I rode in a driverless Waymo in San Francisco and it was smarter than most human drivers

Indian Express2 days ago

A tinge of 'giddiness amid childish excitement': this is how I would describe my first-ever ride in a driverless car. Until now, I have only seen such technological marvels in Hollywood blockbusters Minority Report and I, Robot. And honestly, I never in my faintest imagination could picture myself being driven around by a robot. Ever since arriving in San Francisco, I have been eagerly waiting to hop into a Waymo robotaxi and go around town.
On a breezy June evening, after a long day with back-to-back sessions, it was finally time to unwind. Although I was unsure about the mode of transport, I was vaguely aware that there was a likelihood we would hail a Waymo. One of my team members fired up their Waymo One app, an application that resembles popular ride-hailing apps. The robotaxi was booked, and we waited by the kerb outside the hotel.
It is a Waymo, but it is also a Jaguar. Yes, the Waymos in San Francisco are Jaguar I-Pace, a battery-electric crossover by Jaguar Land Rover. Moments after spotting the car, we were inside it. The first thing I noticed was there was no one in the driver's seat.
'The driver's seat is off-limits, but feel free to sit in any other available seat,' reads the Waymo One rulebook. Also, Waymo One cars allow up to four passengers.
The app setup is fairly simple, and within minutes, you can look at your first ride on screen. My destination? Florella Noe, a pleasant Italian restaurant, was an outing planned by the team.
The app, much like Uber, shows the estimated time of arrival, street maps, and rates. All this while, I kept wondering, with a human driver, you wave or make eye contact. But what would you do with an autonomous car? Yes, you simply stand there and wait. Minutes later, the Waymo car pulled up smoothly. These cars stand out on the street due to their miniature domes on the roof, which are essentially dome-shaped lidar units with a host of sensors and cameras.
Once the car arrived, all it needed was to tap 'Unlock' on the app to open the car and get inside. Strangely, it felt a bit weird and calming at the same time. The car greeted us with a welcome message and some safety reminders. The car has cameras on the roof, all sides, and even inside. The passenger seat in the front also has a touchscreen where you can adjust music, see route details, etc.
Our journey began at the Intercontinental Hotel and continued to the Italian restaurant. It was a 15-minute ride, and Waymo got us to the spot just in time. As surreal as it feels, a driverless car made its way through the busy traffic of San Francisco, merging into the chaos just like any other car.
The ride went on smoothly with no big challenge en route. However, I could sense that I was sitting in a vehicle that was actually thinking for itself, as you could feel it stop and wait patiently for the signals or even a pedestrian to cross or another speeding car to pass by. Waymo managed all of it cautiously. It paused when needed and moved only once it was absolutely sure it was safe to proceed. For a moment, I felt it did much better than some human drivers I know.
It felt otherworldly to watch Waymo navigate intersections, obey traffic signals, and even slow down for cyclists and jaywalkers. It did not hurry through signals like most of us would; rather, it waited, calculated and moved with precision. It signalled fellow commuters properly and made gradual and wider turns. All of this indicated that the sensors on these cars were doing a remarkable job.
According to some recent reports, Waymo cars are rapidly evolving, albeit not just technologically. Reportedly, autonomous cars have begun to imitate human-like behaviour, including visible signs of impatience at pedestrian crossings.
According to researchers, in their observation, the cars began inching forward even before pedestrians had fully cleared the road. This is a trait that is often observed in rushed human drivers. This study was conducted by Professor William Riggs from the University of San Francisco and a reporter who noticed a peculiar way the Waymo car started rolling at a crossing.
'From an evolutionary standpoint, you're seeing a lot more anticipation and assertiveness from the vehicles,' Riggs was quoted as saying by The Daily Mail.
The Waymo robotaxi gathers information about the road conditions, fine-tuning its algorithm along the way. These cars are known to follow rules strictly, even at the cost of frustrating fellow drivers. According to the company, the new behaviour is deliberate. Waymo's product director, David Margines, told the publication that engineers are tweaking the vehicles to drive more assertively. This aims to make robotaxis more predictable and efficient in traffic, thereby reducing hesitancy.
Even though Waymo is proving to be a safer option, it does have a dark side. Autonomous taxis from Waymo have been involved in approximately 700 crashes since 2021, including incidents involving dogs and sensor failures. Not all incidents were Waymo's fault; many of these involved human driver errors or other factors. However, as they become more assertive, there is a new worry lingering, as some critics even fear that safety may be compromised, especially in edge cases where humans rely on judgement rather than rules.
India is no stranger to innovation, and while technology for driverless cars exists, we have our own unique set of challenges that could slow large-scale deployment compared to the US. In practical terms, Indian roads are diverse; their denominations differ from highways to roads to narrow lanes and countless unmarked roads. Our roads are frequently marred by obstructions such as vendors, livestock, parked vehicles, and, overall, an absence of lane discipline.
During my experience with Waymo, the on-road discipline was evident, as if everyone was following a rhythm. No speeding bikers were trying to overtake from either side; largely, vehicles of all sizes maintained lane decorum. On the contrary, on Indian roads, frequent obstructions could likely hinder AI systems from navigating reliably.
Another notable difference is that unlike in the US, many Indian roads may lack lane markings, operational traffic signals, or even standardised signage. Autonomous vehicles heavily rely on such details for decision-making. Also, ours is a mixed-traffic environment, meaning roads include cars, rickshaws, buses, bikes, carts, pedestrians, strays, etc. This absence of uniformity makes it difficult for AV algorithms that are mostly trained on datasets based on Western driving habits.
Robotaxis also require high-definition 3D maps, and with constant constructions and rerouting, even static maps may not be reliable at times. When it comes to connectivity, robotaxis depend on cloud connectivity for real-time updates and remote supervision. Patchy networks or poor bandwidth in certain areas may hinder performance or lead to safety concerns.
Besides, as of 2025, there is no clear regulatory framework for deploying driverless cars in India. Also, we have millions of people employed as drivers; widespread automation may disrupt livelihoods and likely lead to social resistance. When compared to China or the US, India currently lacks large-scale, homegrown players aggressively working on autonomous vehicle technologies. Regardless of the hurdles, there is optimism as many big players, such as Tata and Mahindra, are actively exploring the technology.
Self-driving cars tend to trigger a wide range of opinions. While some see them as the start of a dystopian future where mankind is bereft of jobs, others see it as a safe and smarter alternative to human error behind the wheel. For a city like San Francisco, where people spend hours commuting each day, self-driving cars are proving to be transformative. It helps many reclaim time spent driving to continue working or unwind from a long day. Although job displacement is a real concern, the upside is often lucrative. If vehicles like these can navigate safely and consistently without any distractions, then there is a lot more waiting to be explored.

