Indiana face OKC in their first NBA Finals appearance since 2000
INDIANAPOLIS: Pascal Siakam already owns one NBA championship ring and he now has a chance to win another. Siakam was the biggest hero as the Indiana Pacers earned their first NBA Finals appearance since 2000 with a solid 125-108 victory over the visiting New York Knicks in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals on Saturday night at Indianapolis.
Siakam recorded 31 points and three blocked shots to finish off a stellar series in which he was named MVP of the series. He was 10-of-18 shooting while notching his third 30-point outing of the series. "So deserving," Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said of Siakam. "The guy has been a rock of consistency all year."
Indiana will face the Western Conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals. Game 1 is Thursday night at Oklahoma City. Siakam, a nine-year veteran, won a title in 2019 with the Toronto Raptors. Now he'll be the guy fielding questions from his teammates about what to expect.
"That year was my third year, I was this young kid. I thought it was going to be easy (to get back)," Siakam said. "I appreciate it even more now because I know how hard it is to get here."
Tyrese Haliburton added 21 points, 13 assists and three steals for fourth-seeded Indiana. Obi Toppin added 18 points off the bench and Andrew Nembhard had 14 points and six steals for the Pacers. "It's a special feeling to do it with this group," Haliburton said. "We got to the same spot last year and we fell short. We worked our tails off to get back here."
OG Anunoby scored 24 points and Karl-Anthony Towns added 22 points and 14 rebounds for third-seeded New York. Jalen Brunson had 19 points and seven assists and Mikal Bridges had 15 points for the Knicks.
Indiana had a 25-10 edge on fastbreak points to finish the series with a dominating advantage 106-48 in that category. New York committed 18 turnovers in the finale, including five apiece by Brunson and Bridges.
"I saw a lot of breakaways on their part," Brunson said. "It was the reason why they would extend the lead throughout the series. It's something I have to be able to control. ... It's terrible on my part."
The Pacers shot 54.1 percent from the field, including a solid 17 of 33 from 3-point range (51.5 percent). Myles Turner and reserve Thomas Bryant had 11 points apiece and Aaron Nesmith added 10 for the Pacers.
New York made 47.7 percent of its shots and was 9 of 32 (28.1 percent) from behind the arc. Landry Shamet had 12 points on four treys off the bench. It was the first appearance in the Eastern Conference finals for the Knicks since 2000 when they also lost to the Pacers.
Thibodeau 'proud'
"I'm proud of what these guys did," Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said. "There was a lot that we had to get through and I thought we handled that part well. The playoffs are hard-fought and these games can go either way. There's the disappointment of falling short of the ultimate goal but still proud of what we accomplished."
New York trailed by 15 entering the final quarter but a basket by Towns and two in a row by Anunoby pulled the Knicks within 92-83 with 10:15 remaining. Haliburton then took over as he scored 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the final stanza.
The Pacers pushed the lead back to 14 on a basket by Nembhard with 8:26 left. Later, a basket by Haliburton and a 3-pointer by Nembhard made it 113-94 with 4:22 left. Siakam later made two free throws to make it 120-99 with 1:52 left as New York waved the white flag. Indiana led by four at the break but started the third quarter with 3-pointers by Siakam and Nesmith and a three-point play by Siakam to take a 67-54 lead.
The Knicks were within 69-61 after Brunson's basket with 8:53 left in the period before Bryant (two) and Nembhard (one) combined for three treys in 86 seconds as the Pacers grabbed a 78-63 advantage with 6:44 remaining in the quarter.
Haliburton later ended the third with a dunk as the Pacers had a 34-23 edge over the 12 minutes to expand their lead to 92-77. Siakam scored 16 first-half points to help the Pacers hold a 58-54 lead at the break. Anunoby scored 14 in the half for New York.
Though the Knicks saw their season end, Towns is convinced the team will make more deep postseason runs in the near future. "It hurts not to bring an opportunity to the city for a championship," Towns said. "We have a lot of great guys in this locker room. The plan now is to put ourselves in this position again and succeed next time." – Reuters

