ROP wins International Road Federation award
Athens, Greece – The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has earned international recognition by securing first place in the prestigious International Road Federation (IRF) Awards under the Road Safety category.
The accolade was awarded during a ceremony held in Athens, Greece, and acknowledges the ROP's innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI) and smart technologies to enhance traffic safety across the sultanate.
Brigadier Eng Ali Suleim al Falahi, Director General of Traffic, accepted the award on behalf of ROP, marking a significant milestone in Oman's journey toward intelligent transportation systems.
The winning initiative highlights ROP's collaboration with Huawei Oman to develop and implement advanced traffic management solutions. These include AI-powered monitoring systems, real-time accident data analysis, and scientific identification of high-risk road zones. The integration of smart systems has contributed to a measurable decline in road accidents and improved emergency response efficiency.
The IRF Awards, presented annually by one of the world's leading transport infrastructure bodies, honour outstanding contributions that promote road safety and infrastructure development globally. The ROP's success places Oman among countries recognised for leveraging technology to address critical public safety challenges.

Oman streamlines ID system under amended Civil Status Law: Longer validity, revised fees
Oman has implemented significant reforms to its civil identification system through Royal Oman Police Decision 78/2025, amending the Executive Regulation of the Civil Status Law originally issued under Decision 40/2007. The changes modernise card validity periods and fee structures to enhance administrative efficiency while adjusting fiscal requirements. Speaking exclusively to the Times of Oman, Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Zadjali, Founding Partner of Mohammed Ibrahim Law Firm, explained that: 'Under the previous framework, Omani nationals' identity cards had a validity of five years with an issuance or renewal fee of OMR 5 and the replacement of damage/lost fee was OMR10. Residence cards for non-Omani, on the other hand, were available with a validity of one year or two years. For a one-year residence card, the issuance or renewal fee was OMR5, and the replacement of damage/lost fee was OMR10, while for a two-year residence card, the issuance or renewal fee was OMR10, and the replacement fee was OMR20.' He added that 'the amended framework now grants 10-year validity for Omani national IDs doubling previous durations but raises issuance/renewal fees to OMR10. Crucially, the renewal window shrinks from 60 to 30 days post-expiry. For foreigners, the validity of residence cards has now increased from two years to three years. The residence card can be issued or renewed for one, two, or three years at fees of OMR5, 10, or 15 respectively, with a replacement fee of OMR20 in case of loss or damage.' ROP amends validity, fees for Omani ID and expat resident cards
Muscat – Royal Oman Police (ROP) has issued Decision No 78/2025 amending provisions of the Executive Regulation of the Civil Status Law, extending the validity period and revising fees for personal identity cards of Omani citizens and resident cards for expatriates. Under the new rules, personal identity cards for Omanis will now be valid for ten years from the date of issue or renewal, as opposed to five years earlier. Issuing, renewing or replacing a lost or damaged card will cost RO10. Resident cards of expatriates will be valid for a maximum of three years. The fee for issuing or renewing a resident card of one-year validity is RO5, RO10 for two years and RO15 for three years. Replacement of a lost or stolen resident card will cost RO20. Issued by Lt Gen Hassan bin Mohsen al Shuraiqi, Inspector General of Police and Customs, the amendments replace Article 21 of the regulation. The changes were made in line with the Civil Status Law (Royal Decree No 99/66), its Executive Regulation (Decision No 40/2007), with approval of Ministry of Finance. The decision was published in Official Gazette Issue 1608 and takes effect from August 7, 2025. The move was welcomed by citizens and residents. 'Royal Oman Police is one of the most active government agencies in terms of innovation and development, especially in the services it provides, which are easy to access and quick to complete through advanced systems. Thank you,' Abdullah al Wahaibi posted on X. Hamad al Awisi, also on X, commented, 'We thank the Lt Gen for this step that facilitates citizens and reduces renewal procedures. However, over time, the card remains vulnerable to damage or loss, especially with daily use. Since the fee for issuing a replacement for a lost or damaged card is the same as the renewal fee, it may be worth reviewing in the future.' Ramesh Iyer, an Indian expatriate in Salalah, said, 'Earlier, we had to renew our resident cards every two years, which meant more paperwork and time off work. With the option of a three-year validity, we save both time and money. For families with schoolchildren, it reduces the stress of renewals every two years.' Salim Akthar, a Pakistani resident in Muscat, added, 'Paying once for three years makes life easier and more organised. It's also helpful for frequent travellers as it eliminates the risk of expiry while abroad. The flexibility shows ROP is considering residents' needs.'

Expats can now get 3-year validity Resident Cards in Oman
Muscat: Expats living in Oman will now be able to get a Resident Card with a validity of 3-years. The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has introduced three validity periods for expatriate resident cards, ranging from one to three years. These changes stem from Decision No. 78/2025, issued today by Lieutenant General Hassan bin Mohsin al Shraiqi, Inspector-General of Police and Customs, which also updated the validity of Omani ID cards for citizens to 10 years.
