‘Op Sindoor' popular theme of Durga Puja
Kolkata: Operation Sindoor -- the recent cross-border military strike by Indian armed forces on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupiedKashmir -- will be the central theme of this year's Durga Puja celebration at the popular Santosh Mitra Square in Kolkata. The puja is organised by BJP leader and local councillor Sajal Ghosh.
Ghosh, councillor of Ward 50 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and chief organiser of the Santosh Mitra Square Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samiti, announced the theme through a post on social media.
Like in previous years, the committee has once again refused to accept the annual financial grant given by the West Bengal government to community puja organisers. Santosh Mitra Square was among the first Durga Puja committees in the state to reject the state's monetary assistance, with Ghosh calling it a misuse of public funds at a time when the government struggles to meet essential civic expenses.
Last year, several other puja committees also declined the grant, citing public outrage over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata and the alleged cover-up attempts by sections of the administration.
In 2023, the puja's theme was the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had attended the celebrations that year.
Santosh Mitra Square stands out as one of the few prominent Durga Pujas in West Bengal not controlled by the ruling Trinamool Congress. It is the only major puja in the state spearheaded by a BJP leader, and has matched TMC-led pujas in scale and public turnout.

The penultimate day of campaign for the Ludhiana West Assembly by-election, scheduled on June 19, on Monday threw traffic out of gear, creating chaos, confusion and tense moments. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal launched his roadshow at Jawahar Nagar Camp and moved towards the road opposite ESI Hospital near the bus stand. Despite intermittent rains, the show of strength continued uninterrupted, with Sukhbir standing in an open SUV, greeting people alongside the route. When the SAD roadshow approached Fountain Chowk, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rally was in progress there. To avoid a direct clash, the SAD procession was diverted via Sutlej Club road before rejoining the original route at Fountain Chowk and then towards Rani Jhansi road. At one point, the SAD roadshow passed close to the AAP rally venue, prompting supporters from both sides to raise slogans in support of their respective parties. The AAP rally had party candidate Sanjeev Arora, senior Dalit leader Vijay Danav, a former SAD member, star campaigner Rakhi Birla among others present at the venue. AAP leaders also organised a bike rally starting from fountain chowk amid rain. Speaking on the occasion Rakhi Birla said,' overwhelming public response clearly indicates that Arora will win the seat by a huge margin. She said the voters are not just electing an MLA, but a future Cabinet Minister, as both AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann have already endorsed Arora's elevation post-election. She praised Arora as a hardworking, development-focused leader who is personally reaching out to every voter in the constituency.' Addressing party supporters, Sukhbir said, 'The massive response to our roadshow proves the people of Ludhiana are fed up with Congress's gundagardi candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu and the complete failure of the AAP government in resolving their issues. Development is at an all-time low, with no civic works being undertaken in the city in the past eight years. The SAD is known for carrying out speedy development, be it flyovers or the Southern bypass, all major infrastructure development came up during the SAD tenure.' However, the situation grew complicated as the SAD roadshow proceeded further through Rani Jhansi road and towards Ghumar Mandi, with its final destination being Aarti Chowk. To prevent escalation, BJP's former state president Avinash Rai Khanna instructed party workers to halt briefly near Shenshah Palace, allowing the SAD procession, which concluded at Aarti Chowk by around 7.15 pm, paving the way for the BJP roadshow. Anurag Thakur said that AAP people first looted the people of Delhi. 'When the people of Delhi rejected them, now they have turned towards Punjab. Sunil Jakhar said that seeing the huge crowd in the road show, it seems that the people of Ludhiana have accepted Jiwan Gupta even before the voting. BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta said,' in three and a half years, the AAP government did not do any concrete work for the development of the constituency. Now in one and a half years, with which Aladdin's lamp will the area be developed?'

Indian students evacuated from Tehran, some moved out of country via Armenia: MEA
New Delhi: Indian students in Tehran have been relocated from the city, and some Indian nationals have been assisted in leaving the country through the border with Armenia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Tuesday amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. As the Israel-Iran conflict entered its fifth day, the hostilities between the two nations continued to escalate as several missiles from Iran were fired at Israel, triggering air raid sirens in Haifa and dozens of other cities and communities across northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights, confirmed by the Israeli military. "Indian students in Tehran have been moved out of the city for reasons of safety, through arrangements made by the Embassy. Other residents who are self-sufficient in terms of transport have also been advised to move out of the city in view of the developing situation," the MEA said. "Separately, some Indians have been facilitated to leave Iran through the border with Armenia," it added. The Ministry also said that the Indian Embassy is continuously in touch with the community to provide all feasible assistance. It stated that further advisory will be issued for the security of Indian nationals. Earlier in the day, India urged its nationals in Iran and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) to evacuate Tehran and shift to a safer location following escalating tensions in the region. "All Indian Nationals and PIOs who can move out of Tehran using their own resources, are advised to move to a safe location outside the City," the Indian Embassy in Iran had posted on X. The Indians were asked to be in touch with the Embassy and provide their location and contact numbers. This also comes against the backdrop of Israel's warning to people, advising them to evacuate central Tehran, signalling a possible escalation in its military offensive on Iran. In a post on X, Avichay Adraee, a spokesman for the Israeli military, called residents of District C, located in the northeastern part of the city, to evacuate. "In the coming hours, the Israeli army will operate in this area, as it has over recent days in other parts of Tehran, to strike military infrastructure belonging to the Iranian regime," Adraee said. "Your presence in this area endangers your life," he said. "For your safety and security, we urge you to immediately evacuate." Several important state institutions, government offices, and semi-governmental organisations, as well as communication and intelligence facilities, are located in District C, Xinhua news agency reported. The Israeli military said in a statement that since the morning hours, Israeli warplanes have struck trucks containing weapons and surface-to-air missile launchers, advancing from western Iran toward Tehran.