Young stars sparkle as Thunder and Pacers seek first NBA titles

Oklahoma City hosts game one in best-of-seven series Thursday OKLAHOMA CITY: Powered by young star talent and deep rosters, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers open the NBA Finals on Thursday, each trying to bring their city a first-ever crown. Oklahoma City, fancied by oddsmakers after an NBA-high 68 regular-season wins, will host game one in the best-of-seven championship series. Both teams are fast-paced squads with young star point guards, 26-year-old NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the Thunder and Indiana's 25-year-old Tyrese Haliburton. The Pacers seek the first NBA crown in their 58-year history while the Thunder, who moved from Seattle in 2008, took the franchise's only title as the SuperSonics in 1979. "It's a new blueprint for the league," Pacers center Myles Turner said. "The years of the superteams and stacking, it's not as effective as it once was. The new trend now is kind of what we're doing. OKC does the same thing. Young guys, get out and run, defend and use the power of friendship." Oklahoma City's only prior NBA Finals appearance was in 2012, when Kevin Durant, James Harden and Russell Westbrook lost to LeBron James-led Miami. Indiana's only prior trip to the NBA Finals came in 2000, a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, but the Pacers also won three 1970s titles in the American Basketball Association, which sent four teams into the NBA in 1976. Gilgeous-Alexander could become the first league scoring champion to win an NBA title in the same season since 2000, when Shaquille O'Neal led the Lakers past the Pacers. "SGA" averaged 32.7 points, 6.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.0 blocked shots a game in leading the Thunder to the NBA's best regular-season record at 68-14. With forwards Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren, Gilgeous-Alexander has formed a formidable trio. The Thunder swept Memphis in the first round of the playoffs, outlasted Nikola Jokic-powered Denver in seven games then dispatched Minnesota in five. The Pacers went 50-32 behind 20.2 points and 6.9 rebounds a game from Pascal Siakam and 18.6 points, 9.2 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals a game by Haliburton, who helped the USA win Paris Olympic gold last year. "What makes him very good is that he's very confident," Williams said of Haliburton. "It makes him a very dangerous individual." Indiana eliminated Milwaukee and Cleveland in five games each and took out New York in six. Oklahoma City beat Indiana twice in the regular season with Gilgeous-Alexander averaging 39 points, eight assists and seven rebounds while Haliburton struggled, averaging 11 points, three rebounds and 5.5 assists. The Thunder dominate defensively, leading the playoffs with 18 turnovers forced and 10.8 steals a game plus a 42.6 percent opponent shooting percentage from the floor. The Pacers, however, average 117.4 points a game in the playoffs and own the top shooting percentage overall at 49.7 percent and from three-point range at 40.1 percent. 'Be who we are' Each team helped build their current lineup by trading NBA star Paul George. The Pacers sent him to the Thunder in 2017 for players that were later traded for Haliburton and draft picks that landed Andrew Nembhard and Ben Sheppard. "This franchise took a chance on me, saw something that other people didn't see in me," Haliburton said. The Thunder traded George to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2019 in a deal that landed Gilgeous-Alexander and a draft pick that was used on Williams. Oklahoma City has a player who won an NBA title in Alex Caruso, who helped the Lakers win the 2020 crown, while the Pacers boast Siakam from Toronto's 2019 title run. "You don't have to do anything special," Caruso said of winning an NBA crown. "You just have to be who we are. That has worked for us throughout this whole year." Indiana coach Rick Carlisle won an NBA title guiding the 2011 Dallas Mavericks and could become only the fourth coach to win NBA crowns with multiple teams. – AFP

Messi and Suarez each score twice as Miami rips Montreal

MIAMI: Inter Miami's Luis Suarez celebrates scoring his team's third goal with Lionel Messi during their team's Major League Soccer match against CF Montreal at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on May 28, 2025. - AFP MIAMI: Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez each scored two goals to spark Inter Miami to a 4-2 Major League Soccer victory over visiting Montreal on Wednesday. Argentine superstar Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute and assisted on Suarez's first goal in the 68th minute for a 2-0 edge. Uruguayan star Suarez scored again in the 71st minute before Montreal's Dante Sealy answered in the 74th minute. Messi struck again in the 87th minute before Victor Loturi pulled one back from the Canadian club two minutes into stoppage time. Miami jumped to sixth in the Eastern Conference with seven wins and five drawn from 15 matches while East doormat Montreal slid to 1-10 with five drawn. Miami had lost twice and drawn twice in the past four matches. 'We had to take responsibility for the poor results. It's a matter of correcting to regain confidence,' said Suarez, who added the victory 'means a lot ... We have to continue to gain confidence in this kind of game.' Inter coach Javier Mascherano was concerned about injuries to defenders Gonzalo Lujan, Tomas Aviles and Jordi Alba. 'We needed to cut the negative dynamic. I'm happy,' he said. 'Unfortunately (the victory) is tarnished by the departure of Gonzalo, Jordi and Toto. 'In the case of Gonzalo and Jordi it was something muscular, which tomorrow we will see how far it is. In the case of 'Toto' it was the ankle that swelled in a stomp. Maybe he could continue. He wanted to continue.' Overall league leader Philadelphia won 2-1 at Toronto as the Union rallied late after Norway's Ola Brynhildsen scored in the 75th minute. Nathan Harriel netted the equalizer for the Union in the 86th minute and Germany's Kai Wagner scored the game winner two minutes into stoppage time. — AFP The Union improved to 10-3-3 for a league-high 33 points while none of the three clubs just behind them on the table could manage full points, second-place Cincinnati drawing 3-3 with visiting Dallas and third-place Nashville drawing 2-2 at fourth-place Columbus. – AFP
