Cornish Pirates sign Gloucester winger Ward
Cornish Pirates have signed Gloucester winger Matty Ward for the 2025-26 season.
The 23-year-old comes in as Matt McNab leaves the club after two years to join Champ Rugby rivals Doncaster Knights.
Ward scored a try on his only Gloucester appearance this season in the Premiership Rugby Cup.
He has also spent time at Championship side Hartpury and Premiership outfit Newcastle Falcons.
"Matty has had exposure with Gloucester in the Premiership Cup and has also had a good season with Hartpury University in the British Universities and Colleges Sport competition," said Pirates joint-head coach Gavin Cattle.
"He is a player still with a lot of growth in his game, and although injuries have been disruptive at times he has a good season behind him."
Meanwhile, 26-year-old Zimbabwe international McNab leaves the club having scored 30 tries in 51 appearances since moving to Penzance two years ago.
He had previously spent time at Hartpury and Worcester Warriors and also played in South Africa's Currie Cup for the Zimbabwe Goshawks.
"Since arriving at the Pirates, Matt immediately showed his strength and ability and a real commitment both on and off the pitch," Cattle said.
"He is a big personality who will be missed massively, and we would like to thank him for his quite considerable overall contribution."
McNab added: "It has been the best two years of my rugby career so far, and I have loved every single minute.
"I can't thank everyone at the Pirates enough for what they have done for me along the journey. It's been amazing for my development on the field and in my day-to-day life off it."

CONWAY, S.C. (WNCT) — East Carolina baseball came up short in the finals of the Conway Regional, losing to Coastal Carolina 1-0. The Pirates' season will come to an end with the loss. The game was a pitchers' duel until the very end. Bradley Zayac got the start for the ECU, striking out four Chanticleers and holding Coastal scoreless for seven innings. Coastal Carolina would score their one and only run in the eight inning, after a SAC Fly into deep center field from Sebastian Alexander. East Carolina would go three-up, three-down in the top of the ninth to finish the game. Coastal Carolina will go on to face the winner of the Auburn Regional in the Super Regional. Machado homers and hits go-ahead sac fly as the Padres beat the Pirates 6-4
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado homered in the first inning and hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in a four-run seventh for the San Diego Padres, who rallied past the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 on Sunday to take two of three games in their series. Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run shot to tie Roberto Clemente for third place on Pittsburgh's career list with 240 homers. Adam Frazier also went deep to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead in the fourth. Gavin Sheets slammed face-first into the wall while tracking Frazier's homer and left the game. The Padres started their comeback in the sixth when Jackson Merrill's second double of the game brought in three-time batting champion Luis Arraez, who was aboard on a one-out double. San Diego broke through against reliever Tanner Rainey (0-1), who came on to start the seventh and walked three of the five batters he faced and allowed an RBI single to pinch-hitter Elías Díaz. After Rainey walked Fernando Tatis Jr. to load the bases with one out, Caleb Ferguson came on and allowed Arraez's single that tied it and Machado's sac fly. Tyler Wade beat out a bases-loaded single that Ferguson knocked down but couldn't find in time to make a play. It was the second homer in two games and fifth of the season for the 38-year-old McCutchen, who's in his 17th big league season and 12th with Pittsburgh over two stints. The shot off Randy Vásquez with one out in the third inning gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Machado's homer off starter Andrew Heaney was his seventh. Key stat McCutchen has 324 homers during a 17-year career in which he's also played for Philadelphia, Milwaukee, San Francisco and the New York Yankees. Up next Pirates RHP Paul Skenes (4-5, 2.15 ERA) is scheduled to start Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series against Houston that begins a nine-game homestand. He reports that the Pittsburgh Pirates are listening to offers for third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes. While Hayes does not have the right-handed power numbers the Yankees are looking for, this could be an opportunity move. In 2023, he ended Nolan Arenado's Gold Glove streak, taking home the award himself. His glove is elite. Over the past four seasons, he's racked up 72 Defensive Runs Saved, topping the position. That's impact defense. Advertisement Offensively, it's been a different story. Hayes is hitting .223 with a .560 OPS in 2025, a clear dip from his career norms. That's a concern, but it's one the Yankees might be willing to overlook given their lineup depth and their ongoing struggle to settle on a reliable third baseman. The Pirates might be happy to shed Hayes' salary as the rebuild and not ask for a ton in prospects in return. YES Network's Michael Kay has been vocal about this.
