Teachers from Salford primary school strike 'over violent pupils'
Jac Casson, NASUWT national executive member for Greater Manchester, said staff and other pupils were "at risk".She said: "No school can guarantee staff will not be assaulted but the risk can be managed - that has not been done this year."Ms Casson said the school's new leadership had not applied policies to deal with verbal and physical abuse and, along with the governors, had ignored staff concerns.She added: "Essentially it has not been dealt with and it wasn't until our members had been balloted that the school responded with risk assessments of particular students."

Ms Casson said staff had been regularly sworn at, punched, kicked and pushed with classrooms trashed, causing the rest of the pupils to be put into "lockdown" for their own protection.Previously, the school had been described as "stable and happy" but the union blamed a change in leadership and management.Ms Casson said: "We had suspended our strike plans but the governors have not worked with us and we decided to put our vote into action after an incident where three people were injured by the same student."Salford Council said: "Teams from across the council are continuing to work closely with colleagues from the NASUWT union, the school leadership team, and governors as we look to address the concerns that have been raised and also seek a resolution to the strike action."

Police will not endorse activities of volunteer ‘force' launching patrols
A police force said it will not endorse the activities of volunteers in Bournemouth who have set up a uniformed 'force' to patrol the streets, adding a review of their vetting processes highlighted 'areas of significant concern'. Safeguard Force, whose volunteers will wear branded bibs, said it aims to create 'safer, more supportive communities by providing visible, compassionate and non-confrontational patrols' which were set to start on August 11. The move follows two high-profile murder cases in the town as well as the local police force having to introduce dispersal powers on the seafront after a disturbance involving a 'large group of people' on June 30 which left a teenage girl and two officers injured. Dorset Police said a multi-agency meeting was held with Safeguard Force on Friday and 'a review of their vetting processes has highlighted areas of significant concern'. Assistant Chief Constable Mark Callaghan, of Dorset Police, said: 'Following a multi-agency meeting on Friday 15 August 2025, which involved Dorset Police, other emergency services, the local authority and representatives of Safeguard Force, we will not be endorsing their activities. 'We have engaged with the group extensively and a review of their vetting processes has highlighted areas of significant concern. The organisers have been unable to provide reassurance that this group has sufficient safeguards in place to ensure volunteers are adequately vetted, trained, and equipped to undertake high-visibility patrols in the community. 'Safeguard Force's policies provided to police contain insufficient details in relation to the use of body-worn cameras, publishing of photographs of members of the public, administration and recording of any force used or first aid provided and limited evidence of any training provided. 'We welcome the responsible use of volunteers, who wish to carry out public service and there are many ways in which this can be facilitated in a safe way, including becoming a Special Constable, joining the street pastor programme, or via established Watch schemes. 'All these initiatives have appropriate policies and processes in place, particularly around the vetting of individuals and safeguarding of vulnerable people. 'Dorset Police continues to carry out high-visibility patrols, with 289 foot patrols taking place in the past seven days throughout Bournemouth town centre, gardens and seafront. 'This resulted in arrests being made and dispersal notices being issued, stop searches for drugs or weapons, anti-social behaviour incidents attended, intelligence gathered and almost 1,200 conversations with members of the public and 131 businesses and local premises visited. 'We would encourage members of the public to speak to our officers and report incidents and crimes directly to us so we're able to effectively respond and investigate.' In March, Nasen Saadi was jailed for life to serve a minimum of 39 years at Winchester Crown Court for the murder of Amie Gray and attempted murder of Leanne Miles on Bournemouth beach on May 24 2024. And in January 2023, Afghan asylum seeker Lawangeen Abdulrahimzai was jailed for life to serve a minimum of 29 years at Salisbury Crown Court for the murder of 21-year-old Thomas Roberts outside a Subway takeaway shop in Bournemouth in March 2022.

