Dezianna Patmon's 2nd straight walk-off hit helps Oregon beat Liberty 3-2 in 8 innings in Game 1
No. 16 seed Oregon can clinch a berth in the Women's College World Series with a win in Game 2 on Saturday.
Staci Chambers pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless one-hit relief for the Ducks.
Kendre Luschar led off the eighth with a single, stole second base and then advanced to third when Stefini Ma'ake flied out. Paige Sinicki walked and stole second to set up Patmon's second consecutive walk-off, after her three-run home run against Stanford lifted the Ducks in the clinching game at the Eugene Regional.
Elena Escobar pitched a complete game for Liberty , allowing three runs — one earned — on seven hits with five walks over 7 1/3 innings.
KK Madrey singled and then Paige Doerr followed with an RBI single to cut Liberty's deficit to 2-1 in the fourth.
Doerr led off the sixth with a single and scored on a two-out single by Alexia Carrasquillo — on the eighth pitch of the at-bat — to make it 2-2.
Ayanna Shaw reached on an error with one out in the third and Kai Luschar followed with an RBI triple. Ma'ake added a two-out RBI single that made it 2-0.

Lynx aim to remain perfect against Liberty in season series
While the Minnesota Lynx are waiting for Napheesa Collier to fully recover from a lingering ankle injury, they continue to notch victories and pad their lead atop the WNBA standings. HT Image The Lynx attempt to extend their winning streak to seven games Tuesday night when they visit the New York Liberty for the teams' fourth matchup in three weeks. The game is another rematch of last season's WNBA Finals, won by the Liberty in five games. The Lynx (28-5) hold a 3-0 advantage between the teams this season heading into the finale of the season series. Collier scored 30 points in the first meeting between the teams when the Lynx earned a 100-93 victory on July 30 and was injured three days later in a game at Las Vegas. Minnesota's Courtney Williams, Alanna Smith and Kayla McBride have stepped up in the absence of the WNBA's top scorer at 23.5 points per game. The Lynx earned an 86-80 home win over the Liberty on Saturday when Williams scored 26 points. McBride finished with 18 points in Minnesota's 83-71 win at New York on Aug. 10. "To do this, in the stretch of games (when) we're playing against really good teams, I'm super proud of us," said Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve, whose team has added victories over the Aces, Seattle Storm and Washington Mystics to the three against the Liberty. New York (21-13) is 4-6 since losing Breanna Stewart with a bone bruise in her right knee on July 26. The Liberty split the first six games of Stewart's absence but return home with three losses in their past four games, including Saturday when the Lynx attempted 33 free throws and New York reached the foul line eight times. Sabrina Ionescu led the Liberty in scoring four times in the first six games after Stewart was forced out early in their 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks. Ionescu was held to 13 points Saturday and is shooting 32.9 percent (26-of-79) over her past six games and was 5-of-16 from the floor Sunday. Jonquel Jones led the Liberty with 17 on Saturday but combined with Ionsecu for just one point in the fourth quarter at Minnesota. Jones did not take a shot in more than seven minutes of the final quarter. "We got to just continue to get better every single game and I think we've done that," Ionescu said. "It's been a long month on the road and for us to get back home in front of our crowd and we owe them from the last game that we played the Lynx at home." --Field Level Media

Liberty Flames and coach Jamey Chadwell eager to bounce back in Conference USA
The Liberty Flames find themselves in a familiar position favored to win the Conference USA title with added motivation of bouncing back from a disappointing 2024. HT Image Coach Jamey Chadwell and his Flames were favored a year ago only to miss the title game. They also finished on a two-game skid capped by a loss in the Bahamas Bowl. 'Maybe a bad taste in the mouth about how we finished thinking that we could've had a better season than we had last year, and I think the guys returning knew that and they knew why we didn't and they're focused on making sure we don't beat ourselves moving forward,' Chadwell said. Liberty had a game canceled by Hurricane Helene in September, then stumbled to a 5-3 mark in league play and 8-4 overall. It was a big drop from 2023 when Liberty went undefeated in winning the C-USA championship and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl in Chadwell's first season. Now Chadwell is managing the transfer portal that saw quarterback Kaidon Salter go to Colorado. Ethan Vasko is among 13 portal additions, and the quarterback threw for 2,110 yards and 14 touchdowns last season at Coastal Carolina. Vasko also ran for 447 yards and five more scores. Chadwell said the challenge now in Conference USA is knowing which teams got 'plucked' through the portal and who's actually back. He sees his fellow coaches now having to build teams each season rather than programs. 