Spain to Host 2027 Champions League Final at Atlético Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium

Daily Tribune20-05-2025

Spain has officially been awarded hosting rights for the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, with the showpiece match set to be staged at Atlético Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium.
Spanish Sports Minister Pilar Alegría confirmed the news on Tuesday, marking a major win for Spanish football and the city of Madrid. The final will return to Spain for the first time since 2019, when Liverpool defeated Tottenham at the same venue.
Opened in 2017, the Metropolitano has quickly established itself as one of Europe's premier football venues, with a capacity of over 68,000 and world-class infrastructure. It previously hosted the 2019 Champions League final and has been home to numerous high-profile domestic and international fixtures.
'This is a great recognition of our ability to host world-class sporting events,' Alegría said. 'The Metropolitano is a modern, iconic stadium that represents the passion Spain has for football.'
The announcement reinforces UEFA's trust in Spain's hosting capabilities and comes as the country gears up for a co-hosting role in the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco.

Tottenham closing in on Brentford's Frank in search for new manager

Brentford manager Thomas Frank is the man Tottenham have targeted to replace Ange Postecoglou, according to multiple reports yesterday. Postecoglou was dismissed after two seasons in charge on Friday despite ending Spurs' 17- year trophy drought by winning the Europa League last month. Frank, who has been in charge of the Bees since 2018, led Brentford back to the top flight in 2021 after an absence of 74 years and has established the west London club in the Premier League. Hiring the Dane, whose contract runs until 2027, would cost Spurs around £10 million ($14 million) in compensation. The BBC reported that a formal approach from Tottenham is expected in the coming days. Spurs will play in the Champions League next season thanks to their Europa League success in Bilbao, where they Manchester United 1-0.

Inter Milan hire Chivu as new coach

AFP | Milan Inter Milan have chosen Cristian Chivu to lead the Serie A club into a new era, confirming the former Romania defender as Simone Inzaghi's replacement ahead of the upcoming Club World Cup. Still reeling from humiliation at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, Inter have gambled on novice Chivu after failing to get Cesc Fabregas from Como. 'Inter Milan is pleased to welcome Cristian Chivu as the new head coach of the first team. The coach has signed a contract with Inter until 30 June 2027,' Inter said in a statement. Chivu has agreed a deal with Inter worth a reported 2.5 million euros ($2.85 million) a season, taking charge of one of Europe's biggest clubs only a few months after beginning his senior coaching career with Parma. Parma confirmed Chivu's departure earlier yesterday, setting up his arrival at Inter where he won three Serie A titles and the 2010 Champions League as a player. Chivu was part of the iconic Inter team which won the treble under Jose Mourinho 15 years ago, a feat which the San Siro club tried and spectacularly failed to repeat this season.

Pochettino plays down Spurs return rumours

AFP | Washington USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino has played down rumors linking him with the vacant managerial position at his former club Tottenham Hotspur, following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou on Friday. Argentine Pochettino was in charge of Spurs for five years from 2014 and took the team to the Champions League final but never won a trophy with the North London club. Despite having signed a two year contract in September to lead the USA at the 2026 World Cup, which they are co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, Pochettino's name has appeared in bookmakers' lists of favourites for the Spurs job and in several UK reports. But asked on Saturday about the links, in his post-match press conference following the USA's 2-1 home friendly defeat to Turkey, Pochettino played down the talk. 'After I left in 2019, every time that I was free, and the place of the position of the manager or head coach in Tottenham Hotspur (was vacant), my name is appearing on the list,' Pochettino said. 'If you have seen the rumours, I think there are 100 coaches in the list. I think, don't be worried about that,' he added. Pochettino has talked in the past about his remaining affection for Spurs and has never ruled out the possibility of returning to the club at some point. But he suggested the timing was not right for a second chance with his old team. 'If something happened, you for sure you will see, but we cannot talk about this type of thing, because I think today, it's not real. It's not realistic. And look at where I am, where we are,' he said in the stadium press room in Hartford, Connecticut. 'And the thing is, the answer is so clear, no? But we're talking about it because it's my club, like Newells or Espanyol,' he added.
