Police nab over 250 in continued crime disruption efforts
More than 250 suspects were arrested and individuals fined for various offences as police continued to enhance crime-curbing efforts in high-risk areas in the Tshwane district on Saturday.
This co-ordinated operation was executed under the command of Tshwane District Commissioner, Major-General Samuel Thine, with a multidisciplinary law enforcement team.
SAPS members from stations across the district, the Department of Home Affairs and the Gauteng Traffic Wardens assembled.
According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, 288 suspects were arrested in the western areas of Mamelodi and Eersterust.
He said Tshwane detectives were responsible for the arrests of 235 suspects for various offences, including 72 for gender-based violence, four for murder, one for armed robbery and 26 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
'The operation also included the continued apprehension of wanted individuals, an increased visible policing presence through the strategic deployment of officers and resources, and the enforcement of liquor regulations in high-risk areas.'
He said that as a result of two operational teams conducting compliance inspections and enforcement actions, 12 undocumented individuals were put in police custody and are currently undergoing legal processes related to deportation.
'Police also conducted searches and patrols at 16 identified premises and known crime hotspots, which led to 10 arrests for drug possession, and the confiscation of 14 sachets containing various illicit substances.
'Liquor compliance inspections were conducted at six establishments, of which three were shut down for non-compliance with the Liquor Act and alcohol was confiscated,' said Van Dyk.
He said 20 individuals were fined and arrested for public drinking, one person for drunkenness, and eight drivers for driving under the influence.
'A total of 378 individuals and 286 vehicles were searched, with 96 individuals being processed to determine whether they are wanted for any offences during the operation,' he said.
He stated that Thine expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders for their ongoing commitment to executing the operations.

Community helps to apprehend a store robber
A 40-year-old male suspect is expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate's Court this week for robbing a store this past weekend. The arrest came on June 7 at around 15:00 when the suspect was held by community members near the store at the corner of Bloed and Lillian Ngoyi streets. According to Pretoria Central police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise, the suspect had stormed into one of the stores, instructed the owner to close the door and demanded cash. The assailant also struck the owner on the forehead with a firearm he was brandishing, and after collecting the money, fled the scene. 'As he intended to flee the scene, he fired one shot. Community management cornered the suspect and apprehended him with the firearm. The police were called to the scene, and the suspect was handed over to the police,' Nkhumise said. Police recovered the handgun, a Taurus 9mm magazine loaded with 16 rounds, cash amounting to R3 000 and three cellphones. The suspect was later taken to the Pretoria Central Station for dentition and charged. Station commander Brigadier Hlengani Gibin Mashaba welcomed the arrest and thanked the community for their bravery in cornering the suspect as he intended to flee the crime scene. 'We understand the danger the community was faced with but I'm happy that no one was harmed in the process. This shows that policing is a joint effort, and the police are still dependent on the community to come forward and report any criminal activities. Whistleblowing plays a crucial role in curbing the surge of crime, and the masses can report crime anonymously,' Mashaba said. The suspect will also face charges of pointing, assaulting, and discharging a firearm in a public space. Dirty cops dismissed after kidnapping and extortion arrests
Two SAPS members have been dismissed following their arrest for kidnapping and extortion in a case that has sent shockwaves through Gauteng. Constables Thabiso Pule Paul Molefe (32) and Paseka Matena (33), both members of the SAPS Highway Patrol Unit, were arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) earlier this year in connection with a case opened in Springs. The two officers were found guilty following internal disciplinary hearings conducted under the SAPS Discipline Regulations of 2016. Both have been sanctioned with dismissal, pending final confirmation by the Provincial Commissioner. Public reaction to the arrests and dismissals has been swift. Ian Cameron, DA Member of Parliament and well-known policing accountability advocate, took to social media to praise the outcome. 'SOME GOOD NEWS: DIRTY COPS OUT,' he wrote, highlighting this as a meaningful example of consequence management in the SAPS. 'The public demands accountability, and this is a step in the right direction. We need a police service that earns the trust of law-abiding South Africans.' Molefe, who is reportedly the son of a former high-ranking police official, and his co-accused Matena, were allegedly involved in a scheme where they kidnapped victims and extorted money from them under the guise of official police operations. Their arrest and dismissal are being hailed as a success for IPID and an important signal that misconduct within SAPS will not be tolerated. The case also underscores growing calls for transparency and reform in the police service. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
