Barcelona have a new La Masia star shining on tour. Introducing… Pedro Fernandez

New York Times2 days ago
It wasn't supposed to be like this. Few expected Barcelona's pre-season to be another marked by a new La Masia talent announcing themselves on a bigger stage.
Back in 2023, Fermin Lopez grabbed his moment. Last summer, Marc Bernal and Marc Casado shone brightest among a travelling squad that featured 16 Barca youth teamers. By contrast, this year, with practically all of the senior squad having been available since training resumed earlier in July, Hansi Flick's group for their tour of Japan and South Korea features just five.

But Pedro Fernandez — known as 'Dro', more on that later — is the latest to step up. Having already established himself as the sensation of Barca's first weeks of training back home, on Sunday, he produced a delightful 15-minute cameo in the club's opening game of a three-match trip, scoring the third goal in a 3-1 win over Vissel Kobe.
Alongside 18-year-old left-back Jofre Torrents, Fernandez was one of just two youth academy players to feature in the game, and while Torrents' involvement only came because Gerard Martin wasn't fully fit (there might now be a spot up for grabs as a backup to Alejandro Balde in that position), Dro's time on the pitch was entirely down to Flick's personal choice.
Fernandez, 17, spent most of last season with Barcelona's under-18 age group. He still has not made his debut with Barcelona Atletic — the club's reserve side that is essentially the first team of the youth academy. When he joined with the seniors for training for the first time this summer, some might have expected more established members of Barca Atletic, or the under-19 side that won last season's UEFA Youth League (as well as league and cup titles at domestic level), to have been promoted ahead of him.
Either way, he has definitely taken his chance. Sources from the backroom staff — who, like all those cited here, preferred to speak anonymously as they did not have permission to comment — say Barca's German manager Flick has been hugely impressed by Fernandez in pre-season. Then came his brilliantly taken goal in Sunday's 3-1 friendly win in Kobe.
'I didn't even know how to celebrate, to be honest,' Fernandez said after the match.
'It was unbelievable. I came in a bit nervous, the first time with the best club in the world, but then the ball came to my feet on the edge of the box and I gave it a go. Hansi and my team-mates calmed me down before the game and I felt so comfortable.

'Flick told me to do what I know to do with the ball, and then off the ball to push and press as hard as I can. Everyone has congratulated me for the goal, it's just unreal.'
Barcelona signed Fernandez in the summer of 2022, having monitored him for years. He was playing with his boyhood club, Val Minor, one of the most renowned youth teams in the north-west of Spain. Based in Nigran, Galicia, where Fernandez was born to a mum from the Philippines and a Spanish dad, footballers such as the Alcantara brothers, Thiago and Rafinha, as well as former Leeds forward Rodrigo Moreno and Liverpool's Stefan Bajcetic started out there, too.
Val Minor and Nigran are still very much close to his heart. This summer, before joining the Barca seniors for pre-season, he used the Val Minor facilities to start working, under the supervision of a physical coach following instructions from Barcelona.
'Dro started playing with us when he was four or five years old and kept playing with us up until under-14s,' says Val Minor's sporting director, Javier Lago. 'At this age, the kids are playing futsal until they grow up and start playing football.
'One of the coaches we have in the club, Jose Antonio Covelo, is a Barca scout who played for Barcelona back in the 1980s. So it was thanks to him that Barcelona had him monitored for quite a long time.
'In terms of talent, especially in the last third of the pitch, he is off the charts. He's among the best I've ever seen. I've managed Thiago and Rafinha Alcantara, seen Rodrigo Moreno… well, Dro is around that level for sure.'
The story behind Fernandez being called 'Dro' dates from this stage. When he started playing at Val Minor, one of his team-mates was called Pedro Villar. With two Pedros in the team, it was decided they should have nicknames in order to differentiate them: Pedro Fernandez became 'Dro', and Pedro Villar became 'Villi'.