'We lost a bunch of guys just like everybody else, but I do think we have a good nucleus,' Chadwell said. 'I think we have a chance to have a really, really good year if we can stay together and stay connected.' Liberty also will be relying on Vaughn Blue and JuJu Gray to keep an offense clicking after ranking fourth nationally last season averaging 250.7 yards rushing per game. Western Kentucky also is a heavy favorite after the Hilltoppers lost in the title game last December. Defending C-USA champ Jacksonville State will try to defend its league title with a first-year head coach. Louisiana Tech is expected to bounce back after a 5-8 season as well. Western Kentucky went back to the portal for a quarterback with Maverick McIvor transferring from Abilene Christian. McIvor threw for 3,847 yards and 30 touchdowns with seven interceptions. McIvor should be comfortable with offensive coordinator Rick Bowie, brought along for the same job. Other portal additions include running back George Hart III and a pair of wide receivers in K.D. Hutchinson and Noah Meyers. Jacksonville State has Charles Kelly in his first season as a first-time head coach replacing Rich Rodriguez, who went to West Virginia. Kelly was hired away from Auburn where he had been co-defensive coordinator to return to where he started his coaching career at Jacksonville State in 1994. The Gamecocks hope to ease Kelly's transition with the addition of running back Cam Cook, who transferred from TCU after scoring nine TDs in 2024. The offensive coordinator is back at Louisiana Tech where he was coordinator between 2010 and 2012. He's also had a stint in the same role at Middle Tennessee for six seasons before retiring in January 2021. Louisiana Tech already has quarterback Evan Bullock returning after throwing for 2,104 yards with 14 TDs and only three interceptions. The last time Franklin was the Bulldogs' offensive coordinator, Louisiana Tech led FBS scoring 51.5 points and piling up 577.9 yards per game. Delaware and Missouri State are in the second year transitioning from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision. That means they're not eligible for bowl games. But if the record is worthy, they each could become eligible if not enough FBS teams are available to fill the slots. The season starts Aug. 23 when Sam Houston visits Western Kentucky. C-USA has packed its schedule with some heavyweight games starting with Kennesaw State visiting Wake Forest on Aug. 29 and Missouri State at Southern California on Aug. 30. Sept. 6 is a big day for C-USA with FIU at Penn State, Kennesaw State at Indiana, Delaware going to Colorado, Middle Tennessee playing at Wisconsin and Louisiana Tech visiting LSU. UTEP goes to Texas on Sept. 13, and Western Kentucky visits LSU on Nov. 22 before the season finale at Jacksonville State. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Mason McTavish contract talks with Pat Verbeek: Long Term or Bridge?
Mason McTavish contract talks with Pat Verbeek (Image Via Twitter) With training camp nearing, the Ducks still have one thing to check off their winter offseason to-do list, and that is to sign 22-year-old center Mason McTavish. The third overall pick in 2021, McTavish has become an integral part of Anaheim's future. However, a stalemate has occurred in negotiations, with McTavish wanting a long-term deal while Verbeek would prefer a short-term bridge contract. The clock is ticking, and both sides are aware that the outcome could affect how the Ducks move forward, both in the short and long term. Pat Verbeek 's experience in dealing consistently with RFA negotiations Pat Verbeek has earned a league-wide reputation in terms of tough RFA negotiations. "Part of my philosophy is I like to do bridge deals with players," Verbeek said earlier this year. 'It allows the players two things. It allows them to have no pressure to grow and get better before they have the long-term contract.' This mirrors the former contract battles of Zegras and Drysdale, in which the two agreements happened to be strung out into training camp in 2023-the delay that gave rise to early-season struggles and injuries. Mason McTavish: Increasing worth, long-term ambition Reports are saying McTavish's camp is aiming for a longer-term deal with a higher average annual value. 'Pat Verbeek wants a bridge deal, (a) two to three-year deal. McTavish wants a longer deal; he wants more AAV than they're offering,' said Jimmy Murphy. Should The Habs Pay This Price For Mason McTavish? | The Sick Podcast with Tony Marinaro Aug 7 2025 McTavish's case has been reinforced by steady development: 43 points in his rookie year, 42 in just 64 games during his sophomore year, and 52 last year, all the while with hardly any offensive support from Anaheim. Simultaneously, his defensive play and playmaking have changed to make him a potent two-way player. Avoiding a costly repeat Friedman spoke of Anaheim's official line: 'If you want the money, you're going to have to earn it.' Still, the risk goes with delaying discussions into training camp, just as happened with Zegras and Drysdale. With the installation of Joel Quenneville as head coach, McTavish could break out if he signs and hits the ground running right away.
