US demands that EU companies comply with anti-diversity order

The US government has sent a letter to major EU corporations, demanding that they adhere to an executive order signed by US president Donald Trump banning diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programmes, according to the Financial Times.
This letter, distributed by the American embassy in Paris, among others, highlighted that the DEI executive order applied to US government service providers or suppliers, even if they were based outside of the US.
US diplomats in Belgium and eastern EU countries also distributed this letter to companies, with Italian and Spanish corporations receiving it as well.
The letter was first reported by French daily financial newspaper Les Echos. Although it is unclear which EU companies received this letter, in France, defence, aviation, infrastructure and consulting companies are likely to be the most vulnerable to such a demand.
In the US, the US Federal Communications Commission has already informed media giant Walt Disney and its ABC division that it will be starting an investigation into its DEI practices.
A French minister on Sunday accused US diplomats of interfering in the operations of French companies.
The US embassy didn't respond to questions this weekend from The Associated Press.
The document also asked recipients to complete, sign and return within five days a separate certification form to demonstrate that they are in compliance.
That form, also published by Le Figaro, said: 'All Department of State contractors must certify that they do not operate any programs promoting DEI that violate any applicable anti-discrimination laws.'
The form asked recipients to tick a box to confirm that they 'do not operate any programs promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion that violate any applicable Federal anti-discrimination laws.'
The letter added: 'If you do not agree to sign this document, we would appreciate it if you could provide detailed reasons, which we will forward to our legal services.'
Aurore Bergé, France's minister for equality between women and men and combating discrimination, said Sunday that the letter is "a form, obviously, of interference. That's to say it's an attempt to impose a diktat on our businesses'.
Speaking to broadcaster BFMTV, she said that France's government is 'following the situation very closely' and working to determine how many companies received the letter.
The minister said that 'many' companies have told the government that they don't plan to reply.
'It's out of the question that we'll prevent our business from promoting social progress,' the minister said.

"Thankfully, a lot of French companies don't plan to change their rules,' she added.
Euronews has contacted the American Chamber of Commerce to the EU for comment.
Why is Trump clamping down on DEI programmes?
Ever since his presidential campaigning days, Trump has consistently denounced DEI practices across the US, but especially in government offices, claiming that they were discriminatory.
He also promised to "forge a society that is colourblind and merit-based" in his Inauguration Day address.

On 20 January this year, Trump has issued an executive order, called "Ending radical and wasteful government DEI programs and preferencing", which reverses Joe Biden's 2021 moves to boost DEI programs in the federal government.
This new order meant that all federal government DEI programmes, offices, plans, positions, actions and initiatives would be wrapped up within 60 days. Employees of federal accessibility and DEI offices were also put on paid administration leave.
Another executive order, known as "Defending women from gender ideology extremism and restoring biological truth to the federal government", also requires the federal government to take out all racial gender ideology communication, guidance, forms and policies.
Critics of DEI policies have slammed measures such as tying executive compensation to diversity goals, or offering sponsored internship and fellowship programmes to people from only certain groups. Hiring targets for people of colour and women have been criticised as well.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday that a top-level UN conference on a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine has been postponed amid surging tensions between Israel and Iran. France and Saudi Arabia were due to co-chair the conference hosted by the UN General Assembly in New York on June 17-20, and Macron had been among leaders scheduled to attend. Macron told reporters that the two-state conference was postponed for logistical and security reasons, and because some Palestinian representatives couldn't come to the event. He insisted that it would be held 'as soon as possible' and that he was in discussion with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about a new date. He insisted that 'this delay does not call into question our determination to move forward with the implementation of the two-state solution, whatever the circumstances." One of the aims at the UN conference was to increase the number of countries recognising Palestinian territories as an independent state. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the creation of a Palestinian state, and Israel refused to participate in the conference. On Wednesday, Reuters reported that US President Trump's administration had sent a cable discouraging governments around the world from attending the conference. It reportedly warned countries that any "anti-Israel actions" taken after the conference could be followed by diplomatic consequences from Washington. Macron stressed that 'the aim is a demilitarised Palestinian state recognising the existence and the security of Israel,' Macron said. Any such state would exclude any Hamas leaders, he said. After Israel's strikes on Iran on Friday, Macron said that France's military forces around the Middle East are ready to help protect partners in the region, including Israel, but wouldn't take part in any attacks on Iran. He said "the risk of this march towards nuclear weapons by Iran threatens the region, Europe and, more generally, collective political stability." French schools, places of worship, public buildings, public festivals and gatherings and places of interest for the French Israeli, American and Jewish communities are all the focus of a call for greater security given out by France's interior minister Bruno Retailleau today. In a letter seen by Euronews addressed to the minister of defence, the heads of the army, police and other security chiefs, Retailleau said that deteriorating situation in the Middle East following Israel's strikes on Iran necessitated implementation of immediate action to increase security within France. In addition to calling on a beefed up police presence and extra vigilance, the note also called for efforts to track individuals, "particularly Iranians or those with links to Iran", already of interest to French authorities in the context of anti-radicalisation. After convening with his security cabinet, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Germany will also increase protection of Israeli assets and Jewish sites. While Merz emphasised Israel's 'right to protect its existence and the security of its citizens," he also called on both sides to refrain from further escalation.

US District Judge Michael Fabiarz had issued an order Wednesday that the government could not detain or deport Khalil, a legal permanent resident, based on Secretary of State Marco Rubio's assertions that his presence on US soil posed a national security threat. Iran launches second wave of 'dozens' of missiles into Israel

The Israeli Defence Forces said "dozens" of Iranian missiles were launched into Israel in a second wave of strikes in the early hours of Saturday. Sirens and the boom of explosions, possible from Israeli interceptors, could be heard in the sky over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The IDF said "some of the missiles were intercepted," adding that "Search and Rescue forces are currently operating in a number of locations across the country in which reports of fallen projectiles were received." Israeli newspaper Haaretz wrote that direct hits were reported in central Israel, wounding five people. It said several buildings were hit by Iranian missiles. The Israeli military urged civilians to head to shelter amid the fresh wave of missiles, but have since permitted them to leave again. US President Donald Trump has framed the volatile moment in the Middle East as a possible "second chance' for Iran's leadership to avoid further destruction "before there is nothing left and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire.' Trump claimed on his Truth Social platform that he had given Iran a "60 day ultimatum to make a deal", and that Friday marked "day 61." The White House has insisted that Washington was not involved in Israel's military operation, although anonymous US officials have said the Trump administration was aware in advance of Israel's planned large-scale attacks on Iran. In an interview with ABC News on Friday morning, Trump said the Israeli attack on Iran was 'excellent' and again previewed more attacks to come. 'We gave them a chance and they didn't take it,' Trump told ABC's Jon Karl. 'They got hit hard, very hard. They got hit about as hard as you're going to get hit. And there's more to come. A lot more.' The US president pressed on Iran as he met his national security team in the Situation Room on Friday to discuss the tricky path forward following Israel's devastating strikes, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to keep up for 'as many days as it takes' to decapitate Iran's nuclear programme. While the White House said it had no involvement in the strikes, Trump highlighted that Israel used its deep arsenal of weaponry provided by the US to target Iran's main enrichment facility in Natanz and the country's ballistic missile program, as well as top nuclear scientists and officials. Trump also spoke Friday with British Prime Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron about the evolving situation, as well as Netanyahu.
