Commanders Coach Delighted With Deebo Samuel Despite Viral Narrative

Commanders Coach Delighted With Deebo Samuel Despite Viral Narrative

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
Now that the outspoken Deebo Samuel is in a new situation with the Washington Commanders, the former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver has a major spotlight on him.
As Samuel joined one of the NFC's biggest risers, the star wideout is expected to give them a big enough boost to help the Commanders get over the hump and potentially into the Super Bowl. As Samuel works through the early process of making such a large change in his career, NFL fans have found a reason to spread a negative narrative around the versatile threat.
Earlier this week, a video of Samuel running through a route at mandatory minicamp went viral for reasons that weren't ideal. Many have suggested that Samuel looked noticeably heavier than usual, and seemed to be moving slower than what fans are used to seeing.

Did Commanders head coach Dan Quinn catch wind of the viral narrative? He didn't comment on that exactly, but he did go out of his way to praise Samuel for his speed and ability to break away from defenders in the secondary after witnessing Samuel up close on his team for the first time this week.
"Deebo, I think, has been very impressive to me for maybe a different reason than I thought," Quinn told reporters this week.
"He was such a difficult person to tackle that you spent so much time [thinking], 'How are you going to tackle this person?' And somewhere along the way, I've forgotten how fast he is. And so, sometimes when you're playing against the receiver, you say, 'Man, you better either get him at the line or you better be on top of him.' With him so many times, there were so many run after catch plays that we had a tackling plan, and how would you go about it? Then I can remember one time he just ran by somebody down the field on a deep ball and I was like, 'Yeah, I forgot about that.' It didn't surprise me, but it was maybe I missed talking about it to that space because it was easily reminded, he's one of the fastest players on the team."

After 81 games with the 49ers, the veteran has produced 4,792 yards for 22 touchdowns in the receiving game, while rushing for 1,143 yards and 20 touchdowns.
One viral clip online caused many to suggest the peak has been surpassed. Quinn wanted to remind the public that Samuel is still very much the offensive threat they spent a fifth-round pick on this offseason.

International player trying out at Broncos mandatory minicamp

The Denver Broncos are taking a look at another Australian-born player. Among the seven players trying out at mandatory minicamp this week is Patrick Murtagh, a 25-year-old tight end who was a decathlete growing up before later switching to Australian rules football. He was rostered by the Gold Coast Football Club from 2020-2022 before joining the NFL's international player pathway program in 2023. Advertisement Murtagh had a brief stint with the Detroit Lions early in 2023 that was cut short by a medical issue. He then went to training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024, spending the regular season on injured reserve. The Jags waived the tight end this spring. The Broncos (and all 32 NFL teams) are allowed to carry an extra international player on the practice squad during the regular season. So if Denver signs a player like Murtagh and he ends up on the practice squad, he would not count against the 16-player limit. Teams also get an extra active roster spot for an international player during the offseason. Right now, Australian punter Jeremy Crawshaw is the team's designated international player, and he does not count against the 90-man offseason roster limit. Seven takeaways as the Commanders pack up shop until training camp

Vibes are still high. The Commanders wrapped up their veteran minicamp Thursday then kicked off their six-week break with a family cookout. Team owners Josh Harris, Mitchell Rales and Mark Ein, as well as president Mark Clouse, were on hand to watch the final practice and socialize afterward. But what was, in a sense, a celebratory beginning was also a bow on top of a months-long reset after the team reshaped its roster with an eye toward a deeper run this season. Here's what we learned about the team, and what remains unanswered.

Baltimore Ravens rookie LaJohntay Wester receiving one-on-one coaching from John Harbaugh

AI-assisted summary Former Colorado wide receiver LaJohntay Wester, a sixth-round NFL draft pick by the Baltimore Ravens, is impressing coaches with his special-teams play. Wester has been working closely with Ravens head coach John Harbaugh on improving his punt return skills during OTAs and minicamp. While primarily drafted for special teams, Wester's performance and coaching interactions could lead to a larger offensive role. Wester's impressive punt return statistics at Florida Atlantic earned him the AAC Special Teams Player of the Year in 2023. While most eyes have been on former Colorado stars Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter through the NFL's offseason programs, a few Buffs have gone under the radar, including the speedy receiver LaJohntay Wester. Wester was selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft and is expected to be an immediate playmaker on special teams, making his transition to the pros promising. With this combination of size and explosiveness, along with his toughness, Wester has been turning heads throughout OTAs and minicamp, even getting some one-on-one coaching from Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh. Harbaugh was spotted giving some advice to Wester that should help tune his return skills. The two spoke during drills, with Harbaugh coaching Wester on ball-tracking skills and drills he can use to improve his technique. Wester went on to implement those drills, improving with each punt he caught. In his lone season at Colorado, Wester had nine punt returns, with a 76-yard return against Utah, and averaged 12 yards per return. In his time with Florida Atlantic, however, he had carved out a role as a special teamer, returning 14 punts for 278 yards and one touchdown in 2023, earning him the American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Year. Though he is pegged as a special-teams contributor, his performance and rapport with Harbaugh could give him a broader role. Wester will still need to prove himself on Baltimore's special teams, especially as a sixth-round pick, to gain a larger role on the Ravens' offense. However, showing out during the offseason is a step in the right direction. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle With training camp around the corner, Wester has laid a strong foundation. While nothing is guaranteed, his willingness to learn and apply feedback from Harbaugh speaks volumes to his character.
