SAPS arrest many in Ekangala, Bronkies
The SAPS arrested more than 280 people and recovered a firearm in the Bronkhorstspruit and Ekangala areas on May 17. The arrests came through Operation Shanela in the SAPS Tshwane's high-impact crime-combating initiative, targeting the Ekangala and Bronkhorstspruit policing precincts. Captain Johan van Dyk, the Tshwane district communication co-ordinator, said the operation saw 289 arrests for various offences. 'This success is attributed to focused deployment strategies and intensified law enforcement visibility, with specific attention given to liquor compliance and the apprehension of wanted suspects.' Detectives in the Tshwane district were responsible for 226 of these arrests. These included 75 arrests for GBV-related offenses, four for kidnapping, six for intimidation, four for attempted murder, 15 for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and one for rape. A roadblock in Ekangala and mobile tactical teams throughout the area saw 15 undocumented foreign nationals detained. 'Immigration authorities are processing these individuals for deportation,' said Van Dyk. Law enforcers searched 508 individuals and 281 vehicles, leading to 27 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol. 'Additional targeted patrols of 11 identified hotspots resulted in 14 arrests and fines for public drinking. Officers arrested one suspect for possession of an unlicensed firearm. 'The weapon, previously reported as stolen in Rietgat, will undergo forensic testing to determine if it was used in any other criminal activity. The suspect is under investigation for potential links to other offences.' Traffic law enforcement officers issued 81 AARTO infringement notices, amounting to R47 850 in fines, for various road traffic violations. Liquor inspections at 20 establishments saw officers close three premises and confiscate about 306l of alcohol. Under the leadership of the district commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Samuel Thine, a multidisciplinary team comprising SAPS members, the Department of Home Affairs, the TMPD, the Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens and CPFs from the respective stations executed this operation. Major-General Thine thanked all role players for their dedication and teamwork in ensuring the operation's success. Mamelodi spaza shop owner murdered, police investigation underway
Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old spaza shop owner in Mamelodi East, Tshwane, following an altercation that occurred yesterday morning. Pretoria Rekord reports that, according to police, the deceased is believed to be an Ethiopian national. Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk says officers from the Mamelodi East Police Station were dispatched to the scene around 08:00 yesterday after receiving reports of a shooting. 'Preliminary investigations indicate that an altercation between the suspect and the victim took place earlier that morning, around 06:00, outside the victim's spaza shop,' he says. Van Dyk adds that the victim was reportedly sitting inside his white Toyota Corolla at the time of the dispute. 'During the argument, the suspect allegedly drew a firearm and fired several shots through the windscreen of the vehicle, striking the victim multiple times.' The suspect then fled the scene. Van Dyk says family members were informed shortly after the shooting and rushed to the scene. 'They transported the injured man to hospital using the same vehicle he had been shot in,' he adds. However, while en route, the vehicle was stopped by Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department officers, who discovered the victim in the back seat. 'When the officers inspected the vehicle, the victim had already succumbed to his injuries.' Crime scene experts were called to the location to process the area and gather forensic evidence, which will aid detectives in tracking down the perpetrator. 'A case of murder has been opened, and we are actively following all available leads in an effort to trace and apprehend the suspect.' Three charged with attempted hijacking, robbery
A dramatic turn of events saw police arrest three suspects for attempted hijacking and possession of an illegal firearm in Cullinan on May 12. The incident occurred around 15:10. According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, a motorist was driving along the M10 when he was approached by armed suspects in an attempted hijacking. According to his statement, the victim pulled over to the side of the road when a white VW Jetta stopped in front of him. 'Three men exited the vehicle, one armed with a firearm and instructed him to get out of his car.' Van Dyk explained that before the suspects could proceed with their crime, they noticed a police vehicle approaching. He said the suspects panicked, ordered the victim to leave, and quickly fled back into their vehicle. 'The nearby police officers were immediately alerted and responded swiftly. They managed to intercept the suspects and apprehended all three,' van Dyk said. He said a police search of the suspects uncovered a firearm with eight rounds of bullets. He said the suspects were unable to provide a valid explanation for possession of the weapon. 'The suspects were arrested and charged with attempted hijacking as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,' said van Dyk. He added that further investigation is underway to determine if the suspects are linked to other criminal activities. The firearm will also be subjected to ballistic testing to establish if it has been used in previous crimes. Major-General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, praised the officers involved for their swift response and commitment to ensuring community safety.
