Anshul Kamboj shines as India A set England Lions back on Day Two of unofficial Test

Anshul Kamboj (Screengrab) England Lions reached 58 for one at lunch, trailing by 290 runs after India A was dismissed for 348 on the second day of the unofficial Test match on Saturday. Tom Haines (28 not out) and Emilio Gay (3 not out) were at the crease when lunch was called. The initial breakthrough came from Anshul Kamboj, who dismissed Ben McKinney (12) with an outswinger, caught by wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. This dismissal came shortly after McKinney was given a reprieve at point in the eighth over. Despite consistent pressure from India A bowlers, the Lions managed to score freely. Gay faced challenging spells from the Indian bowlers, although batting conditions were more favourable compared to the first day's overcast weather and grassy pitch. India A, starting the day at 319 for seven, added only 29 runs to their overnight score. Tanush Kotian scored 15 from 37 deliveries with two boundaries, whilst Kamboj contributed just two runs. Joshua Tongue found success by removing both overnight batsmen - bowling Kotian and trapping Kamboj lbw. He also contributed to Tushar Deshpande's (11) run-out dismissal. Khaleel Ahmed remained unbeaten on seven. Brief scores: India A: 348 all out in 89.3 overs ( KL Rahul 116, Karun Nair 40, Dhruv Jurel 52, Nitish Kumar Reddy 34; Chris Woakes 3/60, George Hill 2/56) England Lions: 58 for 1 in 16 overs (Tom Haines batting 28; Anshul Kamboj 1/13).

Kamboj gets McKinney after India A put on board 348

Kamboj got India A the breakthrough with a brilliant outswinger that had Ben McKinney (12) caught behind by wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel for 12, shortly after the left-handed opener was dropped at point in the eighth over. Tom Haines (28 batting) and Emilio Gay (3 batting) were at the crease as the Lions were trailing by 290 runs in their first innings. Northampton, Jun 7 (PTI) Anshul Kamboj provided the breakthrough to leave England Lions at 58 for one at lunch after India A folded for 348 on day two of the second unofficial Test, here Saturday. Otherwise, run flowed easily for the Lions even as India A bowlers continued to probe their defence and discipline continuously. Gay was, in particular, troubled by the India A bowlers even though the conditions remained conducive for batting compared to the first day when it was overcast and the pitch sported fresh grass. Earlier, resuming at 319 for seven, Indian batters could not trouble the scorers much as the remainder of the batting folded for the first-innings total of 348. Overnight batters Tanush Kotian fell for 15 off 37 balls with two fours while Kamboj was dismissed for a mere two. There was success at last for Joshua Tongue who not only accounted for the overnight batters — cleaning up Kotian and dismissing Kamboj leg-before — but he also played a key role in the run-out dismissal of Tushar Deshpande (11). Khaleel Ahmed remained unbeaten on seven. Brief scores: India A: 348 all out in 89.3 overs (KL Rahul 116, Karun Nair 40, Dhruv Jurel 52, Nitish Kumar Reddy 34; Chris Woakes 3/60, George Hill 2/56) England Lions: 58 for 1 in 16 overs (Tom Haines batting 28; Anshul Kamboj 1/13). Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's absence 'a shame', but England rival unfazed; warns team of India's unrivalled depth

Chris Woakes was England Lions' star with the ball on the opening day of the second unofficial Test match, taking the first three Indian wickets. It serves as a good sign for Woakes, who is returning from injury and was named in England's squad for the first Test of the series at Headingley in Leeds. Woakes, however, was frustrated by a precise and chanceless century made by KL Rahul, who impressed with 116 to set the spine for India A's innings. Woakes was full of praise for the Indian opener, especially considering that it was a lively and moving pitch throughout the day. 'KL played really well, good hundred, on a wicket which did a little bit all day. There were periods where it was a bit quiet, but it was doing something for most of the day,' Woakes reflected on the proceedings in an interview with ESPNcricinfo after day's play. When asked about what it feels like to be preparing against an Indian team without Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli, Woakes spoke about how he thinks the team is still in a strong position due to the quality of replacements and the depth present in the setup. 'It's always good to come up against strong opposition going into a Test series that you know is going to be hard-fought. We've had some good battles against Virat and Rohit over the years. For the game itself, it's a shame they won't be there,' said Woakes. 'But Indian cricket has so much depth, the players who will come in, I'm sure will be of a very high standard, who have proven themselves some way or the other,' claimed the Englishman. If Woakes is drafted into England's team for the Test match, he will take confidence from his dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal on day one. A big inswinger caught Jaiswal falling across, trapping him LBW. Woakes also contributed with the wickets of Ahimanyu Easwaran and Karun Nair, all LBW. On if he enjoyed the Jaiswal wicket, Woakes said he was happy with how he performed after an injury layoff, and the ability to bowl an extended spell. 'I enjoyed all three to be honest. I felt like I could have a couple more, but pleased with how the ball came out. Most important for me was to get through 17 overs. Ticked box for me.'
