Alibaba releases Qwen-VLo, its latest AI image model rivaling OpenAI's GPT-4o

Indian Express30-06-2025
Alibaba has launched a new AI image generation model called Qwen-VLo that is said to have the ability to understand context and generate images based on that understanding.
'Today, we are excited to introduce a new model, Qwen VLo, a unified multimodal understanding and generation model. This newly upgraded model not only 'understands' the world but also generates high-quality recreations based on that understanding, truly bridging the gap between perception and creation,' the company said in a blog post published on June 26.
Unlike previous Alibaba models such as Qwen-VL, Qwen-VLo can offer the user more detailed images with significantly more accuracy. While previous models altered unrelated details within the image when the user requested only minor changes (such as colour), Qwen-VLo is able to preserve the original structure of the image and make the requested changes to it, as per the e-commerce giant.
The model is also able to understand open-ended requests, such as artistic style, weather changes, or even making the image bear resemblance to a specific time period. Alibaba also announced that the model would support multiple languages besides Chinese and English.
One of the model's notable features is Multiple Image Input. The model takes existing images provided by the user, alters the text within them, and is even able to manipulate them to become part of the generated image. For instance, in an example given by the company, the user provided images of individual bathing products and a basket, then asked Qwen-VLo to put the products into the basket.
However, this feature has not been officially rolled out within the model yet.
Qwen-VLo makes use of dynamic resolution training, allowing the user to re-size their images as per required dimensions, including 1:1, 3:4, and 16:9. The model also uses a progressive top-to-bottom, left-to-right generation process, which helps in tasks requiring fine control. However, in its blog post, the company has said that the model is still in the preview stage and users could encounter errors such as inconsistency and non-compliance.
The company further theorised that its AI models could be capable of conveying ideas and meanings through the images it creates in the future. Alibaba also proposed model generating segmentation/ detection maps to further improve the performance of Qwen-VLo.
Widely known for its e-commerce business in China, Alibaba has thrown its hat into the AI race. The company's CEO, Eddie Wu, even said that Alibaba is now fully focused on AI model development and aims to build AI systems with human-level intellectual capabilities.

India clarifies ‘no change in position' on Taiwan after Chinese readout attributes ‘part of China' remark to Jaishankar

India on Tuesday denied Beijing's claim that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had described Taiwan as 'a part of China' during his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, asserting that there has been 'no change in India's position' on the matter. The clarification followed the release of the Chinese foreign ministry's readout of the Jaishankar–Wang meeting on Monday evening in New Delhi. According to the translation, Beijing attributed to Jaishankar the following remarks: 'The relationship between India and China remains stable, cooperative and forward-looking, which is in line with the interests of both countries. Taiwan is a part of China.' According to New Delhi's account, the Chinese side raised the issue of Taiwan, to which India responded that its approach remained unchanged. India underscored that, like many other nations, it engages with Taiwan in areas such as economic, technological and cultural cooperation, which will continue. 'The Chinese side raised the issue of Taiwan. The Indian side underlined that there was no change in its position on this issue. It pointed out that, like the rest of the world, India had a relationship with Taiwan that focuses on economic, technological and cultural ties and that this would continue. The Indian side noted that China also cooperates with Taiwan in these very domains.' the press release read. India endorsed the 'One-China' policy in the past, but the phrase has not appeared in any bilateral document since 2011. While New Delhi does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taipei, both sides have steadily built connections over the past three decades. In 1995, India set up the India–Taipei Association (ITA) in Taiwan to promote trade, tourism and cultural exchanges, while Taiwan opened its Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in Delhi. Last year, the two sides signed a migration and mobility agreement, paving the way for Indian workers to be employed in diverse sectors on the island. Trade cooperation has been expanding, with New Delhi particularly interested in Taiwan's expertise in semiconductors, a sector critical to global supply chains. Taiwan, a self-ruled island of more than 23 million people, produces nearly 70% of the world's semiconductors, including the most advanced chips used in smartphones, data centres, defence technology and artificial intelligence. Beijing, however, continues to pressure countries to refrain from any official recognition of Taiwan, urging India repeatedly to reaffirm its commitment to the One-China principle. In talks with Wang, Jaishankar raised India's concerns with regard to mega dam construction in lower reaches of Yarlung Tsangpo river, informed MEA. China's construction of dams in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo river, which flows into India as the Brahmaputra, has raised concerns over potential ecological disruption and transboundary water security. New Delhi has consistently sought greater transparency from Beijing on such hydropower projects, emphasising the need for prior information-sharing and cooperative management of shared river systems. India strongly underlined its concerns over the construction of a dam on Brahmaputra river and raised the issue of cross-border terrorism with China. On 8 August, in a written response to a query in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, said the project was first made public as far back as 1986 and since then, preparations have been underway in China. The government of India has "taken note of reports about commencement of construction of mega dam project by China on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo (upper reaches of the Brahmaputra) River in Tibet," he said. The government "carefully monitors" all developments relating to the Brahmaputra River, including plans by China to develop hydropower projects, and "takes necessary measures to protect our interests, including preventive and corrective measures to safeguard life and livelihood of Indian citizens residing in the downstream areas", he said.

Sam Altman admits Chinese AI pushed OpenAI to release its own open-weight models

OpenAI made a big move earlier this month. Ahead of ChatGPT 5's release on August 7, the company released two open-eight models. This was the first time the AI startup had launched open-weight models since GPT 2 in 2019. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has now accepted that Chinese rivals played a key role in this two open-weight models launched were gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b. The former is a large model meant to work with data systems and high-end laptops. On the other hand, gpt-oss-20b can work on most laptops, desktops, and even on phones with relatively modest hardware, per OpenAI. These models which can be run locally and customised by researchers, developers, and this year, DeepSeek shook the AI space with its R1 model. Not only did R1 match the likes of ChatGPT and Gemini, it was also open-source. This allowed users to get much more freedom compared to closed AI models like ChatGPT. This sparked fears within OpenAI. Sam Altman claimed that releasing open-weight models became a necessity to avoid Chinese dominance. He told CNBC, 'It was clear that if we didn't do it, the world was gonna head to be mostly built on Chinese open-source models.'Altman accepted that this was a serious reason behind the release. However, he clarified that it was not the only open-weight model really meansAn open-weight model like gpt-oss is not the same as an open-source model like DeepSeek R1. In an open-weight model, users are given access to 'weights.' Weights refer to the characteristics or elements that are you used to train a Large Language Model (LLM).For certain queries, the AI gives more weight to certain words or sequences. An open-weight model gives access of these weights to users. Developers can then see these weights and how they're used in the creation of AI the way the AI was trained or the information used to train the model remain restricted. Thus, the code or the information used to train gpt-oss is not available to the ChatGPT's open-weight models can be crucial. Developers can not only understand the weights of the models, but use them locally or add them to pre-existing programs. This will help negate the dependence on Chinese open-source models, strengthening US' move comes at a time when the US government is concerned about China's rise in the AI race. The Trump administration has even put stricter restrictions on advanced chip sales to Beijing.- Ends
