Blue city mayor vows 'no tolerance' for anti-ICE violence as LA riots erupt: 'Unacceptable'
Riots have occurred in Los Angeles in opposition to federal immigration authorities, in addition to demonstrations nationwide.
"I believe we must build a system based on trust not fear, but two wrongs do not make it right. I understand that some New Yorkers may be angry, afraid and ready to express that. New York City will always be a place to peacefully protest, we will not allow violence and lawlessness," Adams said. There have been protests throughout the city in recent days, Fox 5 New York reported.

"The escalation of protests in Los Angeles over the last couple of days is unacceptable and would not be tolerated if attempted in our city," he continued.
New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that if New York does "experience civil unrest of the sort that we have been witnessing in California, the full resources of the New York City Police Department are available and prepared to respond."

"We will maintain public order and we will do it consistent with the law," she added.
Tisch said the city does not "engage in civil immigration enforcement" but said they have "no tolerance for violence," "no tolerance for property damage" and "no tolerance" for blockade-style demonstrations.
Adams has exhibited a degree of cooperation with the Trump administration on federal immigration law, as a legal battle is underway to allow ICE to have an office on Riker's Island – a request that Adams supports, but the city council has sued him over in opposition.
In February, border czar Tom Homan and Adams said they plan to work together.

"Getting back in Rikers Island is a game changer. Not only do we get the bad guys really hitting the streets, the intelligence of how [Tren de Aragua] operates, where they're operating, all this intelligence they gather at Rikers Island, we have access to," Homan said in a joint interview with Adams on "Fox & Friends" at the time.
"The far left has hijacked this narrative [that] ICE is running in our schools, ICE is running in our churches, and they are creating this frenzy. They're not in the business of just grabbing children. We need to just stop all this noise," Adams said in the interview.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles area continues to face riots, which has created a standoff between President Donald Trump, who's ordered troops to the area, and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom. Over 100 people have been arrested, according to USA Today.
While there have been anti-ICE demonstrations during the day in Los Angeles and throughout the nation, the cause for concern has largely centered around property damage from agitators and looting businesses, according to Fox 11 LA.

Newsom has said the violence has been instigated by the president.
"Have no doubt – Violent criminals who take advantage of Trump's chaos WILL be held accountable. Our number one priority has been and will be keeping LA safe. If you're protesting peacefully. Stay calm. Look out for one another," Newsom posted to X on Monday night.

