An unexpected royal just majorly defended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Cosmopolitan18-07-2025
For those not fully up to speed on the royal family's drama, let's have a quick recap: back in January 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they would be 'stepping down' from their roles as senior working members of the royal family, amid cruel stories about Meghan from the tabloids. Later, they headed off to start anew in California with their son, Archie, later joined by daughter Lilibet, explaining they wanted to live a less public-facing life.
Following on from this, the couple embarked on a range of solo endeavours, from Prince Harry's tell-all book Spare (which was sadly less than complimentary about his family, notably his brother Prince William) to Meghan's lifestyle brand, As Ever.
One key issue at the heart of the rift has been Harry's push to have his high-level security reinstated, something he lost access to after stepping down from his royal working life (and which he argued was unfair, as his personal risk as a public figure had not decreased, but which the courts ultimately did not support).
This, Harry has explained on multiple occasions, is part of what stops him and Meghan from visiting the UK on a regular basis.
Now, an unexpected royal has spoken up in defence of Meghan and Harry – and their security predicament – with Princess Delphine of Belgium airing her sympathies on the It's Reigning Men podcast, which discusses all-things royal.
Speaking to host Daniel Rosney, Princess Delphine said, "I think there is this thing about security. I think it's to do with what happened to his mother. I understand the guy. He's just traumatised."
She added, "I understand, so he's doing these things, and everybody's bullying him, but not thinking about his trauma and I just find it terrible because he's just been kind of left."
The Princess also fondly recalled Prince Harry's late mother, Princess Diana, who she said was a "part of my life when I was in England".
"She had these children and everything, and then this death was just horrible," Delphine, who is an artist and known for her fashion flair, expanded. "Especially seeing these two children left by a very, I thought, natural, nice, normal motherly woman.
"They lost such an important figure, and I feel very sorry for Harry because I think that was traumatic for him. William didn't have a choice. I think Harry suffered so much, and I think he was traumatised and it's coming out now."
Far from having an ordinary life herself, Delphine has also had a difficult experience with the press; growing up, she was seen as an illegitimate child of King Albert II, who had an affair with her mother. It took her two decades of fighting to be recognised by a DNA test, in order to prove her paternity.
As you might imagine, after her story broke the press intrusion was intense – much like it has been for Meghan and Harry.
Elsewhere, it's said that King Charles' personal team had a productive conversation and with a member of staff for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and Meghan recently hinted she was posted out a sweet birthday gift to Queen Camilla, so perhaps there's a proper reconciliation to be had after all.

Previously, Ellis Digital's social media manager, Caitlin Jardin, shared her opinion regarding the product launch. The expert believed fans might feel Meghan Markle might be 'going against her core' of As Ever's values, centered around wellness. Meghan Markle announces As Ever rosé despite past issues with other products Meghan Markle recently declared the restock of her lifestyle brand, As Ever's rosé wine. The new batch will be a 2024 Napa Valley rosé, as the Duchess of Sussex revealed in the email newsletter from her brand released on July 30. Per People magazine, the newsletter read, 'We hope you've been having a beautiful summer — enjoying the adventure of travel or the calm of home, finding beauty in the little things, and perhaps trying something new.' The newsletter mentioned positive feedback on As Ever's first batch of rosé wine, a 2023 Napa Valley rosé. The brand dropped the batch on July 1, selling out within an hour. The newsletter added, 'You'll want to clink glasses with friends as the sun sets, toasting to a summer of joy.' 'Barefoot or in sandals, dressed up or dressed down, this rosé may become your favorite accessory for alfresco lunches and dinners at dusk.' it continued. Most Americans Were Never Interested in Meghan Markle Podcasting

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Meghan Markle's struggle to break through with her business podcast Confessions of a Female Founder may in part be explained by polling conducted at the time she first signed with Spotify. The Duchess of Sussex has now chalked up two podcasts: Archetypes, about sexist slurs, and Confessions of a Female Founder, which featured interviews about prominent women who run companies. The first made waves when she dished about the royal family in the early episodes but sunk in the charts in later shows when she steered clear of the palace soap opera. DOMINIC LIPINSKI/AFP via Getty Images The second had nothing do with the monarchy and struggled to make an impact beyond the first episode. That may in reality be no surprise as polling as far back as 2020 suggests Americans may simply never have been particularly interested in Prince Harry and Meghan podcasting. Why It Matters Meghan launched a flurry of new projects in 2025 but had a rough ride among critics for both her Netflix cooking show and Confessions, which were both tied to her own business As Ever, which launched in April. Now the first phase of those ventures is over, she will have a chance to take stock and consider what is working well and what could do with a revamp. What to Know Polling agency YouGov asked 5,400 U.S. adults in December 2020 how much interest they would have in listening to Harry and Meghan's podcasts. Just 8 percent said they were "very interested" while 53 percent said they were "not at all interested." And 16 percent were "not very interested" while 15 percent were "somewhat interested." This adds up to a total of 69 percent falling on the side of disinterest compared to 23 percent who expressed interest. At the time, they had just signed their Spotify deal but no specific shows had been publicly revealed and in the end it would be a year-and-a-half before Archetypes dropped. It was, though, also a time when they had not been giving interviews and therefore media appetite to hear what they had to say was far higher than now. The Oprah Winfrey interview, for example, was still months away and was not even known about in December 2020. In that respect, Harry and Meghan's reputations in America were still mostly uncontroversial bar a run-in with Donald Trump after they commented on the presidential election he lost to Joe Biden. Some might, therefore, by tempted to conclude that Meghan should not take the lukewarm response to her podcast to heart and simply focus on other more successful projects. What Happens Next Meghan's As Ever online shop has sold out all three of its product runs in mere minutes but more produce is expected to drop this summer, specifically a sparkling wine. Season 2 of her Netflix show With Love, Meghan is also due out in the fall, while the Netflix deal itself is due to run out in September. As yet, a new deal has not been signed and The Sun and People both reported Netflix does not intend to renew it. Time will tell whether some continuation of the partnership gets renegotiated or not. Meghan Markle Debuts First As Ever Rosé on Princess Diana's Birthday

Meghan Markle officially launched the first alcoholic offering of her lifestyle brand, As Ever, debuting its 2023 Napa Valley Rosé on Tuesday — a meaningful date for both her and Prince Harry. July 1 is notably the late Princess Diana's birthday. The date also marks the beginning of Prince Harry's and Markle's relationship. In his memoir, 'Spare,' published in 2023, Prince Harry revealed he started talking to Markle via Instagram on July 1, 2016, what would have been Diana's 55th birthday. The couple ultimately married on May 19, 2018. This rosé is a curated blend inspired by Provençal-style wines and sourced from Napa Valley. Its pale blush color offers roundness and depth, featuring gentle minerality and soft stone fruit notes with a lasting finish. The blend includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah varietals. Priced at $30 a bottle and sold in sets of three bottles ($90), half case ($159), and full case ($300), the rosé is available for purchase exclusively at Markle first announced the release of the rosé on June 20, accompanied by As Ever's summer drop, which introduced two new products: an Apricot Spread, priced at $9, and an Orange Blossom Honey, retailing at $28, which features floral notes and citrus undertones. Markle launched the As Ever brand, a reconfiguration of her initial American Riviera Orchard label, in February. ''As ever' means 'as it's always been' or some even say 'in the same way as always,'' Markle wrote on her Instagram back then. 'If you've followed along since my days of creating The Tig, you'll know this couldn't be truer for me. This new chapter is an extension of what has always been my love language, beautifully weaving together everything I cherish — food, gardening, entertaining, thoughtful living and finding joy in the everyday.'
