Olympic biathlon champion confirmed dead after Pakistan mountaineering accident
Germany's two-time Olympic biathlon gold medallist Laura Dahlmeier was confirmed dead aged 31 on Wednesday after being hit by falling rocks on a Pakistani mountain.
The dangerous nature of the site made rescue efforts "impossible", her agency said in a statement issued on Wednesday, which confirmed her death.
"Rescue efforts to recover her failed and the operation was suspended," the statement continued.
The accident happened around midday on Monday at an altitude of 5,700 metres (18,700 feet) on Laila Peak in the Karakoram range, according to a statement from her team on her official social media pages.
Dahlmeier's climbing partner was able to sound the alarm after reaching safety.
"It was determined that a helicopter rescue is not possible," Areeb Ahmed Mukhtar, a senior local official in Ghanche district, where the more than 6,000 metre mountain is located, told AFP earlier on Wednesday.
"The conditions at the altitude where she was injured are extremely challenging," he added.

Shipton Trek & Tours Pakistan, which organised the expedition, confirmed the ground rescue by a team of four that includes three Americans and a German mountaineer.
Dahlmeier was "hit by falling rocks," her team said on Tuesday, adding no one had yet been able to reach her due to the danger of further rockfalls and the site's "remoteness".
Muhammad Ali, a local disaster management official, told AFP that weather conditions have been "extremely harsh" in the region for the past week, with rain, strong winds and thick clouds.
Dahlmeier, an experienced mountaineer, had been in the region since the end of June and had already ascended the Great Trango Tower.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued a statement on Wednesday calling Dahlmeier "an ambassador for our country around the world (and) a role model for peaceful, joyful, and fair coexistence across borders."
She won seven world championship gold medals, and at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang she became the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit at the same Games.
Dahlmeier retired from professional competition in 2019 at the age of 25.
She went on to become a commentator on biathlon events for German broadcaster ZDF, and also took up mountaineering.
She was a certified mountain and ski guide and an active member of the mountain rescue, according to her team.

ECB bans ex-Pak players' agent Mughees

An independent anti-corruption tribunal of the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) has sentenced him for allegedly offering a bribe to a coach, which he has denied, indicating that he may pursue legal action. Details reveal that Mughees Ahmed Sheikh was the head of the International Cricketers Association (ICA), representing players in the past such as Saim Ayub, Aamer Jamal, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Abdullah Shafique, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Hasnain, Naseem Shah, Nauman Ali, Sahibzada Farhan, Sajid Khan, Shadab Khan, Sufiyan Muqeem, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Haris, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Usama Mir, and others. The tribunal acknowledged that there was no evidence of match-fixing or betting. The allegation was that he offered a coach a share of his commission if the coach selected players represented by him for foreign franchise tournaments. He maintains his innocence, claiming that the allegation is baseless and reflects the vengeful behavior of one person. He mentioned that all his records, including bank statements and messages on his mobile phone, were thoroughly examined during the investigation, but nothing was found to substantiate the claims. The tribunal prioritized the coach's statement, despite the fact that the coach has not been associated with any team or franchise since then, raising serious questions about the practical significance of the allegation. He stated that he has distanced himself from any position or activity within the International Cricketers Association (ICA) and has never been involved in any form of fixing, bribery, or corruption, considering all appropriate legal actions to clear his name. Meanwhile, sources indicate that many star cricketers had already severed ties with the ICA months ago, and Aaqib Javed, the director of high performance, is no longer associated with the company. Obeid, 41, was killed Wednesday when Israeli forces "targeted people waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip", the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) said in a statement. With Gaza in the throes of a hunger crisis, the UN rights office said last month that Israeli forces had killed more than 1,300 Palestinians trying to get food aid in the territory since late May. An ex-star of the Khadamat Al-Shati club in Gaza, Obeid played 24 international matches for team Palestine, the PFA said. "During his long career, Al-Obeid scored more than 100 goals, making him one of the brightest stars of Palestinian football," it added. The midfielder also played for the Al-Amari Youth Center Club in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967. While living there in 2010, Obeid was among six players on the national team from Gaza who were turned back at the Jordanian border for "security reasons" on their way to a friendly in Mauritania. An Israeli security official said at the time that the players had failed to renew special permits allowing them to play in the West Bank. "When I heard that we would be forbidden from travelling I was very upset, because any athlete dreams of wearing his national jersey in international forums," Obeid told AFP in 2010. "We want to be able to travel freely with our families, just like athletes anywhere else in the world." Israel had previously allowed the six players to travel with the team. Born in Gaza City, Obeid was married and had five children. Since the start of the Gaza war, triggered by Palestinian militant group Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel, 662 people from the sport and scouting sector have been killed, including 321 in the football community, according to the PFA. Israel's offensive has killed at least 61,258 in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry. The 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