High Schooler Detained by ICE Couldn't Shower for a Week, Teacher Says

A Los Angeles teacher whose student was detained by federal agents while he walked his dog has told Newsweek that she believes mistaken bounty hunters plucked him off the street. Lizette Becerra, who works within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), visited Benjamin Marcelo Guerrero-Cruz, 18, in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention on Sunday. "For about seven days, he could not change, he was in his pajama shorts and slippers. He couldn't bathe. He couldn't brush his teeth. He was sleeping next to a toilet where he had to wake up every time someone went so that he wouldn't get urinated on," Becerra said. "It wasn't until Saturday morning that he was finally able to shower and was issued clothes," she said, adding that he told her he lost weight, as well. GoFundMe Teen Was Arrested While Walking His Dog Guerrero-Cruz is currently being held in the Adelanto Detention Facility, on the edge of Victorville outside of L.A. Before that, Becerra said, he had been moved between two other facilities in the city itself since his arrest around two weeks ago. "He says about 15 men, plain clothes with vests that said: 'Immigration Police' on them, in three SUVs, came up to him and just grabbed him and started calling him by another name," Becerra said, adding that the teen tried to tell the men he was not the person they were looking for. The agents told him they needed to take him to be fingerprinted anyway, to confirm his identity, and took his dog. Becerra said she believed the men were bounty hunters of some kind, who had been looking for a different person but still took Guerrero-Cruz in. "These people had his dog, unclipped the dog and stomped at the floor so that it could run away. Eventually it did make it back," Becerra said. Guerrero-Cruz was taken to a post office parking lot, where he was held by the men before official ICE agents arrived and transferred him to federal custody. En route, he allegedly heard the agents bragging they would get paid at least $1,500 for his arrest and would drink well that night, Becerra said. A 'Funny, Sweet Kid' Guerrero-Cruz came to the L.A. area in 2023, Becerra told Newsweek, where he joined her class for newly arrived immigrants wanting to learn English. She taught him for five months before he headed to Reseda Charter High School, where he was due to start his senior year this past week. "He was a very memorable kid. I knew exactly who he was. He was a funny, sweet kid," the teacher said. "I remember that if we ever had independent work, a lot of times I had to pull up a chair right next to my desk because he just wanted to talk and so I would just hear him out." Becerra explained that many of the immigrant children she has worked with have some form of trauma or another, including separation from their parents and the difficulties of navigating life as an immigrant in the U.S. She said that she puts a lot of heart into her students and that she was heartbroken to hear of Guerrero-Cruz's arrest. "With everything going here going on here in Los Angeles, I kind of knew this day was going to come and I just was praying that it wasn't, and it did," she said. The Van Nuys community has rallied around the student, raising thousands via GoFundMe to help with legal costs and to support his mother and siblings. The LAUSD previously told Newsweek that it was committed to protecting every one of its students during heightened immigration enforcement in the city, and that safety measures had been heightened for the new school year. Becerra said that, as a teacher, her job had certainly changed from how it was before the summer break. While she would check her classroom exits for potential active shooters, now she is on the lookout for federal agents who might take one of her kids. "We as a school district and teachers at large are operating in a world where we assume that the law is still respected and that our rights are going to be respected, and, unfortunately, what's happening on the street is not the case," Becerra said.

A joint statement was released by Assembly Member Catalina Cruz and Council Member Shekar Krishnan that reads in part, 'We are heartbroken to hear the news that early this morning, the Trump administration deported a 6-year-old student from PS 89 in Elmhurst, Queens, as well as her mother, to Ecuador.' More Local News The statement continues, 'There is no greater depravity than separating a family and deporting a 6-year-old child two weeks before she is supposed to start school. It is a shameful stain on our country's history and conscience. 'The Trump administration and its mass deportation agenda, carried out by ICE, is utilizing our courts as a means to detain, bully, and terrorize people who lawfully appear for their required check-ins and hearings. It has now torn a family apart, separating children from parents and ripping a young child from her community. 'Separating families doesn't make anyone safer. ‘Cornhusker Clink': DHS to open new ICE migrant detention facility in Nebraska
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Tuesday the opening of a migrant detention facility in Nebraska as President Trump's administration ramps up the expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) detention capabilities. The new facility, located in the southwest part of the state, was dubbed 'Cornhusker Clink' and will house 'criminal illegal aliens' arrested by ICE, DHS said in a press release. The detention center came as a result of a partnership between the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services and ICE, expanding the capacity by up to 280 beds. The officials are using the existing minimum security prison work camp in McCook, located around 210 west of Lincoln. Today, we're announcing a new partnership with the state of Nebraska to expand detention bed space by 280 beds,' Noem said in a statement. 'Thanks to Governor [Jim] Pillen [R] for his partnership to help remove the worst of the worst out of our country. Avoid arrest and self-deport now using the CBP Home App.' The administration has continued adding detention buildings nationwide to help hold migrants that agencies have arrested. DHS opened ' Alligator Alcatraz ' in the Florida Everglades last month and an East Montana detention facility in El Paso, Texas, this week. DHS will also hold up to 1,000 migrants in a ' Speedway Slammer ' detention facility in Indiana. Pillen announced Tuesday that the Nebraska National Guard will provide 'administrative and logistical' support to ICE officials based in Nebraska to help enforce immigration laws. About 20 Army National Guard soldiers will be a part of the mission, with training beginning next week, according to DHS. 'I am also proud that the Nebraska State Patrol and National Guard will be assisting ICE enforcement efforts, as well,' Pillen said in a statement. 'Homeland security starts at home, and, just as when I twice deployed troops to secure our southern border during the failed Biden administration, Nebraska will continue to do its part.'
