Brian Cox: 'I was transfixed by actress's stockings and called 'darling' on my Dundee Rep debut'

The Courier19-07-2025
Brian Cox has recalled being 'transfixed' as he watched an actress's stockings slide down her leg during his first-ever stage appearance at the old Dundee Rep Theatre.
As the Emmy-winning Dundee born and bred star of Succession returns to his theatrical roots in Make It Happen, he's spoken with warmth and candour about his formative years as a teenager at the theatre, dating back to the early 1960s.
'The first thing I ever did was a play called The Dover Road,' Brian recalled in an interview with The Courier.
'I was just a wee boy – maybe 15 or 16 – and I was playing a servant.
'I was standing behind a girl, a bona fide actress, and I remember her stockings hadn't been done up properly.
'Slowly, they just came down her leg. I was transfixed!' he laughed.
Cox, now 79, is back on the modern day South Tay Street stage more than 60 years after first setting foot in the Rep's original venue on Nicoll Street.
That theatre – which tragically burned down on Cox's 17th birthday, June 1 1963 – holds a sacred place in his heart.
'The Rep was my salvation,' he said.
'I left school at 15. My school was a disaster – St Michael's Junior Secondary – designed to send me into the building trade.
'I was meant to be a brickie. But I wanted something different. I wanted to be in the theatre.'
It was in the old Nicoll Street building that Cox found not only his craft but his sense of belonging.
'I remember coming into the front of the theatre and this wifie in the box office said, 'You cannae get to the front fae the front, son – you've got tae go tae the back,'' he chuckled.
'So I did. And as I came in the back, I walked into a row between two actors.
'One of them was Nicol Williamson – a big name back then – and they were knocking hell out of each other. I just wanted to get past them and upstairs.'
Another unexpected moment was waiting at the top of the stairs.
'There was this guy, just smoking away, and he looked at me and said, 'Are you alright, darling?'
'I thought, bloody hell, this is the place for me. Chaos downstairs, affection upstairs. That contrast – it stayed with me.'
During his two years at the Rep, Cox immersed himself in all aspects of theatre life.
'I lived there,' he said. 'I used to sleep under the stage. Never went home to my mum in Tullideph Road.
'I hated where we'd moved to on Brown Constable Street, so I stayed in the theatre.'
Those early performances weren't without hiccups.
'One time I had to serve food on stage,' he recalled.
'I got white sauce on my sleeve and leaned across the lead actor – splashed it all over him.
'Another time I dropped a bit of fish on the floor and thought, 'Nobody's looking' – there's a full audience in – and I slapped it back on the plate!' he laughed.
The old Dundee Rep may have burned down in 1963, but the fire it lit in Cox never dimmed.
After stints performing in temporary venues, he left Dundee to attend drama school in London.
It was the beginning of an illustrious journey that would eventually see him become a star of stage and screen, win a Golden Globe and command stages from Broadway to the West End.
Cox has returned to Dundee Rep several times since, notably in 1994 with The Master Builder and a special 'Evening With' event.
He's now proud to be a patron of the theatre that launched his life.
'Yes, the Rep was great for me. It was my home,' he said.
'When it burned down, I was heartbroken. Theatre has given me everything.'
His latest return to the Rep – starring in Make It Happen as the spirit of Scottish economist Adam Smith, a powerful new production celebrating resilience and creativity – feels like a full-circle moment for the veteran actor.
'I just fell in love with the job,' he said.
'That was my vocation. And I was so lucky to be welcomed here – to be part of something. I've never forgotten that.'
Brian Cox, who recently called on Dundee's city father to 'sort the f***ing High Street out' in a Courier interview, appears in Make It Happen at Dundee Rep from July 18 to July 26.
Dundee Rep artistic director Andrew Panton confirmed that Cox has been living up to his 'sweary reputation' in the rehearsal room.
Brian is also set to host another special one-man Evening With Brian Cox' event at the Caird Hall this October.
After Dundee Rep, Make It Happen, a co-production with the National Theatre of Scotland, runs at the Edinburgh International Festival.

Sydney Chandler describes experience on the Alien: Earth TV series as ‘a joy'