Stellantis offers voluntary redundancy scheme at Turin plant

Stellantis has started a voluntary redundancy plan for 610 workers at its Mirafori plant in Turin, Italy, after introducing the scheme at other Italian facilities, the automaker said on Monday. Stellantis is so far cutting up to 1,600 staff in total across Italy this year through the voluntary redundancy scheme. At Mirafori, the scheme "is aimed at supporting early retirement or different career opportunities," a company spokesperson said, adding workers at Mirafori can sign up for it until the end of July. The Mirafori plant will have a stable workforce from August to prepare for the launch of the new hybrid version of the Fiat 500 city car, the spokesperson said. Full-scale production of the new model is expected to start in November. Luigi Paone of Uilm, one of the unions which agreed the voluntary redundancy plan with Stellantis, said it would be aimed at workers closer to retirement age. The plan "should serve to pave the way for the hiring of young workers as we approach the production start-up of the hybrid 500," Paone said. Between April and May Stellantis agreed similar packages at other assembly plants in Italy, including Melfi and Pomigliano, for a total workforce reduction of up to 1,660 workers this year. The company has fewer than 40,000 staff in Italy, down from 55,000 in early 2021 when the group was created through the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot maker PSA.

Motherson's Marelli takeover faces US hedge fund bump

Samvardhana Motherson is bracing for battle with US distressed debt hedge fund Strategic Value Partners (SVP) over the acquisition of Marelli Holdings , a Japanese car parts supplier owned by private equity group KKR & Co, said people aware of the matter. The Vivek Chaand Sehgal-led Indian company is said to be raising a $2 billion war chest for the deal. The board of cash-strapped Marelli, together with a special committee of its warring lenders, are meeting this week, possibly within 24 hours, to decide on the future of the company that's on the verge of bankruptcy. SVP is an existing lender of Marelli, while Motherson Group has set up 50:50 joint ventures with the company in India since 2008, for components such as automotive lighting and shock absorbers. Marelli began in 2019 after Japanese auto component maker Calsonic Kansei, a KKR portfolio company, acquired Italian business Magneti Marelli. Calsonic Kansei had been loaded with 1.1 trillion yen in debt and about 700 billion yen of that was used to finance the purchase. The company underwent debt restructuring in 2022, with haircuts close to 40per cent , after revenue plummeted during the pandemic. KKR then wrote off close to $2 billion and injected a further $650 million that helped the company to turn the bend in the short term with improved operating income in 2024 over 2023. It's unlikely to infuse more equity into the business, said the people cited. DIP Financing Motherson, India's largest auto component maker, has been in discussions with global banks including HSBC and Barclays to arrange the money under a special financial framework called 'debtor in possession' or DIP financing, applicable for bankrupt companies in the US, said the people mentioned above. A DIP is a business or an individual that has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection but still holds property to which creditors have a legal claim under a lien or other security interest. A DIP may also continue to do business using those assets. If successful, this will be Motherson's largest buyout. However, any offer will need the approval of a majority of Marelli's lenders. Lender vs Lender There are two consortiums of lenders in Marelli, each holding about 50per cent of the debt. One is Japanese, led by Mizuho and including the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. The international consortium is led by SVP, New York private equity group Fortress Investment, MBK Partners and Deutsche Bank. SVP holds 29per cent , giving it significant influence over decisions. The lenders are rolling over on a month-by-month basis nearly $122.4 million (18 billion yen) of debt due for repayment, according to the people cited. The company's total debt outstanding is $4.4-4.5 billion. Gross revenue stood at $11.6 billion (10.7 billion euros). In comparison, Motherson Group's gross revenue was $25.7 billion in FY25. Since late last year, the SVP consortium has been proposing packages that involve infusing fresh