Man who manufactured Kpods for sale at Yishun home pleads guilty, sentencing adjourned
Mohammed Akil Abdul Rahim, 41, was caught after a deliveryman who had collected a package from outside his Yishun unit on Dec 11, 2024, found vape pods in the parcel. The deliveryman went straight to the police and handed the items over.
The authorities searched the flat at Block 296B Yishun Street 22 later that day and found hundreds of similar paraphernalia.
These included 569 empty pod casings, 1,485 pod covers, 100 loose vape pods and disposable vapes. Enough etomidate powder to fill another 72 vape pods was found in his home.
Mohammed Akil's case is the first prosecution for e-vaporisers containing etomidate before the courts, a Health Sciences Authority (HSA) prosecutor said.
Etomidate is a fast-acting anaesthetic used in medical procedures. It is listed as a poison, and its sale is regulated. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said last month that Singapore is working to list etomidate as a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Adverse effects of etomidate include nausea and vomiting, uncontrollable movement or spasm of muscles, changes to breathing and blood pressure, and seizures and psychosis that can endanger health.
HSA detected 28 cases involving etomidate this year, as of Jun 30.
Mohammed Akil on Wednesday pleaded guilty to one count of possessing for sale 100 loose e-vaporiser pods, one count of possessing for sale 569 empty pod casings, 534 pieces of pod components, and 1,485 pod covers, as well as one count of possessing for sale 26.4g of white powder which contained etomidate.
Another four counts of a similar nature will be taken into consideration when he is sentenced.
He also pleaded guilty to one count of making a false statement to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority in an application for a new passport.
This was after his passport had been impounded by the authorities pending investigations against him.
Mohammad Akil lied to obtain a new passport to visit his girlfriend in Johor Bahru, the court heard.
The court heard that Mohammed Akil claimed to have met a person known as Joe in October 2024 while at a mall in Johor Bahru. Joe offered him a job to prepare vape pods and sell them.
He arranged for the necessary paraphernalia to be sent to Mohammed Akil's home. To prepare the pods, Mohammed Akil would mix e-liquid with etomidate powder and use a syringe to inject the mixture into the pod.
Joe would provide Mohammad Akil's number to potential customers, who would then contact him directly. Mohammad Akil was paid a sum of money for his services.
He had prepared 100 pods and placed them in a paper bag for a customer on Dec 11, 2024. He left the bag outside his unit and asked the customer to send someone to collect it. That was the second order he sent out, with the first also for 100 pods.
Mohammad Akil's sentencing has been adjourned to Aug 26.

Singapore recalls three French cheeses due to potential listeria contamination
SINGAPORE: The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has recalled three types of cheeses from France due to a risk of possible listeria contamination. The three products are Vieux Porche Camembert De Caractere (imported by Classic Fine Foods), Royal Faucon Camembert De Caractere (brought in by Culina) and Vieux Porche Buchette (imported by Classic Fine Foods and Indoguna). Listeria is a foodborne bacterium that can cause food poisoning, with symptoms such as fever, muscle ache, nausea and diarrhoea. It poses a higher risk for newborns, the elderly, pregnant women and people with weak immunity. The move in Singapore follows a decision in France to recall several kinds of camembert, brie and other soft cheeses after two people died from listeriosis infection and several fell ill. The French health ministry said on Wednesday (Aug 13) that a possible link had been established between the listeriosis cases and consumption of products from dairy firm Chavegrand. Chavegrand produces cheese for several French supermarket chains. Some of its products are sold internationally under various brand names. The three products recalled by SFA are all listed on Chavegrand's website. RECALLED PRODUCTS SFA first announced the recall of Vieux Porche Buchette on Wednesday, affecting all batches with a best before date of up to Aug 20, 2025. The recall was expanded on Thursday to include Vieux Porche Camembert De Caractere (best before date of up to Aug 30, 2025) and Royal Faucon Camembert De Caractere (best before date Aug 17). 'Consumers who have purchased the implicated products are advised not to consume it,' said the agency. 'Those who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice. Consumers may contact their point of purchase for enquiries.' SFA noted that soft cheeses, including those ripened by mould, have a higher risk of being contaminated by listeria. Other foods with a higher risk of contamination include unpasteurised dairy products, refrigerated meat spreads, smoked fish, as well as ready-to-eat deli meats and sausages.

Teen charged over possession of three etomidate-laced Kpods in Potong Pasir flat

SINGAPORE – A teenager was charged on Aug 14 after he was found with allegedly three etomidate-laced Kpods in a Potong Pasir Housing Board flat on March 6. Kpods are vapes that contain vape juice mixed with potent ingredients such as etomidate or ketamine. Used in hospitals to induce sedation during medical procedures, etomidate is meant to be injected into the veins under clinical supervision and is never intended to be inhaled. When vaped, it enters the lungs directly and may trigger spasms, breathing difficulties, seizures and even psychosis. The 19-year-old youth is also accused of having three disposable vaporisers in the same flat that day. Court documents stated that he allegedly had a vaporiser there on Jan 17, 2022. He was just 16 years old on April 24, 2022, when he purportedly had an e-cigarette device in Bayfront Link. In September 2023, he allegedly published an advertisement on Instagram showing multiple vaping items for sale, including one resembling a cassette tape. He is accused of being in possession of four disposable e-cigarette devices in the Potong Pasir flat the following month. Besides vaping-related offences, the teenager is also accused of pushing an alleged male victim and pulling his hair outside a school on Sept 16, 2023. The youth is also said to have consumed methamphetamine on or before June 4, 2024. Between May and June that year, he allegedly showed knuckle dusters for sale on messaging platform Telegram. He was in Woodlands Avenue 1 in the wee hours of June 4, 2024, when he purportedly had five knuckle dusters and two bottles of pepper spray. The teenager, who was said to have a provisional driving licence, is also accused of unlawfully riding a motorcycle along Bidadari Park Drive shortly before 6.40pm in July that year. Among other things, he allegedly rode the vehicle without the supervision of a person holding an instructor's licence. Separately, the youth was in the Potong Pasir flat when he allegedly had a knuckle duster on March 6, 2025. His pretrial conference will take place on Aug 18.
