Storm damage disrupts non-emergency dispatch calls in south Chicago suburbs

Damage from storms this week disrupted the non-emergency dispatch line and some other services in four south Chicago suburbs, but 911 emergency services were unaffected. Spokesman Sean Howard said the non-emergency line and medical and fire alarm signals have been disrupted at the SouthCom Emergency Dispatch Center. The south suburbs of Matteson, Olympia Fields, Park Forest, and Richton Park were affected. But all 911 emergency services remain fully operational, and Howard wrote that there is no risk to public safety. Anyone experiencing an emergency should call 911. Emergency crews were working late Wednesday to restore all communication services. An update will be provided Thursday morning.

Little Rock nonprofit moves forward with permanent shelter for homeless

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – After years of searching, The Van — a nonprofit that supports people experiencing homelessness — is now under contract for a new building that will serve as a permanent emergency shelter. The announcement comes after two previous attempts fell through. The most recent search ended in July 2025, and the first in December 2024, when founder Aaron Reddin learned the property he was pursuing did not have legitimate owners. People donate over $50,000 overnight to The Van to help with homeless shelters in Central Arkansas Reddin said the need for shelter in Little Rock is urgent, with thousands of people living without a roof over their heads. 'Everything closes. Everything shuts down. There's nowhere to go,' Reddin said. 'This past year, we saw seven amputations from frostbite.' The shelter marks a major expansion from The Van's current mobile outreach model, which provides food, water, and hygiene products. The new facility will offer showers, bathrooms, cots and a place to eat. Reddin said the goal is to provide a safe space where people can come in 'no matter the weather' and take a break from the streets. 'It's going to be comfortable,' he said. 'It's not going to be this sterile, institutionalized place. I want people to come in and feel comfortable. Take a load off. Take a deep breath.' The chosen property met several requirements: it is located outside city limits for better access, has multiple entry points in case of traffic and includes a working sewer system. The shelter is expected to open in November. The Van has raised more than $350,000 toward its fundraising goal. The Van announces partnership with city of Little Rock to open winter shelter In the meantime, the group's most-needed donations are men's clothing — especially pants, shoes, belts, and socks. Tropical Storm Erin's path uncertain as steering patterns shift in Atlantic

[Tropical Storm Erin]( the fifth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, is on schedule for a long journey across the ocean — but its final location is still unknown. The National Hurricane Centre now predicts Erin will strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane by the end of the week, with the possibility of intensifying further over the weekend. Favourable conditions, such as low wind shear, are expected to support development. RELATED: Two possible tracks emerging The storm's impact will be dependent on how the upper-level steering patterns change over the next few days. By Sunday, high pressure is expected to rebuild over the Atlantic Ocean, potentially pushing the hurricane westward and closer to the U.S. eastern seaboard. Another potential outcome is that a diving trough sweeping across eastern Canada will absorb the storm and direct it towards Atlantic Canada. Forecasters say the precise timing of this trough is a major uncertainty. MUST SEE: Risks remain despite uncertainty Even without a clear track, the likelihood of dangerous surf and rip currents is expected to increase along certain sections of the shoreline. Meteorologists warn that minor changes in the storm's path could result in significant differences in who experiences impacts. Forecasters will continue to closely monitor the storm in the coming days, with a more complete picture expected early next week.