capital, including an equity injection of around $690 million (100 billion yen). But these came with the caveat that new loans and old borrowings from those participating in the round would be made senior to other debt under a special mechanism called 'up-tiering.' Such rejigs are common in distressed situations in the US and Europe, but not in Japan. Thus, Mizuho and the other Japanese creditors have been opposed to it. Motherson's Counter To break the deadlock, Marelli had approached several suitors, including Motherson Group, late in 2024, said the people mentioned above. A fortnight ago, Motherson submitted an alternative financial package to revive Marelli, which has been hit by a drop in demand from key customers such as Nissan and Stellantis. The former is believed to account for nearly 30per cent of Marelli's business. Under the proposal, KKR will write off 100per cent of its shareholding in Marelli and transfer its shares to Motherson. The Indian company would also purchase new Marelli shares for around $700 million. Additionally, existing lenders would sell debt worth $4.4 billion at 20per cent of value. Emergency financing of $345 million extended by a few Japanese banks to Marelli would be acquired at face value. The package also included new equity funding of $1.94 billion. After the capital infusion, Motherson would become the seniormost lender under the DIP mechanism. In the event of a liquidation, under US bankruptcy guidelines, Motherson would get the entire sum back. If the value realised is more than the amount Motherson deployed, then the Indian company would be the first to get paid in full, with interest. Any residual amount would be distributed among the others. Similarly, if the company voluntarily opted for Chapter 11, Motherson also would get an opportunity to bid. In the event it's outbid, the company will get its money back. 'The company evaluates various strategic opportunities globally for its growth and expansion of its business,' a Samvardhana Motherson International spokesperson said. 'At this stage, there is no material event that requires disclosure.' The lenders had to firm up their decision by this weekend, said some of the existing stakeholders of the company. There is a mandatory window of at least 10 business days to consider such rehabilitation plans. According to people directly involved, the Japanese banks and the company have been supportive of the Motherson package, but the deadlock among lenders continues as the SVP-backed group wasn't keen. One of the sources said at least 7-8 OEMs that source parts from Marelli, including Volkswagen , Honda, Stellantis Daimler, GM, Nissan etc. have also voiced support for Motherson proposal due to the synergies involved. This could not be independently verified. A Marelli spokesperson declined to respond to specific queries. 'We remain focused on executing our strategy and delivering on our commitments,' the company said. 'Marelli is in active discussions with lenders to secure additional financing to address a temporary working capital gap. We continue to operate as normal while these discussions are ongoing. We remain confident in our ability to reach an outcome that ensures Marelli continues delivering the best advanced solutions for its customers.' Mails to Mizuho, SVP did not get a response till press time Monday. SVP Bounces Back People in the know said SVP consortium has further sweetened its offer in the last few days, featuring much higher equity capital infusion. Details are sketchy, but they said some key Japanese lenders may support this. Even so, the company is expected to voluntarily file for Chapter 11 to restructure its long-term liabilities while continuing the business. In such an eventuality, Motherson will get a 45-50 day window to revise its offer within the 'overbid period,' during which potential buyers can submit higher offers than the initial 'stalking horse' or preliminary bid. The company is planning to do so, said people working with the New Delhi-headquartered group. 'If the board, lenders agree to go with the SVP offer, Motherson will pause its fund raising and come up with an improved offer instead,' said one of the persons cited. 'It is confident that compared to a hedge fund, it has a better prospect to acquire and run a company as vast and complex as Marelli… It has been in the market for sale for a long time but has not found any takers. Additionally, the business synergies are very strong and has a track record of being a turnaround specialist world over.'