The 29-year-old American actress plays Wendy, a humanoid robot with human consciousness, in Emmy-winning producer Noah Hawley's new series based on the acclaimed franchise. The Alien franchise began with Sir Ridley Scott's 1979 film starring Sigourney Weaver as warrant officer Ellen Ripley, who takes on an extra-terrestrial lifeform called the Xenomorph. The new eight-episode series sees Wendy and a group of tactical soldiers make a discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet's greatest threat. Chandler, who starred in Olivia Wilde's psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling and Danny Boyle's miniseries Pistol, about the Sex Pistols, said she was lucky to have such a supportive cast for her first lead role. 'I felt like every day I was showing up to an incredible acting class,' Chandler told the PA news agency. 'I'm new to this game, and so it was just a joy to be able to work with such a supportive and such a giving cast who were there to play.' Speaking of her character, she said: 'There's so many layers to her and she's just a juicy character to jump into. 'I did as much prep as you can for a character, there's no research you could do. 'I really found my character once I started working off everybody.' Alien: Earth is set in the year 2120, when the Earth is governed by five corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold. In this corporate era, cyborgs and synthetics, which are humanoid robots with artificial intelligence, exist alongside humans, but the world is changed when the founder of the Prodigy corporation unlocks a technological advance: hybrids (humanoid robots infused with human consciousness). Wendy, the first hybrid prototype, marks a new advance in the race for immortality and after Weyland-Yutani's spaceship collides into Prodigy City, Wendy and the other hybrids encounter new and terrifying life forms. The cast includes Deadwood actor Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh, Black Mirror star Alex Lawther as Hermit, Mary And George's Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier, Guerrilla actor Babou Ceesay as Morrow and Bottom star Adrian Edmondson as Atom Eins. Blenkin said the filming experience was made a lot easier due to Hawley's practical approach to special effects. 'We were lucky on this show because we're not doing much acting with tennis balls or anything like that that you do in a show where there's a lot of CGI,' the 29-year-old actor explained. 'Noah was really intent upon everything being practical. 'There's no acting required when Cameron, the vegan New Zealander, is wearing a Xenomorph suit and is leering over you and drooling, and it's animatronic and it's real. 'It was just a joy. We turn into kids on those sets.' Hawley, who is best known for creating the Fargo TV series, said the 'imperfections of reality are scarier than the sort of bloodlessness of computer-generated images'. 'All I'm trying to do is create the same feelings that you had when you watched Ridley's film or James Cameron's film,' the 57-year-old writer and director explained. 'Some of that we're able to achieve in new ways, but some of it is literally going back to the original cinema of optical illusions.' Alien: Earth will launch on Disney+ on August 13.

Spooks star Hugh Laurie cast as Harry Potter's Lord Voldemort in new series

Hugh Laurie and Matthew Macfadyen are amongst the stars to have been cast in new audiobook recordings of the Harry Potter series, almost 30 years on from initial publication Hugh Laurie and Matthew Macfadyen have been cast in a new Harry Potter audiobook series. It's been nearly 30 years since the first of JK Rowling's magical seven-book series was first published, and well over a decade since the film franchise that launched Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson to global superstardom came to an end. ‌ Now, as production takes place on a television series based on the original novels, it has been announced that an audio book series titled Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions is also in the works. ‌ Previously, the books were narrated by Stephen Fry but now his former comedy partner Hugh will be taking on the role of Hogwarts headmaster Professor Albus Dumbledore, who was played by both Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the films. ‌ Hugh said: "I'm honoured to have been trusted with the keys to Albus Dumbledore, and thrilled to be able to take him around the track of this beautiful incarnation by Pottermore and Audible." It comes after Mel B's 'spiritual' Moroccan wedding with non traditional dress. Speaking of those who have taken on the part before him, Hugh added: "I'm also deeply conscious of previous drivers Richard Harris, Michael Gambon, Jude Law and the iconic narrations by Jim Dale and m'colleague Stephen Fry. Just below the horizon, but headed our way, is the rough beast John Lithgow, his hour come round at last. This is great company, and it's a privilege to be among their number. ‌ Meanwhile, Matthew, who is known for having previously starred in Succession, will take on the role of key antagonist Lord Voldemort in the project. The pair of Hollywood stars are joining a cast of over 200 who will lend their voices to the characters to bring them to life in a new way. Riz Ahmed will play Professor Snape, a part made famous by the late Alan Rickman in the film series, and Michelle Gomez will voice Professor McGonagall whilst Cush Jumbo will play the narrator. ‌ Newcomers Frankie Treadaway, Max Lester, and Arabella Stanton will play the trio Harry, Ron and Hermione and see the characters through their first three years at Hogwarts' School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but Jaxon Knopf, Rhys Mulligan, and Nina Barker-Francis will take over for the final four audiobooks. Produced by Audible and Pottermore Publishing, the new audiobook series will include a full cast, original music and real-world sound capture to create an immersive audio experience. It comes shortly after the cast of the new series were photographed amongst the crew on set to film the first scenes upcoming HBO show. The actors were seen getting ready before the cameras start rolling. The show's star, Dominic, 11, was seen wearing a blue hooded jumper and a pair of round glasses – an accessory that has become synonymous with Harry Potter – as he filmed alongside the actors taking on the role as The Dursleys. Meanwhile, spoiled Dudley Dursley actor Amos Kitson was snapped wearing a shell suit jacket with cropped, wide sleeves which he matched with a pair of grey shell suit trousers with a blue stripe down the side. The actor posed for a photo taken on an iPad by a crew member, as Amos was seen giving the camera a grumpy expression as he appeared to get into character.