Dro and Villi became, by some distance, the best players in their age group at Val Minor — to the point that Barcelona decided to sign them both in summer 2022. There, the nicknames became even more handy because in their team at La Masia was Pedro Rodriguez. So, for the sake of better communication, Dro kept being Dro.
'Dro had a lot of suitors back in the day,' Lago adds. 'Before leaving to Barca, he had gone to train with Celta Vigo in their youth ranks. He had plenty of offers, but in the end, both decided going to La Masia was the best thing, Dro and Villi. We try to go to Barcelona every year and check on them both. It's something we like to do as a club. We are all good friends here.'
At Barca, Fernandez has played as an attacking midfielder, both as a No 8 and No 10, as well as a left-winger. His technical finesse, powerful striking of the ball and ability to play in tight spaces between the lines have been a difference-maker from the first day he joined. Last season, he scored two goals in the 107 minutes he played across seven games with Barca's under-19 in the UEFA Youth League.
La Masia's coaches opted not to rush him into men's football, but his talent was never in doubt. Sources at Barca say his promotion to the senior setup for this pre-season is all part of a well-established plan to let him develop physically, adding that keeping him playing at age-group level means he benefits from the experience and responsibility that comes with a major role in the team.
Having now had his first taste of life with the senior group, many fans are getting excited. Could he become the next La Masia star to break through? He seems to be up for the challenge.
'The first-team dressing room is brilliant and they have helped me a lot,' Fernandez said on Sunday. 'The first day I joined them for training, I didn't even dare to go and have breakfast with them. I did not know if I could. I stayed in the dressing room and I didn't know if I was allowed to check my phone either in there.
'I think of myself as a technical player. I like to dribble past players and have fun on the pitch. I try to do what I know, and that's it. Now I have to be patient, go step by step because this is just getting started.'

Borussia Dortmund and Porto looking to poach Barcelona youngster on preseason tour

Barcelona have taken six youngsters from Barca Atletic or their under-19 side on their preseason tour, as Hansi Flick looks to channel more talent in the pipeline to the senior squad. However with competition for places at the club increasingly fierce, the ability to add young talent to his squad is increasingly limited. The promise of those opportunities is key to ensuring some of the game's most promising talents stick around – at least that is the case for Guille Fernandez. The 17-year-old creative midfielder is highly regarded at La Masia, but Sport say that he is not guaranteed to remain at the club this summer. Barcelona are priority for Guille Fernandez Fernandez is keen to continue at the club, but wants to ensure that he has the necessary room to grow. Given 15 minutes of action against FC Seoul, alongside cousin Toni Fernandez, he will sit down with agent Jorge Mendes to assess his situation, and his potential route forward, before making a decision on his future. That will involve sitting down with the club to hear out their plans for him. If there is no clear plan to give him chances, then Fernandez and Mendes will seek an exit either on loan or on a permanent deal. Image via Sport. European giants looking into Fernandez future Mendes already has a number of concrete proposals on the table for Fernandez, and interest from some Europe's biggest clubs. Neither of Porto or Borussia Dortmund have made an offer, but both are interested, and have strong histories of developing emerging talent before players make the jump to the very top of the game. Manchester City have also been linked with Fernandez in the past, as have Dortmund's biggest rivals Bayern Munich. The Spain under-19 international is under contract until 2027, but only penned that deal on the promise of a clear progression to the first-team, which with an array of options in central midfield already, looks a tough ask of Flick and Director of Football Deco.

'Take the risks': From Japan to Chicago, this week personifies the Golden Boy philosophy

