Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer among Joel Klatt's top QBs in college football
New Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer has played one full season of college football. That season went so well that Mateer is earning legitimate All-American talk this spring.
On a new team. In a new conference. He's that's highly thought of.

On Monday, FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt released its ranking of the top 10 quarterbacks in the country going into the 2025 season. Texas' Archie Manning, Miami's Carson Beck and Penn State's Drew Allar's listing was no great surprise. Beck captured two national championships at Georgia. Manning's genetics, combined with some time on-field, made him a clear choice. And Allar is ranked third in Nittany Lions history in touchdowns, with an outside chance to set the school record this season.
Mateer is the least known quantity but ranked ahead of two of those names, third overall. Despite the limited experience, his 2024 season at Washington State drew plenty of interest when he hit the transfer portal.
"He is really talented as a thrower," Klatt said. "He is athletic and quietly put up one of the best quarterback years in the country. Now, he's going to enter the spotlight. So now he goes down to Oklahoma, he goes to the SEC, and yes, that's a jump, there's no doubt. But he brings his offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle with him. So he's not going to learn a new system and in a lot of ways that should pay dividends for Mateer."

"He's got a big arm," Klatt continued. "He can run it. He's a dual-threat guy. He was the only quarterback last year to average over 250 yards through the air throwing the football and 50 yards on the ground in every game."
Klatt went on to say that based on the film, Mateer was one of the 10 best quarterbacks in college football last year and expects him to be one of the five best in the country in 2025.
Mateer led FBS in total touchdowns last year, throwing for 29 and rushing for 15 more. He threw for 3,139 yards and ran for another 826. The 3,965 total yards ranked fourth in the country, behind only two players who received Heisman Trophy votes, Cam Ward at Miami and Spencer McCord at Syracuse, and Ole Miss' Jaxon Dart.

The Southeastern Conference was responsible for five of the top 10 spots on Klatt's list. Manning ranked No. 2, LSU's Garrett Nussmeier ranked fifth, Florida's DJ Lagway ranked sixth and South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers ranked eighth. The No. 1 quarterback in the country, according to Klatt, a former quarterback himself, is Clemson signal-caller Cade Klubnik.
The Mateer era begins at OU on August 30 when the Sooners host FCS Illinois State in Norman.

When was the last time there was a Triple Crown winner?
Winning the Triple Crown is one of the hardest achievements in all of American sports. It's earned by racehorses who win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes all in the same year. Only 13 horses have accomplished such a feat in 150 years of racing. There won't be a 14th name added to that list this year, as Sovereignty won the Kentucky Derby and Journalism took home the Preakness. That means Justify will continue his seven-year run as the most recent Triple Crown winner. Jockeyed by Mike Smith and trained by Bob Baffert, Justify beat Gronkowski to win the 150th running of the Belmont Stakes and the Triple Crown in 2018. Justify began his racing career on Feb. 18, a scant 77 days before the Derby. He won his first three races by a combined 19 lengths, making Baffert a believer. The big chestnut colt with the appetite to match burst onto the national scene with a 2½-length victory on a sloppy track in the Derby. Two weeks later, he survived a challenge in the fog-shrouded Preakness, winning by a half-length, again in the slop to set up a Triple Crown try. On a cloudy 80-degree day at Belmont Park, Justify proved a cool customer. He didn't flinch when greeted by 90,327 roaring fans as he walked onto the track. He stood so quietly in the starting gate that Smith wondered if he'd respond when it sprang open. Did he ever? Justify led all the way in achieving one of the sports world's toughest feats 45 years to the day that Secretariat won the Belmont by a record 31 lengths. Baffert called Justify one of the all-time greats. For the 2025 Belmont Stakes, Baffert trained a horse named Rodriguez. Rodriguez is 6-to-1 odds to win the race. Journalism, winner of the Preakness, is an 8-5 favorite, while Sovereignty, winner of the Derby, has 2-1 odds to win. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Bills' QB Remains Boogeyman For AFC East Rivals
Bills' QB Remains Boogeyman For AFC East Rivals originally appeared on Athlon Sports. First it was Tom Brady. Now, it's Josh Allen. The AFC East as a division has had a "boogeyman" of sorts over the last few decades. And the Buffalo Bills' signal-caller Allen has been the man man in the division for the last five seasons. Advertisement Buffalo is looking for a sixth-straight AFC East title this year. Allen, as the reigning league MVP going into 2025, is a key reason why. How "scary'' is he? Allen is 23-11 against the rest of the division as a starting quarterback. Those may not be Brady-like numbers, but they certainly show how good Allen has been over the last few years in the division. It's also why Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report highlighted Allen as the "main obstacle facing every NFL starting quarterback in 2025," for the Miami Dolphins specifically. While he acknowledged that health was a major concern for Miami, the Bills and Allen were a big part of it. Advertisement "Kind of obvious, right? But it's got to be that or the Buffalo Bills," Gagnon said. Miami, incredibly, is just 2-15 in their last 17 games against Allen and the Bills. It won't get any easier this season, either. Oh, and note this: It's also not like the rest of the division hasn't struggled against Buffalo. As the Bills prepare for a run at a Super Bowl this season, winning the division is always the first step. And with where Allen stands, it seems like he's in a position to win a sixth-straight division title going into the 2025 season. ... because he's the new bogeyman. Police arrested former New York Jets linebacker and current FOX NFL broadcaster Jonathan Vilma this week in Miami, Florida, for driving with a suspended license, according to reporter Andy Slater. Advertisement Vilma, 43, was originally stopped because his tag had expired. He had a 10-year career playing in the league, spending his first four seasons with the New York Jets beginning in 2004 when he won the league's Defensive Rookie of the Year honor. He then joined the New Orleans Saints in the 2008 season after the Jets traded him, becoming an integral piece on the defense that defeated the Indianapolis Colts in Super XLIV in the 2010 season. Vilma has spent the last five seasons as a color analyst on FOX NFL broadcasts while also contributing to college football productions since joining the media sphere. Advertisement The network has released any comment at this time and Vilma's status for the upcoming season is not yet known in the aftermath of this incident. The Jets selected Vilma in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft and No. 12 overall. He played a total of 55 games with the team, not missing a contest through his first three seasons. He ended his career with 872 total tackles, 10.5 sacks, 10 fumble recoveries and 12 interceptions. Vilma's success at the professional level stems from a decorated collegiate campaign at the University of Miami (FL), including First-Team All-American recognition in 2003. He is currently a candidate for the 2026 College Football Hall of Fame class.
