South African rand jumps as gold high boosts commodity-backed currency

Reuters14-03-2025

JOHANNESBURG, March 14 (Reuters) - South Africa's rand gained on Friday due to record high gold prices that were driven by investors seeking safe haven assets amid worries over a global trade war.
At 1457 GMT, the rand traded at 18.1850 against the dollar , about 0.7% firmer than its previous close. The South African currency had fallen earlier this week on domestic political tensions sparked by a revised national budget.
"The rand is ending the week on a strong note, bolstered by global market sentiment rather than domestic developments, despite uncertainty surrounding the ratification of the proposed budget," said Zain Vawda, market analyst at MarketPulse by OANDA.
Gold surged on Friday as investors piled on to a historic rally in the safe haven asset to seek cover from economic uncertainty sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff war.
Trump's policies have unsettled global markets after he threatened a 200% tariff on wine, cognac and other alcohol imports from Europe, escalating a global trade war that has worried financial markets and raised recession fears.
The rand's strength has more to do with the record gold price and strong commodity prices than anything relating to the budget, said Roy Topol, portfolio manager at Cratos Capital.
The commodity-backed rand often takes cues from global drivers like U.S. policy, but failed to capitalise on the dollar's weakness for much of this week amid domestic political and budgetary spats.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana tabled the 2025 budget on Wednesday, in which he proposed raising value-added tax (VAT) by 0.5-percentage-point this year, followed by another 0.5-point hike next year.
Major political parties publicly rejected this proposal, after rebuffing Godongwana's initial 2-percentage-point VAT hike three weeks ago.
Analysts said budget uncertainty raises fiscal risk which slows interest rate cut expectations. Investors will next week focus on the South African Reserve Bank's interest rate decision.
A poll by Reuters on Friday found that the central bank will likely keep interest rates steady as global trade risks and battles over the national budget keep policymakers in wait-and-see mode.
On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the blue-chip Top-40 (.JTOPI), opens new tab index closed up 1%.
South Africa's benchmark 2030 government bond was weaker, with the yield up 5.5 basis points to 9.165%.

Urgent recall of over 1,150,000 power banks for fire and explosion risk

More than one million lithium-ion battery power banks sold in the US have been recalled over the risk of them catching fire, burning and exploding. About 1,158,000 Anker PowerCore 10000 power banks were recalled on Thursday after the company received 19 reports of fires and explosions. That included two incidents of minor burns that did not require medical attention, and 11 reports of property damage totaling more than $60,700, according to the US's agency responsible for protecting the public from product injuries. The Anker power banks under the recall – only model A1263 – 'can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers', states a notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). They have 'Anker' engraved on the front, and the model number and serial 'SN' printed at the bottom. The affected power banks were sold for about $27 online at Anker's website and on Amazon, Newegg and eBay from June 2016 to December 2022. Only the items sold in the US are being recalled. Customers should stop using the power banks immediately and contact Anker Innovations Limited to learn how to receive a free replacement. They must submit a photo of the power bank with the model number, serial number, the date of the photograph and 'recalled' written with a permanent marker on it. Customers are also required to confirm that they disposed of the power bank following laws and regulations. The lithium-ion batteries 'present a greater risk of fire', according to the CPSC, and owners should contact a local household hazardous waste collection center. They should not be thrown away in a regular trash or recycling bin. The power banks were manufactured in China. It comes just over a week after DR Power Equipment recalled more than 7,000 of its lithium-ion battery-powered chainsaws sold after receiving 20 reports of fire and burn incidents. Trump: I'm surprised Elon ever endorsed me

Donald Trump said he was 'amazed' that Elon Musk ever endorsed him because of his long-held commitment to demolishing the 'electric vehicle mandate'. The world's most powerful men entered a war of words trading insults from their respective social media platforms in an explosive row over Mr Trump's flagship spending bill. Mr Musk, who has since apologised for his insults, called for the president to be impeached and accused the president of being in the Epstein files. 'We're going to abolish the EV mandate, and Elon still endorsed me. Because, honestly, he never, ever spoke to me about that,' Mr Trump said as he signed a measure blocking California's first-in-the-nation rule banning the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035. 'And I used to say, 'I'm amazed that he's endorsing me, because that can't be good for him.' 'I once asked him about it. 'You never talked to me about that'. He said, 'Well, as long as it's happening to everybody, I'll be able to compete'. It's a very interesting answer.' 'Now we know why Elon doesn't like me so much,' Mr Trump joked. 'Which he does, actually, he does. And he never had a problem.' The bill signed by Mr Trump which Congress approved last month, aims to quash the country's most aggressive attempt to phase out gas-powered cars. It will also kill rules that phase out the sale of medium and heavy-duty diesel vehicles and cut tailpipe emissions from trucks. It is the latest in an ongoing battle between the Trump administration and Gavin Newsom, California's Governor, over everything from tariffs to the rights of LGBTQ+ youth and funding for electric vehicle chargers. The president and Mr Newsom have clashed over Mr Trump's move to deploy troops to Los Angeles in response to immigration protests. California, which has some of the nation's worst air pollution, has been able to seek waivers for decades from the Environmental Protection Agency, allowing it to adopt stricter emissions standards than the federal government. In his first term, Trump revoked California's ability to enforce its standards, but Joe Biden reinstated it in 2022. Mr Trump has not yet sought to revoke it again. 'He [Musk] said; 'as long as I'm on the same plan as everybody else, we're going to do good. We make a better product',' Mr Trump added. 'I said, 'That's very cool. That's very good'. That was my answer. After that, he got a little bit strange, but I don't know why.' Mr Musk apologised to Mr Trump after a phone call with JD Vance, the US vice-president, following their explosive fallout. The details of the truce between the two men emerged after Mr Musk said publicly on Wednesday that he 'regretted' writing inflammatory posts about the president on social media. In a podcast episode released the day after the feud erupted, Mr Vance said: 'I hope that eventually Elon comes back into the fold. Maybe that's not possible now because he's gone so nuclear – but I hope it is.'

Trump to attend AI and energy summit in Pittsburgh

WASHINGTON, June 12 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump and executives from the tech and energy sectors will appear at an artificial intelligence and energy summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on July 15, the office of the state's U.S. Senator Dave McCormick said on Thursday. McCormick's inaugural Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit will be held at Carnegie Mellon University, his office said in a statement. Axios reported that tech executives like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab CEO Satya Nadella and Alphabet CEO (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Sundar Pichai were on the summit's guest list. Exxon Mobil (XOM.N), opens new tab CEO Darren Woods, Shell (SHEL.L), opens new tab CEO Wael Sawan and Chevron (CVX.N), opens new tab CEO Mike Wirth were also on that list, according to Axios. White House AI czar David Sacks, who is also expected to attend the summit, expressed concern earlier this week that regulating U.S. AI too tightly could stifle growth and cede the critical market to China. The comments indicated the Republican president's approach to AI could be centered on expanding markets abroad for U.S. AI chips and models. Democratic former President Joe Biden had emphasized policies that countered risks the chips could be diverted to China and used to bolster Beijing's military. A group of 40 state attorneys general, including Republicans from Ohio, Tennessee, Arkansas, Utah and Virginia and other states, have pushed back against Republican attempts to block states from regulating AI, saying states should develop and enforce common-sense regulation to protect consumers.
