Fitch lowers EM10 growth to 3.9%, China drives revision

Fibre2Fashion7 days ago

The GDP-weighted average potential growth forecast for ten key emerging markets (EMs) has been revised down to 3.9 per cent from 4.0 per cent, Fitch Ratings said in its latest Global Economic Outlook.
Fitch Ratings has cut the GDP-weighted average potential growth for 10 key EMs to 3.9 per cent from 4.0 per cent, mainly due to China's downgrade to 4.3 per cent. Mexico, Indonesia, and Korea also saw downward revisions, while India, Brazil, Russia, and Poland received upgrades. India's pandemic scarring was reduced to 5.4 per cent. South Africa and Turkiye estimates remain unchanged.
The slight reduction is primarily due to a downgrade in China's growth potential, now estimated at 4.3 per cent—down from 4.6 per cent projected in the 2023 edition. The revision for China had been signalled earlier in a special report released in November 2024.
Fitch also downgraded supply-side potential growth estimates for Mexico (from 2.0 per cent to 1.8 per cent), Indonesia (from 4.9 per cent to 4.7 per cent), and Korea (from 2.1 per cent to 1.9 per cent).
However, these reductions were balanced by upward revisions in four economies—India, Brazil, Russia, and Poland. India's potential growth has been revised upwards to 6.4 per cent from 6.2 per cent, supported by stronger-than-expected post-pandemic recovery and a reduced cumulative negative 'level shock' to its GDP, the rating agency said in a release.
Fitch now estimates India's scarring impact from the pandemic at a total of 5.4 per cent (2.7 per cent in each of 2020 and 2021), down from the previous estimate of 7 per cent.
Brazil's potential growth has been raised to 2.0 per cent from 1.7 per cent, while Russia sees a notable increase to 1.2 per cent from 0.8 per cent. Poland's projection improves slightly to 3.2 per cent, up from 3.0 per cent, due to a stronger contribution from capital deepening.
On an unweighted basis, the average potential growth across the EM10 now stands at 3.1 per cent. Meanwhile, potential growth estimates for South Africa and Turkiye remain unchanged at 1.0 per cent and 4.1 per cent, respectively.
Fitch's estimates continue to factor in the pandemic-related output losses in 2020 and 2021 for Mexico, South Africa, India, and Indonesia. While these 'level shocks' remain, India's robust economic rebound has prompted a reassessment of its long-term scarring, indicating greater resilience in the aftermath of COVID-19. Konkan Railway to explore running Ro-Ro train to ferry cars if adequate demand

The Konkan Railway will explore the possibility of running a special roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) train service for transporting cars during the upcoming Ganapti festival, if there is sufficient public demand, a top official said. It will be possible to operate such a service if there are at least 40 cars to be transported at a time, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited's Chairman and Managing Director Santosh Kumar Jha told reporters at the KRCL headquarters at Belapur in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday. Asked why the KR does not transport passenger cars by its pioneering Ro-Ro services during the Ganpati festival, Jha said they will have to make changes for ferrying cars on wagons. The Konkan Railway's Ro-Ro service, which allows vehicles to be transported along with their drivers, has traditionally been used for trucks. "I promise you that this time in Ganpati I will announce a special train (Ro-Ro)," Jha said. The official said he did not know people would want to transport their expensive cars 750 km away. It takes 24 to 26 hours to reach Mangaluru (in Karnataka) by Ro-Ro from here and for that one has to buy a second class ticket from the driver. Highlighting that KR is not a loss-making corporation, Jha said it generated a net profit of ₹301 crore in 2023-24. As per unpublished reports, the corporation is expected to register a profit of ₹140-150 crore in the last financial year. "The Konkan Railway was always in profit, barring two years of COVID-19," Jha said, adding the KR is generating profits from the operations and execution of projects. The corporation got projects valued at ₹3,150 crore through tendering processes in the last 15 months and is already executing works of ₹4,087 crore, the official said. "About ₹7,200 crore of work orders are already in my hand and this year, we have targeted to get ₹15,000 crore of orders. I have full faith that we will achieve this target," Jha said. The KR has planned to spend ₹125 crore for various passengers amenities, including platform extension, construction of FOBs (foot overbridges) and providing retiring rooms, at railway stations in the next three years, he said. The Public Works Department of Maharashtra has spent ₹99 crore for the development of 11 stations on the KR network. Now, the MIDC is spending ₹39 crore on Ratnagiri station alone for providing facilities, he said. "You will see a full facelift of the Ratnagiri station before this year-end," the official said. Also, the KR has sent a proposal to the Railway Board for the restoration of eight halts which were discontinued during the COVID-19 time, he said. The official further said the entire Konkan Railway route is currently single line, except for a 47-km-long section, and they have proposed patch doubling works, estimated to cost ₹5,100 crores, but these works need ministerial help. At present, the Konkan Railway has about ₹2,750 crore loan to repay and the corporation has planned to clear ₹600 crore dues of it during this financial year, he said. Jha also said they have proposed alternatives for Pernem and Old Goa tunnel construction and the work has received an in-principle approval, but function allocation is awaited. The tunnels are not unstable, he added.

AMC Theatres to run even more ads before movies play after holding out for years amid financial struggles

AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. has agreed to run more advertising in its theaters, ending its yearslong opposition to commercials that come right before each movie. The largest US theater chain, AMC reached an agreement with National CineMedia Inc. to run the spots, according to a statement Tuesday. National CineMedia owns and operates an ad network in major theater chains, including AMC, Cinemark Holdings Inc. and Regal Cinemas. Starting July 1, AMC theaters will feature a 'platinum spot' that's shown on screens right before the start of a film. The theater chain, which has struggled financially, will get a cut of the ad sales, receiving what it described as 'vital revenue.' Shares of National CineMedia rose 4.8% to $5.29 at the close in New York. AMC was down 3.2% to $3.33. Almost six years ago, AMC was the lone holdout among major theater chains when National CineMedia first introduced the new ad spot, predicting at the time that 'US moviegoers would react quite negatively.' 'While AMC was initially reluctant to bring this to our theaters, our competitors have fully participated for more than five years without any direct impact to their attendance,' the company said in an email Tuesday. Officials with National CineMedia said they had no immediate comment. Movie fans have long been accustomed to stretches of ads that run before the lights go down and the coming attractions start to roll. In 2019, National CineMedia introduced an ad that comes during the trailers, with its CEO Tom Lesinksi telling analysts it would be 'one of the most attractive spots in media.' Lesinski said at the time that National CineMedia was in talks with AMC about introducing the ad spot, but AMC countered that the companies weren't in discussions and 'didn't envision entering into such an arrangement with NCM anytime in the foreseeable future.' On its website, AMC advises fans 'there are approximately 20 minutes of preshow material, including trailers, between the published showtime and the start of the feature film.' In its first quarter financial report last month, AMC said the industry experienced the worst start to a year since 1996, excluding the COVID-19 health crisis. The box office has bounced back in recent weeks thanks to a record performance during the Memorial Day weekend. To stoke midweek sales, AMC is offering 50% off regular ticket prices on Wednesdays starting July 9.