It's another fight week for Golden Boy Promotions, but the greatest team celebration this week came courtesy of a moment not only outside their show, but on another continent entirely. Golden Boy chairman Oscar De La Hoya was among the happiest people in the sport on Wednesday morning as he watched Ricardo Sandoval shock the world. The California-bred contender dethroned reigning unified WBC/WBA flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji via upset split decision victory on the road in Yokohama, Japan. Teraji (25-2, 16 KOs) entered the fight as the No. 1 flyweight in the world and just outside Uncrowned's pound-for-pound top-10 list. Sandoval (27-2, 18 KOs) didn't show any fear, not even after he was floored in the fifth round of his first world title fight. In the end, the risk proved well worth the reward. In other words, the Golden Boy way. 'This is exactly why we watch match Golden Boy fighters accordingly,' De La Hoya told Uncrowned. 'We match them up tough, literally to get them ready for these types of fights — whether you're going overseas or you're going up against King Kong. 'In Ricardo's case, you can say it was both. But there's a method to our madness. We know how to do this. It paid off for Ricardo Sandoval — he goes to Japan, fights a two-division world champion and comes home with two world titles. We couldn't be prouder.' The feat took place one day before De La Hoya and his faithful staff were set to meet the media and the public ahead of its latest offering this weekend on DAZN from Credit Union 1 Arena on the campus of the University of Illinois-Chicago. Saturday's card is topped by a coin-flip matchup between super lightweight contenders Oscar Duarte and Kenneth Sims Jr. Both boxers perfectly fit the Golden Boy mode. Sims Jr. (22-2-1, 8 KOs) has rattled off nine straight wins since an upset loss to Samuel Teah in November 2018. His success has come almost in spite of the industry, as he's gone from Top Rank to Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) and now currently with Golden Boy all without losing a fight. The signs were there that the sport was never prepared to love him. He was all but punished after upsetting then-unbeaten Elvis Rodriguez in May 2021. Two years later and four fights into his arrangement with PBC, Sims upended Batyr Akhmedov in their May 2023 thriller — one of the year's best fights, and in a WBA title eliminator. Neither a title shot nor even another fight under PBC's banner came from the moment. Sims resurfaced more than a year later with Golden Boy. 'I really love fighters like Kenneth Sims,' said De La Hoya. 'He has proven to want to face everyone. You see in his record that he's not a big puncher, yet he stands right in front of you and can box you silly. 'He's in his hometown and is one step away from a world title. This is a great 50-50 fight and the winner should get one of the champions next. That's the risk that guys like Sims and Duarte are willing to take.' While Sims gets the home game, it's his opponent who has captured most of the attention in the buildup. Mexico's Duarte (29-2-1, 23 KOs) proved long ago his willingness to take on all comers. It dates back to him being matched ambitiously on early the 'Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN' series, where prospects were thrown in tough in lieu of being coddled and protected on the way to contention. Even after his first defeat — an upset split decision to Adrian Estrella on a 2019 DAZN undercard — Duarte was determined to punch his way back into contention. He's since won 13 of his past 14 starts, including three in a row following a high-profile 2023 knockout loss to Ryan Garcia in Houston, Texas. There wasn't any shame in the above-mentioned loss. Duarte moved up from lightweight, only to further agree to an elevated catchweight when Garcia was unable to make the 140-pound super lightweight limit. He more than held his own before he was dropped and counted out late in the eighth round. The three wins that followed all came in statement-making performances. Duarte became – and remains – the first fighter to stop former super featherweight titlist Joseph "JoJo" Diaz, doing so in the ninth round of their April 2024 meeting in Fresno, California. Incidentally, Diaz (34-7-1, 15 KOs) appears again on Saturday's Golden Boy show, as he faces former two-time 140-pound titleholder Regis Prograis (29-3, 24 KOs). The win over Diaz wasn't at all squandered. Duarte was actually prepared to face Sims on Golden Boy's offering this past November in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but Sims withdrew due to injury and was replaced by Uzbekistan's Akhmedov, who Duarte overpowered and outpointed over 10 rounds. Three months later, Duarte was the A-side of a main event for the first time in his career. The moment was supposed to come against Prograis, who was forced off the show after an untimely shoulder injury. Duarte instead fought the normally durable Miguel Madueno, who was never stopped in 34 bouts prior to their DAZN headliner this past February in Anaheim, California. That streak ended when Duarte forced the ending with less than a minute to go in the seventh round. 'Oscar Duarte is another one who can show what awaits you when you're willing to take risks and face anyone,' noted De La Hoya. 'Aside from his fighting spirit, the punching power really attracted us. He used to get by on his ability to knock fighters out. If he cracked you on the chin, you're either done for the night or you're not the same for the rest of the fight. 'His punching power is brutal and he's getting better with each fight.' Duarte will have to prove that on Saturday against as difficult of a style matchup as there is for a fighter on his way to title contention. Fortunately for all those invested in his future, he's game for the task. 'I am the new face of boxing and I will prove it this Saturday night inside the ring,' Duarte vowed during Thursday's final pre-fight press conference. 'This is going to be a good fight. It's a good challenge. I want to be a champion. Whoever's in front of me, I'm going to take him out.' Of course, the same risk in place for Duarte exists for Sims. It's what makes it such a fitting matchup for a Golden Boy show — win and move on, or lose and quickly rebuild if you're really about this life. The latter is a road that William Zepeda (33-1, 27 KOs) will soon travel. The previously unbeaten Mexican southpaw suffered a lopsided but spirited defeat to unbeaten three-division titlist Shakur Stevenson (24-0, 11 KOs) on July 12 in Queens, New York. Stevenson, Uncrowned's No. 9 pound-for-pound fighter, admitted after the fight that he was pushed every step of the way by Zepeda, and in one of his more entertaining performances. 'These are the great opportunities for our fighters, as long as they're willing to take the risks,' insisted De La Hoya, a Hall of Fame former six-division champ. 'The way I promote them is the same way I fought. You have to fight the best, you have to take on everyone. It's our job as a promoter to create opportunities. We can create the opportunity, but you have to do the rest. 'Ricardo Sandoval just fought on the other side of the world against one of the best in boxing and now he's coming home as the best. That doesn't happen when you don't take risks. So, we're going to see this weekend who wants it more. I already had my career, I can't get in the ring and fight for you. I wish I could. But you get in the ring, and you either win or lose. It's that simple.'

