Cracks, broken dividers put drivers at risk on Kisan Path

Time of India7 hours ago

Lucknow: A TOI reality check on the Outer Ring Road, also known as Kisan Path, uncovered several commuter hazards that go well beyond minor road damage.
Deep cracks along multiple stretches, deliberately broken dividers to facilitate two-wheeler crossings and defunct speed check boards meant to curb rash driving were among the major issues observed.
Adding to the concern, several vehicles — especially two-wheelers and cars — were found driving on the wrong side of the road at various locations. There was no visible presence of traffic police or National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) personnel to monitor or prevent these violations.
Intended to ease the city's traffic burden, the 104-km, Rs 6,214-crore Kisan Path instead became a high-risk corridor due to damaged infrastructure and lack of enforcement.
The TOI survey began from the stretch near Kalli Paschim village close to PGI. The entrance was marked by a faded, partially damaged signboard and a pothole—setting the tone for what lay ahead.
As the journey continued towards Sultanpur Road, the divider near Sarthuwa Village in the Mohanlalganj area was found damaged—reportedly broken to allow two-wheelers to cross over. Beyond this point, the road was relatively smooth up to Noorpur Behata, where some patchwork was done by the NHAI.
However, at Noorpur Behata, a broken roadside barrier was observed, potentially allowing stray animals to wander onto the road. A crater, poorly patched, was already beginning to peel. The absence of street lighting in this stretch further added to the risks, particularly during nighttime travel.
The TOI vehicle encountered a few bumpy sections as the journey progressed, but the road was largely manageable. Still, at multiple points—including near Sultanpur Road—wrong-side driving was widespread.
Vehicles, including both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, were seen flouting traffic norms with no enforcement in sight.
In Bijnor, a deep crater on the road posed a major hazard to fast-moving vehicles. Several other stretches showed signs of recent repair work, with some patches appearing to be filled just a day or two earlier.
A particularly alarming sight was observed near Kakori and its surrounding areas, where a cow was seen crossing the high-speed corridor, navigating between vehicles travelling at an average speed of 60–70 km/h.
This posed a serious danger to both commuters and the animal.
Near Moradabad village along Deva Road, a bridge showed extensive wear, with long cracks clearly visible on its surface.
When asked, Lt Col Retd Sharadchand Singh, project director, NHAI, who oversees the Kisan Path project, said, "We are already carrying out repair work wherever required. Our teams continuously survey the entire stretch and address issues as they arise. Additionally, if someone notices a problem, they can report it through NHAI's helpline or mobile app, and it will be resolved promptly."

