Death toll rises to 17 in Indonesia quarry collapse as search continues

CIREBON, Indonesia (AP): The death toll from the collapse of a stone quarry in Indonesia's West Java province has risen to at least 17, with eight people still missing, officials said Saturday.
The victims were trapped in the rubble when the Gunung Kuda quarry in Cirebon district collapsed on Friday. A dozen survivors were found by rescuers.
By Saturday afternoon, rescuers had retrieved 16 bodies, while one of the survivors died in the hospital, said local police chief Sumarni. She said rescuers are searching for eight people still believed to be trapped
"The search operation has been hampered by bad weather, unstable soil and rugged terrain,' said Sumarni who goes by a single name like many Indonesians.
She said the cause of the collapse is still under investigation, and police have been questioning six people, including the owner of the quarry.
Local television reports showed emergency personnel, along with police, soldiers and volunteers, digging desperately in the quarry in a steep limestone cliff, supported by five excavators, early Saturday.
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi said in a video statement on Instagram that he visited the quarry before he was elected in February and considered it dangerous.
"It did not meet the safety standard elements for its workers,' Mulyadi said, adding that at that time, "I didn't have any capacity to stop it.'
On Friday, Mulyadi said that he had ordered the quarry shut, as well as four other similar sites in West Java.
Illegal or informal resource extraction operations are common in Indonesia, providing a tenuous livelihood to those who labor in conditions with a high risk of injury or death.
Landslides, flooding and tunnel collapses are just some of the hazards associated with them. Much of the processing of sand, rocks or gold ore also involves the use of highly toxic mercury and cyanide by workers using little or no protection.
Last year, a landslide triggered by torrential rains struck an unauthorized gold mining operation on Indonesia's Sumatra island, killing at least 15 people. - AP

Mohd Yusri said that apart from that hide-and-seek episode, the immigration party also arrested four Bangladeshis, three Indonesians. and two Thais aged between five and 49 years old in raids at seven premises. According to him, all the detainees were taken to the Ajil Immigration Depot for further investigation under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. In addition, a notice was issued to a local man to appear at the state JIM office to assist in investigations under the same act.

Actor Jonathan Joss fatally shot outside his home
Jonathan Joss (pic), a voice actor best known for his work on the animated television series King Of The Hill , was fatally shot near his Texas home, authorities said Monday. Police were dispatched to a home in south San Antonio about 7pm Sunday on a shooting in progress call. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the wounded 59-year-old near the street. "The officers attempted life saving measures until EMS arrived. EMS pronounced the victim deceased,' San Antonio police said in a statement. Joss' death was confirmed by his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales. "He was murdered,' de Gonzales told The Associated Press in a text. The two were married earlier this year on Valentine's Day. In a statement, de Gonzales said that before the shooting, he and Joss were checking mail at Joss' home, which had been heavily damaged during a January fire that claimed the lives of their three dogs. A man approached the two and threatened them with a gun, de Gonzales said. "Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life,' de Gonzales said in a statement. After the shooting, authorities arrested 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja and charged him with murder in Joss' death. Police said their investigation was ongoing and did not immediately provide any information on what prompted the shooting.