Laporta talks Lamine, Messi, Rashford, Real Madrid – ‘We were a better team than them last season'

Currently on the pre-season tour with the squad, FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta granted an interview to CNN Sports (h/t Mundo Deportivo), during which he discussed a variety of topics related to the club. One of the biggest talking points was the fanfare surrounding Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal, with Laporta lavishing great praise on the youngster. However, when asked about the comparisons between the 18-year-old La Masia gem and Barcelona great Lionel Messi, the club president opted not to fuel them any further. 'Lamine Yamal is Lamine Yamal, Leo Messi was Leo Messi,' Laporta said. 'Leo has been the best player in the world, and Lamine, I think, in his position right now, is the best player in the world,' he emphasised. Laporta praised the youngster for his ability and work ethic, saying: 'In Lamine's case, there aren't many players like him because he's a genius and he's at the highest level. 'He's very professional and knows that to be the best and be at the top, he needs to be in shape, he needs to train, he needs to follow the advice of the coach and the people around him, and, basically, feel happy, feel like he's enjoying playing football.' Laporta also spoke about Barcelona's most recent summer signing, Marcus Rashford, hailing the Englishman for the desire he showed to join the club. 'We signed this player because he was deeply committed to coming to Barcelona,' said Laporta. 'He's fast, strong, committed, and once again, he did everything he could to sign for Barcelona. He lobbied his agent, spoke to the club, and at the same time, to Manchester United.' Meanwhile, addressing Barcelona's arch-rivals Real Madrid, who have made key signings and changed managers this summer, Laporta commented: 'I think we were a better team than them last season. They have great players, they signed a new coach, and we'll see, but Real Madrid will always be our rival.' Laporta spoke highly of Lamine Yamal. (Photo by) During the interview, Laporta raised the possibility of Barcelona playing an official La Liga match in the USA next season, stating that they are open to the idea. 'We are delighted to go to the United States every year because we feel loved, we feel respected as a club, we have a lot of fans there,' he said. 'For Barcelona, it will be a great honour to participate in this event, which will be an official La Liga match, but at the same time, it will be a big event in the United States.' Continuing, he stated: 'We are a club that belongs to La Liga and we are responsible because we want to market the competition as best as possible. I reiterate, I am open and (Barcelona) is at La Liga's disposal.' Laporta concluded by criticising the increasingly congested football calendar, as he said: 'The football calendar is too tight. We need to find a solution and reduce the number of matches. 'As a club, we have to have more players than usual (to play more matches), and that means we have to invest more, and that means we have to do our best to have a more competitive squad. 'Of course, they're talented players, but they're also human beings, and there are limits. They need time to rest and enjoy themselves, and I think that's something to keep in mind.'