Tata Motors aims to race past Hyundai, M&M riding on Rs 35,000 crore investments

Tata Motors has shared ambitious plans to stay ahead of its peers and gain greater market share in Indian passenger vehicle market with Rs 33,000 crore to Rs 35,000 crore cheque it plans to keep ready for investments. The Indian automaker also set its sights on expanding its passenger vehicle market share to 16 per cent by FY27, even as its share remained unchanged at 14 per cent in FY25. However, in the next two-three years, the automaker aims to beat its Korean counterpart with a longer-term target of reaching 18-20 per cent. The automaker said that capital allocation over FY26-FY30 will be sharply focused on electric mobility, software-defined vehicles (SDVs), and new-age powertrains, product innovation, feature-rich launches, and higher EV penetration to offset current challenges. While Mahindra & Mahindra gained ground with a jump to 13 per cent, Tata Motors' share held steady at 14 per cent, the same as FY24, following a three-year growth streak since FY21 when it stood at 8 per cent. Live Events Hyundai 's share, too, stood at 14 per cent market share in FY25. Tata acknowledged multiple headwinds impacting profitability in FY25. These included demand moderation, increased dealer incentives to manage stock levels, and inflationary pressure on input costs and forex. Competitive intensity in the SUV space also limited price increases on feature-rich models, even as the salience of top-end trims declined. Tata Motors' and Hyundai shares were trading at Rs 718.05 and Rs 1925.40 apiece, up 0.95 and 3.50 per cent respectively on the BSE as of 12.08 PM. TaMo is charged by EVs Tata's electric vehicle (EV) plans remain a cornerstone of its growth strategy. The company aims to achieve 20 per cent EV penetration in its passenger vehicle portfolio by FY27 and over 30 per cent by FY30. This comes at a time when competitive pressure has risen significantly in India's SUV and EV segments. Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, and Mahindra are adding pressure in the ICE space, while the electric vehicle market is getting more crowded. Global entrants like BYD, MG Motor, and now Vietnam's VinFast are stepping up their presence. Tata Motors holds a 38 per cent market share in the EV space, followed by MG Motor at 29 per cent and Mahindra at 16 per cent. India's electric car sales in 2024 rose 20 per cent year-on-year, nearing 1 lakh units. VinFast is set to open a car assembly plant in India by June-end, following a $500 million investment under a larger $2 billion commitment to Tamil Nadu. Backed by Vietnam's Vingroup, VinFast, began EV production in 2021 and had initially focused on the U.S. market. However, delays and regulatory challenges in the US prompted the company to diversify. Its India push now aligns with the growing list of Asian automakers looking to capture a slice of India's fast-expanding EV market. Meanwhile, Tesla, which had registered a local unit more than four years ago, is yet to launch operations in India. While Tata Motors leads the domestic passenger EV market key rivals are also scaling up their efforts: Mahindra is preparing to launch its INGLO platform-based BE and XUV.e series, focusing on performance and premium positioning. Hyundai and Kia have introduced dedicated EV models such as Ioniq 5 and EV6, with fast-charging features and global EV architecture. Maruti Suzuki, though relatively late, has committed to rolling out its first electric SUV in 2025, with joint support from Toyota. The company is also targeting to become number one EV manufacturer in India within one year, MG Motor plans to localize battery assembly in India. Tata Motors also expects to deliver a positive EBITDA from its EV division in FY26, with volume growth continuing ahead of the broader market. 'We are committed to strengthening our market position and improving profitability. Free cash flow of Rs 1,000 crore and double-digit EBITDA margins remain our medium-term goals,' the company stated in the presentation. Furthermore, the automaker also plans to expand its charging infrastructure five-fold by FY26. As of FY25, the company has over 22,000 public charging points, and over 1.8 lakh home chargers. Tata Motors aims to scale this to 1 million home chargers and over 100,000 public charging points by FY30. The company is also introducing 'Mega Chargers' with 120kW capacity on 40+ mobility corridors, connecting over 100 cities across 20 states. These ultra-fast chargers will offer preferential tariffs, remote tech support, and seamless access via the app. Looking ahead, Tata Motors expects demand growth to stay muted and competitive pressures to remain elevated. It aims to sustain momentum through key product launches including the Sierra SUV in the second half of FY26 and several refreshes with enhanced features.

Bullet cops to add muscle to Bhubaneswar's city's traffic management

BHUBANESWAR: Commissionerate Police is planning to add muscle to its vehicular fleet by procuring Royal Enfield Bullets for carrying out various traffic duties in the capital city. It has submitted a proposal to the state government to procure 50 bullets for its traffic wing at an estimated cost of Rs 75 lakh. Once procured, the bullets will be deployed for various traffic duties like piloting VIP convoys, clearing road congestion and conducting various enforcement activities. Police said they planned to procure the bullets as they have an upright riding posture that is both commanding and comfortable. This apart, they have cushioned seats, perfectly-positioned foot pegs and well-adjusted handle bars which will provide the traffic personnel an easy ride on the city roads without making them fatigued. Sources said the Commissionerate Police's traffic wing lacks adequate motorcycles to carry out enforcement activities in narrow lanes where the patrolling cars cannot reach, and the new addition will give them more teeth.

New Ather Electric Scooter Headlight Design Patent Revealed

It is no secret that Ather Energy is working on a new electric scooter, which is likely to be positioned below the Rizta, a family scooter. The new electric scooter will be more affordable than any of the current Ather models and is likely to be comfort and commuter oriented rather being sporty. Now, we have an image of the design patent of the headlight assembly of the new electric scooter, which is rectangular in shape and could likely house one or two LED projector units. The design has been billed as the 'front shroud of the vehicle'. The new headlight assembly could also have an LED lamp and is likely to get DRLs, which one can see, are bordering the rectangular headlight. What is also interesting to note that this will be the first Ather model to have a headlight on the handlebar. The 450 series and the Rizta have their headlights on the front apron and both models have a very distinct headlight design compared to the one seen in the design patent. Now, it is unlikely that the new headlight assembly will be used on a motorcycle because the cutouts where the handlebar will fit, is usually seen on scooters. Presently, prices of the Ather 450 range start at Rs. 1.20 lakh for the Ather 450 and Rs. 1.90 lakh for the 450 Apex. Prices of the Rizta start at Rs. 1.05 lakh. Expect the prices of the new Ather scooter to start below Rs. 1 lakh.
