UNION COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — What started as a shoplifting incident at an Indian Trail Walmart turned into a high-speed chase and crash, the sheriff's office announced.
Union County deputies were called to the scene after Walmart employees reported a theft.
Deputies began searching the area and found Marco Vongmalaythong, 42, sitting in his SUV behind the Walmart. When deputies tried to stop him, they said Vongmalaythong took off.
The chase didn't last long. Deputies said Vongmalaythong tried to take a sharp left onto Indian Trail Fairview Road. But at those speeds, the turn was too much.

Deputies said he clipped a curb, lost control, and rolled his SUV onto its side. With his vehicle flipped, Marco became stuck.
Deputies were able to pull him from the vehicle and place him under arrest.
Inside the SUV, deputies found more than $6,000 worth of stolen items from Walmart. Marco's vehicle was seized under North Carolina's 'Run and Done' law, which allows law enforcement to take the vehicles of suspects who flee from police.

Marco is now facing charges of felony larceny and felony speeding to elude arrest. He's being held at the Union County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond.

MORGANTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A previously convicted Burke County man is charged with a string of felonies after six firearms were reportedly discovered in his vehicle over the weekend. On Sunday, June 1, deputies with the Burke County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop on a Jeep Cherokee, claiming it was displaying a fictitious license plate. The driver was identified as 34-year-old Tyler Dwayne South, who had an outstanding order for arrest for failure to appear in Mitchell County. According to the sheriff's office, a vehicle search resulted in the following items allegedly being seized: Six firearms with ammunition, 16 grams of fentanyl, 1 gram of methamphetamine, Alprazolam tablets, Marijuana, and Drug paraphernalia. Deputies say one of the firearms seized had been reported stolen. South was arrested and charged with: Felony Possession of Methamphetamine, Felony Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Felony Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon, Felony Trafficking Fentanyl, Felony Possession with Intent to Sell a Schedule II Controlled Substance, and Three misdemeanor drug offenses A citation was also issued to South for operating a motor vehicle while displaying a fictitious license plate. South was given a $250,000 secured bond, and his first appearance was scheduled for June 2, at the Burke County Courthouse. Thats' when he was further charged with a felony probation violation, resulting in an additional $50,000 secured bond. The outstanding Order for Arrest from Mitchell County was also served. South was issued an additional $1,000 secured bond with a court date of July 1 in Mitchell County District Court. His total bond now stands at $301,000 secured. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. MORGANTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Burke County officials are looking for an individual accused of causing thousands of dollars in damages to airplanes at Foothills Regional Airport. On May 26, deputies and NC State Highway Patrol responded to a reported breaking and entering at the airport. Surveillance video captured a white or silver/gray SUV, possibly a Jeep Grand Cherokee, pulling up to the airport around 8:39 p.m. A white man, around 30 to 40 years old, was seen exiting the vehicle. He was seen wearing light-colored pants, a dark shirt, dark boots, a dark baseball cap and carrying a small military-style backpack with MOLLE webbing. Officials say he attempted to steal multiple aircraft out of an airplane hangar. Although he was unsuccessful, the attempt caused an estimated $400,000 in damages to several airplanes, according to the aircraft owners. The investigation remains ongoing.