Why a sonic boom was heard in parts of England
A sonic boom was heard across parts of Essex, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Kent, and London on Friday morning. The loud bang was caused by two RAF Typhoon fighter jets that were scrambled from RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire. The jets were launched to intercept a San Marino-registered private aircraft that had lost contact with air traffic control. The civilian aircraft was safely escorted to Stansted Airport, where communications were re-established. Essex Police confirmed that officers on the ground found nothing of concern after the aircraft landed.

BRITISH taxpayers who work all hours to make ends meet have every reason to feel angered by a TikTok video posted last week by Parwiz Hanifyar. He is the Afghan migrant who gloated about his journey to Britain and his stay at a four-star hotel. 3 They have even more reason to be disgusted by a video clip which has subsequently emerged of him appearing to advise men who want to kill their estranged wives to drink heavily first, in the belief that it will lessen their sentence. But in one sense he has done us all a favour. He has destroyed once and for all the pretence that all migrants who come to our shores to seek asylum are 'desperate' and fleeing for their lives. That is what we are told continuously by refugee charities and advocacy groups: That they are deeply traumatised people who have fallen victim to people-traffickers because they cannot see any other option to save their lives — and we should all be generous to them as a result. I don't know much about Hanifyar's situation, other than the reports I have read suggesting that he has spent the past few years living in not-very-war-torn France and Germany. I can't say he looks all that traumatised to me. Were he genuinely fleeing from danger, you would expect him to be deeply grateful for the help he received from Border Agency officials who scooped him and his fellow migrants from their boat mid English Channel and sped them to Britain. You would think he would want to show his appreciation to the people of Britain. Instead, the tone of his now-defunct TikTok channel is one of gloating — and taking the mickey out of people whose taxes are funding his new life. 'Tell your friends to come,' he said to his 70,000 followers. He then went on, appearing to advertise the services of people-smugglers: 'Why are you so stingy? Being stingy is not good for God. You see, I risked my life! Why don't you come? My wish was to come to this hotel and live. I came here just for this.' Migrant housed in UK asylum hotel promoted how to kill 'cheating wives' with a razor blade Showing us all around his room at the Crowne Plaza at Heathrow, with its freshly pressed sheets and puffed-up pillows, he then says: 'This is dedicated to those haters who were happy thinking we either drowned or ended up dead.' Since his video was removed from TikTok, a darker side to Hanifyar has emerged. Taken for a ride In an earlier clip which seems to have been made in Germany in recent weeks, he put himself in the hypothetical situation of wanting to murder his wife. 'Before I kill her I drink a bottle of alcohol,' he says. 'When the police comes, they say, he was drunk.' I disassociate myself from anyone who wishes harm to Hanifyar or any other migrant, but police must now investigate what he posted, just as they — rightfully — do people who have called for attacks on migrants. A functioning asylum system would dismiss out of hand any claim by someone who has advocated violence. The reaction to Hanifyar's videos needs to go further than that. This, finally, needs to be the moment of realisation that Britain and its high-principled asylum system is being taken for a ride. 3 Listen to the refugee charities and you would think that no economic migrant ever tried to cheat the asylum system by posing as someone fleeing from danger, either by faking their nationality or by falsely claiming to be Christian, or gay. You would think that no migrant ever came here to commit a crime or involve themselves in terrorism. Sadly, we know that there are many migrants who have done just these things. Worse, our asylum system, which cravenly defers to the human rights establishment, so often refuses to deport them. The tragedy is that our failure to weed out the criminals, liars and chancers makes it much harder to help those who are genuinely fleeing for their lives. Like everything else in a democratic society, the asylum system ultimately depends on public consent, and cases of migrants fooling the system are utterly poisonous to public opinion on asylum. No one should be taken in by the swift action of TikTok, encouraged by the Prime Minister, to remove Hanifyar's video. In some ways, I wish it had stayed up so as to symbolise our pathetic borders policy. Even if this individual ends up being removed from Britain — and I am not holding my breath for that — there will be many others of his kind who will be waved through. We should be deeply suspicious of the motives of any asylum-seeker who has come here from France, unless they can claim a need to flee from Emmanuel Macron's government. boatloads of mostly young men who are sticking their fingers up at Britain.
