia, and others, our young scientists showcased brilliance in individual and group events (ITFI, ESP). Supported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), this achievement highlights India's growing strength in science education, research, and innovation. Heartiest congratulations to Team India and their mentors,' the Ministry wrote. Rayansh's mother, Shiffali Gupta, told The Indian Express: 'After successfully clearing Round 1 and Round 2 of the Earth Science Olympiad, Rayansh was selected as one of four students to represent India on the international stage in China. Before their departure, the team underwent a week-long training camp in Chennai. In a moment of great pride for us, Rayansh was appointed captain of the Indian team and had the honor of holding the national flag at the final round.' 'We are delighted to share that Rayansh Gupta has brought immense pride to our school by representing India at the 18th International Earth Science Olympiad held in China. High standards in manufacturing vital for nation's growth, says BIS official
Manufacturing products with the highest standards is key to national development, said Meenakshi Ganesan, Deputy Director General (South), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), while inaugurating a Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on 'Standardisation and Conformity Assessment' at AU College of Engineering on Tuesday. She said standards strengthen institutions and systems, and the three-day FDP would give faculty exposure to Indian and international benchmarks. BIS experts will cover testing, inspection and certification. She noted that AU, which signed an MoU with BIS in 2023, has since undertaken joint programmes and research, and appreciated the faculty for nurturing talent. AU Vice-Chancellor G.P. Raja Sekhar announced plans to introduce a course on standardisation and conformity assessment, besides expanding BIS student chapters already active in three departments. Principal G. Sasibhushana Rao termed the programme significant in the centenary year of the college. FDP coordinator C.N.V. Satyanarayana Reddy said a dedicated section with BIS publications has been set up in the library, and over 120 participants have applied. BIS scientist M.A.J. Vinod and others also spoke.

LS adjourned for the day amid Opposition uproar over Bihar SIR
New Delhi, Aug 19 (UNI) Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day after Opposition members today created a ruckus over Special Intensive revision (SIR) of electoral roll in Bihar. When the presiding officer Dilip Saikia resumed the House proceedings at 4 PM after three adjournments, the Opposition members again entered the well of the House and shouted slogans. Amid the ruckus, the House also passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, by voice vote, without discussion. Earlier, presiding officer Krishna Prasad Tenneti resumed the session at 2 pm following two earlier adjournments, but Opposition members soon were on their feet raising slogans and disrupting the House. They entered the well of the House with placards and shouted slogans. Despite the disruption, the presiding officer tried to carry on with the proceedings. He called BJP MP Nishikant Dubey to continue the special discussion started the previous day on the first Indian abroad International Space Station. Amid the uproar, Dubey spoke and criticised the Congress party, accusing it of not respecting scientists and avoiding the discussion. He said, 'Parliament is holding a discussion to honour space scientists, but Congress is evading it because it has harmed the country's space research organization, ISRO.' Dubey also mentioned a 2012 report alleging a Rs 2 lakh crore loss to the government and accused Congress of neglecting scientists and research institutions. The presiding officer requested Dubey to pause the discussion and appealed to the protesting Opposition members to maintain order, but as no one paid heed to his requests, he adjourned the House until 4 pm. Earlier, The House reassembled at noon, and the presiding officer Krishna Prasad Tenneti called for the papers to be laid on the table of the House. Meanwhile, commotion by the Opposition members over Bihar SIR continued. While appealing to the agitating members to let the House function, Tenneti said, "I request all of you to kindly take your seat. We will take the proceedings further. I want to listen to you but not like this. Please go back to your chairs and then present, I will give you an opportunity to speak but not like this". When the sloganeering continued, the Chair adjourned the House till 2 pm. Earlier too, the Lok Sabha witnessed unruly scene following which Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House till 12 noon.
